The problem with housing affordability is that first home buyers DO NOT want to buy when prices are more affordable and stablising. As soon as prices start to go up, they jump in the queue which makes the problem worse. Have been around long enough to see it time and again.
Labour may be getting traction with their policy but the reality is that people are not going to want to buy an ‘affordable’ 90 sqm box on the outer edges of Aucland.
Some of us started out in little B & T units, not for this generation. First house has to be 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with 4 car garaging.

- despite quoting a BERL report that says freigh volume needs to more than quadruple for the line to be profitable
And Labour would also have to be able to get sufficient votes in Parliament. Presumably Greens would back a substantially taxpayer subsidised rail line, but they would probably need more votes than Labour+Green.

There is no such thing as a fast lane in NZ. Right hand lanes are not for ‘fast’ traffic, and on a multi laned motorway there is no distinction in the speed of lanes.
@Pete George. Well that is one way to throw money down the crapper. What that region needs is a massive investment in roading infrastructure. Its got to be the worst road in New Zealand but such potential for tourism and exporting if the Wellington Gisborne New Plymouth triangle was given a boost with decent freeways.

Tauhei Notts is right: when there’s more than a single lane on any road – including a motorway or a freeway – it should be an enforceable requirement that drivers keep to the left as far as is practicable. That might minimise the build-up of driver frustration that can be a precursor to unnecessary crashes.

Hello T.Notts! You obviously haven’t held a driving licence for very long – either that or you were badly taught when you were a Learner.
As every competent driver knows, the outside lane is the overtaking lane. Did you get that? O-V-E-R-T-A-K-I-N-G!! Use it to overtake and then return to a non-overtaking lane.
That way we will all get to where we are going comparatively safely and without delay – or the frustration of being held up behind a slow mover hogging the overtaking lane.
I accept that policy pledges or promises are not, can not, be set in stone, they are subject to changing situations, election results, coalition agreements and policy support negotiations.
I still query the optimism in quadrupling freight volumes.
In particular I think there’s an important issue that needs more attention regarding Labour’s stated preference on Hillside Workshops and the Gisborne-Napier line to change the business model of SOEs to include wider costs including social costs and costs of unemployment and the effects on downstream business.
And whether MPs should have more ongoing say in the operating decisions of SOEs.

The idea of suspending the Constitution was first presented in the mid 1980s during the Reagan administration.
No less a thug than the drug-dealing, murder-ordering, terrorist-supporting Oliver North was knee deep in the program.
Since then every US president – George Bush Sr, Bill Clinton, George Bush Jr, and Barack Obama – have steadily created oppressive laws and legal systems to “fight terrorism” while simultaneously violating basic Constitutional rights.
Simultaneously with this, the US military has received training on how to suppress the rights of and even attack US citizens on US soil. US police have been increasingly militarized and new armed federal agencies have spouted like weeds.
Why?
Doesn’t the US have enough serious problems to attend to without the need to laboriously create new “programs” to fight non-existent or government manufactured problems?

CHINA has mounted a huge investment drive to explore its vast untapped reserves of shale gas in what it hopes could become a repeat of the energy revolution taking place in North America.
Sixteen Chinese companies, including 14 state-owned enterprises, pledged to invest ¥12.8billion when they won contracts from the Ministry of Land and Resources to search for shale gas in remote parts of the country over three years, according to Xinhua, the state news agency.

