Luc, I have no idea. But neither - unless you have some special inside information - do you or Ross.
You are just speculating and accusing Jackson of exaggerating or lying.

Given that the key actors are British and American, and flying them down to NZ for filming isn't especially convenient, and given that the UK has a film industry, I could speculate that WB would be
happy to make films there.

If you have any proof, rather than speculation, feel free to provide it.

edit: quick check. WB made the Harry Potter films. In the UK.

So Mary Rose, you say WB would want to move from a lightly regulated environment to one whose employment laws are subject to stringent EU requirements? And where Actors Equity holds sway? Even when the release date is already set in stone?

ross69 (1,063) Says: November 26th, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Perhaps there is increasing animosity towards Jackson because he’s dishonest. The Hobbit was never going to be made overseas and he knew it.

Peter Jackson, Nov 27
"[Warner Bros] had sent a location scout around England and Scotland to take photos, and they literally had the script broken down to each scene, and in each scene there were pictures of the Scottish Highlands, and the forests in England... and that was to convince us we could easily just go over there and shoot the film," he told Radio New Zealand.

Do explain, Ross, how those two match up. Do you think he's making it up about Warner Brothers? Were they just bluffing? Or what?

Maybe his isn't moving on because people keep claiming they know better than him what was going to happen?

Oh, and by the way, thanks for changing your employment laws to what I have always wanted so that saves me the bother of actually negotiating with those nasty unions who demand stuff, you know, things, [hat tip to Bill O'Reilly] you know, pesky annoyances like workers not wanting to be fired at will so they can budget and pay their mortgages.

Sheer brilliance from PJ. While we go to the TPP negotiations going bwahaaa about worldwide subsidies constraining our processed grass sector, we are busy doing exactly the same in another sector.

I like to think that New Zealand is more then just the scenery. If you take New Zealand as our thousands of crew, our set builders, our caterers, our visual effects ninjas, their families and support network, our world leading technology and artistry, the fans and well wishers who are proud of what we do and the students I've talked to who are inspired that we have and that they can do this level of work in NZ.

Looking at it that way Middle Earth would be about 97% New Zealand (I'll give you that the score was recorded in London)

Dishonest? A big statement - but of course, a claim short on fact. And not for the first time, the bullshit emanates from the keyboard of ross69... who clearly didn't read the comments above from people who have worked with Sir Peter J within the industry. Somehow, their opinion of Sir Peter J are diametrically opposed to ross69's - quelle surprise.

But now that you have raised the topic of employee relations, how did your hero Matt McCarten get on with paying back the employee PAYE contributions he failed to pass on to the IRD? Any update on that ross69?

Nah - thought not.

Who are these Hobbit haters I keep hearing about? There is no reason to be hating the little fellows, as far as I can see? Okay, admittedly the reputation of Hobbits has been slightly tarnished through their being used in a propaganda campaign prostituting New Zealand to the rest of the world. But their good reputation goes back further than that. They were after all the creation of one J.R.R. Tolkien, an English fantasy author, poet, philologist, and uni professor. Hobbits, as far as I can tell, have no real links with New Zealand, no matter how desperately some Kiwis might like to appropriate this piece of classic English fantasy literature for themselves. As a proud Kiwi I refuse to accept that NZ is Middle-Earth!

Jackson is a douchebag.

It is a common complaint . . . . . . . . . . .

Nevertheless, still a douchebag.

Do you always talk about yourself that way Mr. Jackson

Yes, l'affaire Hobbit was pretty much a landmark in our labour-relations history, right up there with the '51 waterfront lockout and the boilermakers' antics in the 70s.
Was it about an insecure industry feeling threatened that their special status might be in danger and that their accustomed (but illegal) labour practices and generous taxpayer subsidies might be taken away?
Why does the film industry need protection denied to other industries?
