The South Korean porn police
December 13th, 2012 at 4:00 pm by David FarrarStuff reports:
Moon Tae-Hwa stares at his computer, dizzy and nauseous from the hours of porn he’s viewed online while his wife and children slept. He feels no shame – only a righteous sense of mission.
“I feel like I’m cleaning up dirty things,” the devout Christian and family counsellor said.
Moon is among the most successful members of the “Nuri Cops” (roughly “net cops”), a squad of nearly 800 volunteers who help government censors by patrolling the Internet for pornography in their spare time.
Hmmn, so these 800 people volunteer to hunt for all the nasty dirty porn out there, to protect their fellow citizens from it. You know, that sounds like quite a fun job!
Unlike most developed nations, pornography is illegal in South Korea, though it remains easy for its tech-savvy population to find. More than 90 percent of South Korea’s homes have high-speed Internet access, and more than 30 million of its 50 million people own smartphones.
“It’s like shovelling snow in a blizzard,” Moon conceded.
But nevertheless, he’ll happily carry on spending eight hours a day, seven days a week searching for all that pornography so he can complain to someone about it. True valiant servants.

Rule 34 suggests that this wouldn’t be a very fun job at all after a while. Not all porn is good porn.

But hey, This is South Korea the country where I.E has a defacto monopoly due to a decade long requirement to use Active-X for e-commerce, ( its also used on government sites for secure services)-
Hmm a devout believer spending all his time looking at stuff his religion would likely frown upon…… I think there is a word for that

Once this volunteer has identified the ‘problem’ does he then have the solution in hand?

Doesn’t sound like any fun to me.
Vote:I remember a local TV programme in which our Chief Censor was interviewed and talked about the job he and his people do.
They have to have regular counselling for the stuff they watch, and it’s probably not as much as this Korean guy.

If it’s Japanese porn he is mostly intercepting it will be even more out there and sick than the standard Western-Jewish porn.

Elaycee,
Vote:if a korean is involved – I imagine they try to get their real names and get them arrested.
otherwise I suppose they get the local IPs to block the main porn sites.

oh solution in hand heh… yeah.. that first.

“Your search for ‘Korean porn’ produced about 1,280,000 results (0.23 seconds)”. (Just in the interests of keeping fellow Kiwibloggers fully informed, you understand).
There’s clearly more than 800 of them involved in making it… the poor bloke would be better off peeping in the neighbours’ windows looking for a webcam… which is the logical next step for anyone who feels as he does anyway.

I just tested Mr Moon’s handiwork (I wonder if it is just a phase he is going through). Browsing to some obvious sites redirects here: http://warning.or.kr/
Roughly translated: “Illegal and harmful site blocking information”, then lists all the relevant agencies you can call to complain and get the site unblocked. Judging from the list it looks like they block a whole catalog of stuff like online pharmacies (drug sales), gambling, gaming, bookies… not just porn.
Nevertheless, I’d rather have this 100Mb/s connection for $20/month than the 100% pure unfiltered TelecomNZ offering.

Great to see Christians valiantly defending the poor and weak like Christ commanded.
