And Turiana makes it clear what she thinks of Hone the dictator:

“Somebody who purports to represent our people, and to say that he’s got to be the leader, no, no, that’s not how it works in our party.”

She says the parties have tried to work together previously but it has not worked.

Mrs Turia added that when she read news reports of Mr Harawira’s leadership aspirations, she “thought Hone had started a comedy show”.

alex – yes, it’s looking like that as more detail comes out.

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira issued a statement this morning saying he would be open to the idea of working with the (Maori) party to reinvigorate its leadership, which he said was “old and tired”.

I quite like aspects of Maori Party democracy and engagement with their constiuency, nit unlike Greens in a way, but despite that they seem to be fading away.
“Maoridom deserves the strong and vibrant leadership that Mana can provide.”

He said he would work with the party on the condition it cut ties with the National Party.

He knows that isn’t acceptable, even if they would contemplate taking him on to ‘reinvigorate it’s leadership’, do it looks like he is kicking off the year with some media coverage and stirring a bit at the same time.

I don’t know how he will get on picking up any significant support though, Maori focussed parties haven’t even been that popular amongst Maori voters if you compare party vote with % Maori population.

@PG – I think Hone may just be shit stirring. After all, if he can hold Mana together then he just has to wait for the Maori Party to implode and then he can welcome the activist base back with open arms. He gets to be effectively in charge of both parties, he doesn’t have to put up with his old colleagues either. Win Win, and with a destroyed Maori Party he can more effectively bring through Mana candidates in the Maori seats.

That seem’s a bit cheeky, buggering off and forming his own party, then when he sees an oportunity tries to promote himself back to the top of the old lot.

They only have three MPs in total and two of them are leaders. Why not just have one leader, so that leaders wouldn’t be in the majority?

Sharples thinks hes the komatua of all komatua’s and he thinks he should have the limo for the rest of his life – and also hes a bit thick – Turia told him to go and I am pretty sure that she is behind this challenge.

When will Maori learn to make so real progress – this guy is just too stupid to see reality.
