mikenmild – no it’s not. On my regular trip from Otaki to the airport, it is the road into Wellington (ie North of Porirua) that takes the most time, even when it’s not busy (eg at 4am). The Basin and bypass is only a small part of that journey, however it would be nice if it was a motorway tunnel as far as the expressway at Kilburnie.

A decent motorway connection between central Wellington and the airport is needed much more than Transmission Gully. The NZTA proposal to get around the Basin is a step on that way, but what is really needed is the second Mount Vic tunnel and completion of the links from there to the airport.
The Basin Reserve gets a new stand out of the deal – it all looks good for cricket lovers. It seems unlikely that the trust that runs the basin could ever raise the cash to strengthen or replace the Museum stand, so this is the best deal that they’re likely to get.

The word cricket gives me mild indigestion but anyway….

Where would you choose to play cricket… the MCG or fucking Eden Park… or anywhere else in NZ? It’s a stinking rugby ground ffs. Might be ok for the local under 12s but not international cricketers. What a freakin joke man.

I’m from Wellington. If you build something that’s shaped like a fucking cake tin… people are going to call it a fucking cake tin. Duh!!!!!!! Recipe for disaster that one.

The Basin is a nice cricket ground… but it’s backwater stuff eh? Fucking hell….

But at least it is a true cricket ground. Not a fucking rugby park makeshift cricket ground.

In Wellington the powers that be hate cars and all they care about is adding another 20 sets of lights and 300 extra speed humps and 50 new roundabouts around the place every year and seeing what kind of colourful bullshit reasons they can come up with to justify it all. Shit they must have a good fucking laugh at our expense.

Parts of Wellington you want to avoid at all costs traffic wise… Newtown would be one place. Anywhere in the CBD but especially around Willis St/ Lambton Quay/ Courtenay Place/ Terrace/ Tory St/ Victoria St. Traffic lights are a joke… they don’t know how to set the phases…. fucking morons. Combined with gimps with the reaction time of a drunk IHC pensioner… lethal.

Basin is Used for rugby in winter and is an official footpath so always has people walking through it during non cricket days.

A Deed of Conveyance of the Basin Reserve between the Crown and the Governor-General of New Zealand to the Wellington City Council was approved in 1884 that established that the ground was to be “forever used for the purposes of a cricket and a recreation ground by the inhabitants of Wellington.”

Crikey, forever is a long time. Can non-cricketers access the Basin Reserve for recreation?

Annette King will will become Mayor and will bulldoze the tunnel scheme – after all she lives that side of the tunnel (as does Celia.
One point though – Annette will have shit fight on her hands as Greenpeace Party Celia is considered as doing a better than expected job.
Others think she is only a holding Mayor until somebody else comes on.
Helen Kelly will hope like hell that Annette gets the job so she can get Rongotai before the 2014 election

If the eight Wellington city councillors who last month voted to spend $50,000 investigating alternatives to NZTA’s planned flyover have a better option that meets those criteria, now is the time to share it with ratepayers. It would be astounding if they find one.

Bowl the basin reserve, and build a proper 4-sided cloverleaf intersection right in the middle of it.

Let’s face it we’re shit at cricket, we don’t need or deserve a dedicated venue for playing cricket right in the middle of the city’s main traffic bottleneck. Anyway the stands are earthquake risk and there’s no money to strengthen them. And the whole area around the basin is a hot, noisy, dirty hell hole anyway, replacing the basin reserve with a more functional roadway isn’t going to make it any worse than it already is.

Yes but being Wellingtonian’s we will just re-elect the same failed people. My ward will just put Andy Foster back in as he is well known. I just wish we could find a few more Swampy Marshes in the city.

Celia will get in as there is just no alternative and Annette King would be worse IMHO as she would just work against any National Government initiative
