The National Academy of Science
Science has made enormous inroads in understanding climate change and its causes, and is beginning to help develop a strong understanding of current and potential impacts that will affect people today and in coming decades. This understanding is crucial because it allows decision makers to place climate change in the context of other large challenges facing the nation and the world. There are still some uncertainties, and there always will be in understanding a complex system like Earth’s climate. Nevertheless, there is a strong, credible body of evidence, based on multiple lines of research, documenting that climate is changing and that these changes are in large part caused by human activities. While much remains to be learned, the core phenomenon, scientific questions, and hypotheses have been examined thoroughly and have stood firm in the face of serious scientific debate and careful evaluation of alternative explanations.

Record heat

The fires and warnings follow days of searing heat. In a statement, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology revealed that for each of the first six days of 2013, the "national area-average" temperature had been in the top 20 hottest days on record.
It was also the first time that average national top temperatures over 39C had been recorded on five consecutive days, the bureau said Prime Minister Julia Gillard said residents had to stay alert."The word catastrophic is being used for good reason," she said. "So it is very important that people keep themselves safe, that they listen to local authorities and local warnings.
"This is a very dangerous day."

The founder and president of hardline conservationists Sea Shepherd, Paul Watson, is stepping down from the leadership after a ruling from a United States court over a Japanese restraining order.

Former Australian Greens leader Bob Brown is to take over running Sea Shepherd's imminent Antarctic anti-whaling campaign.

Watson, 62, who is wanted by Japan under an Interpol "red notice", remains at sea aboard the group's flagship, Steve Irwin.

The Steve Irwin docked at Timaru on Saturday to take on fuel, but Watson switched to another vessel before his ship arrived in port.

Direction of the group's campaign to halt the Japanese whaling fleet will shift to Brown and Sea Shepherd's Australian manager, Jeff Hansen.

Brown, who resigned from the Greens leadership last year, said he would be taking advice from Watson, but rejected any suggestion that the switch was a token move.

Narsekissa makes a lot of jokes about Christians. Here's a few about Narsekissa:

Early in his career, Narsekissa worked in a warehouse to help make ends meet. The warehouse was owned by a chinese man.
An unemployed guy walks onto a building site in the hope of getting work.

The foreman says,"it must be your lucky day today. Old Billy the crane operator is retiring on Friday, you can have his job. Just climb the 300 foot ladder, bang on the side widow and tell Billy I've sent you up to be trained."

The unemployed guy climbs the 300 foot ladder, bangs on the side window and explains to old Billy what the foreman had told him.

Old Billy gestures to the unemployed guy to squeeze into his cab next to him and then shows him that after he gets the crane started, he has 3 levers in front of him. "Pull this one on the left," says old Billy, "and it moves the crane to the left, push it back and it centralizes it." Likewise," says old Billy, "with the lever on the right hand side."

"The lever in the middle, operates your boom and jib, depending on where you need to put your load down," says old Billy.

"O.K got that," says the unemployed guy, "but what happens when you need to take a piss?"

Old Billy says, "I'm just about ready to show you that as I do need a piss. All you do is carefully walk out on the arm of the crane and piss over the side, by the time it hits the ground it's evaporated. Just sit there and don't touch anything,"says old Billy.

So old Billy eases out onto the arm of the crane when the unemployed guy accidentally moves one of the levers and old Billy falls off the crane.

At the coroners inquest the coroner asks,"can anybody shed any light on the unfortunate death of old Billy?"

One of the chippies stands up and says, "I think old Billy was a sex maniac. I was framing up on the second storey when I looked over the side and saw 3 gorgeous blondes walking through the site, and as I looked up I saw old Billy coming down, cock in his hand yelling FUCK!"

bc @ 1:31 - I've read patiently through your four partisan pro-Labour contributions today, but the following from you is just too much to ignore:

"Chris Hipkins is quite right right to point all this out. It is exactly what the opposition should be doing.
Interesting that the posters here choose to ignore the issue but instead attack the messenger."

That is just plain wrong. Nobody here has put up any spirited defence of Parata / Foss's performance over the hopeless Novopay debarcle. Indeed, your own comments on the subject have received a measure of support. But a number of posters on this thread have also questioned Chris Hipkins' little side quip about Key's absence on holiday. To do that is not to "attack the messenger", as you have claimed a couple of times. Instead, it is a rebuff to Hipkins' snide personal comment about the PM, in which Hipkins no doubt alludes (with customary levels of socialist envy) to the PM's holiday pad in Hawaii. I expect that Hipkins' purpose is to invite the public to view the PM as an irresponsible "rich prick" for holidaying with his family in his and their own property.

In other words, it's a bit of guttter politics on the side by Hipkins, to which readers have reacted. That's not attacking the messenger. You too should be prepared to question Hipkins on that insidious kind of comment.
