Finlayson gets Transtasman MP of the Year

December 3rd, 2012 at 7:49 am by David Farrar

Stuff reports:

Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson has been named politician of the year by , beating off challenges from Prime Minister John Key and Green co-leader Russel Norman.

The judges in the political newsletter’s annual “roll-call” said Mr Finlayson, who is also Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister, had “given away a national park to Maori, and no-one seems to mind much. That’s pretty good going”.

They gave him eight out of 10 for his performance this year – the same as Mr Key and Dr Norman – noting “his disdain for his political opponents is palpable – one of the sharpest debaters in Parliament”.

His increasing stature as a politician and member of the inner circle was evident when Mr Key gave him responsibility for the Labour portfolio when Kate Wilkinson stepped down after the Pike River royal commission.

The Herald also gave Finlayson top marks, so a bit of a consensus there.

Finlayson deserves it. That’ll get on the nerves of King and Mallard. But they deserves that, too.

No one seems to mind much…….just goes to show how beaten down the electorate has become by the Treaty machine.Finlayson is also the front man for secret give aways and no one seems to mind how devalued our democracy has become. International treaty negotiations are another example. “We” know best.Paternalism writ large.

[DPF: How are they secret give-aways. Each settlement has an Act of Parliament debated three times, with select committee submissions]

If there really was a “Trans-Tasman” MP of the year, I am guessing it wouldn’t come from the East side of the Tasman

CR is the right holding up a mirror to the likes of Penny Bright… i.e. a NUTTER!

An inconsequential writer of nasty little open letters that real people might read once, then throw in the bin with a chuckle.

Full of sound and fury, accomplishing five eighths of fuck all. And probably worrying himself to an early grave in the process…

He is very very good and does not court facile popularity. A great debater in the House which is why he is the target of rather feeble attacks by Mallard and his unlovely cronies.

Courtesy from Crusader Rabbit. A letter to Key & Finlayson:

    “Sir
I have just watched your interview of 2 December 2012 on Marae Investigates, and I am writing to express my utter disgust. Firstly, you claim the settlement process will never end. How can we ever move forward as a nation when you and your ilk are constantly looking in the rear-view mirror?

Secondly, your reference to those who desire One Law For All (which, as far as I can recall, was and remains a policy of your Party), and a colourblind state as “miscreants” and “KKK types” is utterly appalling. I am a man of character and thus do not habitually resort to name calling, but if I did I might refer to what you’re doing as establishing Apartheid Aotearoa; I might liken you to PW Botha.

Sir, you have “outed” yourself beyond all sense as the Corporate IWI’s man in the Ministry. You have done more to further the cause of your Masters in the Corporate IWI than any politician since Rata established the hopelessly biased Waitangi Tribunal in the ’70s. You cannot possibly now claim to negotiate on behalf of the Crown with such a one-eyed perspective.

If you had even the tiniest measure of character or integrity, you would hand in your warrant and no more bring disgrace on the office of Attorney-General. Furthermore, I charge you with cowardice. You have never, and I’ll suggest will never, have the courage to stand before electors and seek approval of your programme or your performance.

Make no mistake, Mr Finlayson, you have utterly mis-read the mood of the nation. The vast majority is utterly sick of the over-reach of the Corporate IWI, and the constant surrender by a succession of governments but yours more than any other.

Prime Minister, when in 2014 your government is defeated by midgets like Shearer and Mallard, backed by poisonous ideologues Turei and Norman, you should look no further than yourself and your Manchurian Arttorney.

    Sincerely”

How much did it cost Finlayson to be so generous. He certainly has a very sharp mind and a formidable debating style but i think he needs to cogitate on Davey Crockett’s famous ‘Not yours to give’ speech http://www.fee.org/library/detail/not-your-to-give-2#axzz2DvyMPojQ . For my money Paula Benefit has been the most impressive at Question time and appeals as being on top of her difficult portfolio and cuddly and charming at the same time.

I tend to find Chris Finlayson likeable, hardworking and diligent in his duties. He is a definite asset to his caucus and he should be promoted at the next Cabinet reshuffle. He strikes me as a logical choice for National party negotiator with the Maori Party, given they may well end up holding the balance of power in the event of an otherwise hung parliament in 2014.

Hold on, though. Finlayson has also voted against marriage equality and is anti-choice on abortion, so he’s not completely one of ‘my lot’, as you put it. To be honest, Finlayson, like Sir Doug Graham within the Bolger administration before recent unfortunate events, is an asset to the Blue Corner. I’m being politically neutral on this one.