“Despite struggling under a Greek-exposed debt mountain, the east Mediterranean island sits on potentially huge energy wealth in excess of 600 billion euros, a Royal Bank of Scotland report said.
Cyprus hydrocarbons company chief Charles Ellinas says the island will be exporting to Europe by 2019 with a view to meeting 10 percent of the bloc’s energy needs.
Offshore exploration by Houston-based Noble Energy in Block 12 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone indicates a gross natural gas reserve of up to 254.9 billion cubic metres (9 trillion cubic feet).”
There has been 2 very close elections in recent days. A few days ago the German State of Lower Saxony produced (at leat provissionally) a narrow win the SPD/ Greens by 1 seat over the CDU/FDP. Hard to see such a slim majority lasting over the term but time will tell.
Despite PM Binyamin Netanyahu claiming victory early (seemingly based on Exit Polls) it seem unlikely he’ll have a stable government over the next few year. Today in Israel his Likud coalition is down 11 seats (from 2009) to gain 31 seats (out of 120) the religious parties managed 29 so it appears that he’ll need some support from the centre for any long-term government to last.
To make matters worse the Yisrael Beiteinu faction of his Likud coalition say they plan to be a separate party in the Knesset. I think Israel will be voting again in 6-15 months as I can’t see how anyone to get any sort of coherent government from the result (so far).
Interestingly, despite being about 20% of the population Arab parties only gained 12 seats (or 10% of the seats). Even taking into account the higher proportion of Israeli Arab too young to vote if their turnout was the same you would expect 17-18 seats. Maybe a mix of apathy and boycott keep the numbers down (I realise that some vote for non arab parties too).

Anyone know why today’s NZ1, the Air NZ flight from London-LA-Auckland, made a sharp turn back to London after it had passed northwest Scotland, then made another sharp turn and resumed the flight?
The aircraft, a Boeing 777, doesn’t seem to have been delayed much. At midday (NZDT, 23.01.2012) it was heading across the Canadian province of Manitoba towards the US border at 562mph.
flightradar24.com is a wonderful, pointless time-waster….

The idea of suspending the Constitution was first presented in the mid 1980s during the Reagan administration.
No less a thug than the drug-dealing, murder-ordering, terrorist-supporting Oliver North was knee deep in the program.
Since then every US president – George Bush Sr, Bill Clinton, George Bush Jr, and Barack Obama – have steadily created oppressive laws and legal systems to “fight terrorism” while simultaneously violating basic Constitutional rights.
Simultaneously with this, the US military has received training on how to suppress the rights of and even attack US citizens on US soil. US police have been increasingly militarized and new armed federal agencies have spouted like weeds.
Why?
Doesn’t the US have enough serious problems to attend to without the need to laboriously create new “programs” to fight non-existent or government manufactured problems?
Instead the ONLY thing the US government has done consistently over the last 30 years (besides wage illegal wars and give Wall Street criminals a “get out of jail free” card) is create new secret “internal security” laws, bureaucracies, infrastructure and armed bodies.

The Middle Schoolers where we moved–those girls were like in a state of scream. My daughter started getting that way. I took her off the school lunch and she calmed down immediately. Then I find out my son’s 5th grade Nazi teacher is trying to get them to report the parents aren’t feeding them right. And I am reading labels like crazy. What it is about is CONTROL. They will be dosing your kids behind your back. But what they are putting into their heads is far more toxic than in their bodies.

Cyprus hydrocarbons company chief Charles Ellinas says the island will be exporting to Europe by 2019 with a view to meeting 10 percent of the bloc’s energy needs.
Offshore exploration by Houston-based Noble Energy in Block 12 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone indicates a gross natural gas reserve of up to 254.9 billion cubic metres (9 trillion cubic feet).”

There has been 2 very close elections in recent days. A few days ago the German State of Lower Saxony produced (at leat provissionally) a narrow win the SPD/ Greens by 1 seat over the CDU/FDP. Hard to see such a slim majority lasting over the term but time will tell.
Despite PM Binyamin Netanyahu claiming victory early (seemingly based on Exit Polls) it seem unlikely he’ll have a stable government over the next few year. Today in Israel his Likud coalition is down 11 seats (from 2009) to gain 31 seats (out of 120) the religious parties managed 29 so it appears that he’ll need some support from the centre for any long-term government to last.
To make matters worse the Yisrael Beiteinu faction of his Likud coalition say they plan to be a separate party in the Knesset. I think Israel will be voting again in 6-15 months as I can’t see how anyone to get any sort of coherent government from the result (so far).
Interestingly, despite being about 20% of the population Arab parties only gained 12 seats (or 10% of the seats). Even taking into account the higher proportion of Israeli Arab too young to vote if their turnout was the same you would expect 17-18 seats. Maybe a mix of apathy and boycott keep the numbers down (I realise that some vote for non arab parties too).
