The vote on the female bishops within the church resulted in the church clergy being in favour but the church laity being opposed.

While some claim that the decline in participation of the Church of England only made it stronger, maybe it simply made it more reactionary/conservative/precious/more Catholic.

Thus the irony that the church can be headed by an atheist/agnostic/deist/Jew/Moslem etc and only a Catholic is excluded.

Clearly this is not a theological position, nor a fear of a royal tyrant (given parliament rules today) but simply based on English nationalism against European over-rule – thus the other results on UK independence from Europe.

Can’t say I’m surprised about the female bishops. Thank Gaia the local Anglicans are mostly sane and sensible over issues like female episcopal leadership and LGBT ordination.

SPC, using ordinary English language usage, the UK has had absolutely no cuts at all. Quite the opposite, what they have had is a relatively minor reduction in the rate of increase in spending. So when Osborne talks of “spending cuts” he means he won’t pour as much extra money into the various sinkholes.

And when the general populace gets to vote on who will be a bishop, then they have some rights to pontificate on whether women can be bishops. Frankly I don’t think that anyone but the church should have a say, and if they chose to stay male only, those who object should leave and form their own church, or change it by the rules. I bet most would support female Imams as well, and the odds on that are…

The UK is to increase benefits and tax credits and child benefit to working families by 1% less than the rate of inflation – this for the next 3 years.

In his statement, Mr Osborne confirmed it would take longer to clear the country’s debts than he previously thought – and this means the spending cuts will go on for longer than planned.

Queen Elizabeth freed prisoners to defend the English coast from the Spanish armada. If our prisoners aren’t defending our coast, I see no reason why they are/or should be entitled to a vote.

As a citizen it is your duty and responsibility to adhere to the rule of law. A prison sentence means you failed to do so and therefore waver your entitlements as a citizen.

Mark, Im not so sure. The prevailing mood in the UK at the moment, and for a while, is that there is more more avoidance AND evasion amongst high income earners and the wealthy than there is here, and given the appalling state of their economy, those people become natural targets.

And as for “78% say the Church of England should allow female Bishops, with 10% against only” given the church was formed so a rogue King could marry with impunity, they dont really have a moral leg to stand on But said king would be rolling in his grave that, in his opinion, chattels like women could be ordained

Those in favour of retaining higher taxes for the well paid is fairly overwhelming. I suspect the result would be the same here if a poll asked the same question regarding tax both top rate and the company tax rate.

@Dave S – it’s not “withdrawing” the franchise from prisoners. Prisoners do not have the vote in the UK, the European Court of Human Rights is trying to tell the UK that such a ban is illegal, and there is obviously strong support for the Government stance that it’s non of the ECHR’s business.

So the only things with majority support (in this poll) are
– Holding a referendum on membership in the EU,
and
– Withdrawing the franchise from prisoners,
and
– Consecrating female Bishops in the CofE

Interesting.

I wonder what the same questions (adjusted as required – e.g. integration with Australia rather than the EU,) would deliver here?
