Kate Chapman at Stuff reports:

Mr Harawira said he had been approached by Maori Party members around the country who were keen for him to take over.

“Clearly they’re in dire straits right now, their membership has just dropped through the floor.”

Mr Harawira quit the Maori Party ahead of the 2011 election following perpetual infighting.

There would be ground rules to the proposed merger – Mr Harawira wants be the leader and the Maori Party would have to end its relationship with National.

At the time Hone left the Maori Party, I said it was more about the fact he wanted to be the Leader, than anything else. I think this confirms it.

An interesting view on the Maori Party (and Mana).

The Maori Party generally more or less appears to be a “dead” or “dying” party now.

The downfall of the Maori Party clearly started by going into a support agreement with a National led government, and to somehow at least passively “agree” to a range of controversial policies, naturally also to amend the law affecting foreshore and seabed matters.

Mana is supposed to be a new, inclusive “Left Party”, but most know, it is primarily led and organised by and through Harawira and his closest supporters. Yet he always wishes to emphasize, that Mana stands for the rights of Mana PLUS others, e.g. Pakeha, negatively affected by bad right wing policies.

Maori Party support has dropped and they will struggle to get voted back into Parliament, since Tariana has announced her retreat. Sharples is just too much of an old power loving hanger-on now, as one must seriously question his ability to influence the decisions of the government he supports, and is member of as a Minister. Flavell made a challenge, but Maori Party leaders are too scared now to see it through.

Hence again, my conclusion is that not just is Labour in a situation where it is struggling to find a “new way” as a “left” or at least “left of centre” party, Mana is also about to fall to pieces, given Harawira’s newly revived true aspirations.

Maori Party will soon be “dead”, I would expect, at least no more than a party in a similar situation as ACT is in now.

Yes, and the closer we get to reality, the closer we get to John Key looking at the only real possibility.
NZ First.
That is unless NZ Nat are prepared to lift Conservative party into parliament.

Sharples & Turia took race-based politics in a very positive direction (IMHO) by choosing to work constructively with the “Pakeha” National Party instead of perpetuating the victim/enemy mentality.

Harawira on the other hand is a proponent of racial hatred and that is about all he is. It is hard to see how his ideas can do any good for anyone, bros or white motherfuckers alike.

The vote for NZ first was nothing more than a protest vote at national.It is clutching at straws to think those that voted for the pin striped drunkard would vote the left into power. The only reason they risked voting whinny was they were positive the Nats were in and the protest vote was not going to allow the fruit loops into power

this above comment is silly, I am an activist entirely to get NZ First to refuse any association with Labour Green, and we have a good chance of doing this. we will not vote for Winston NZ First, if we think he will join Labour.
There is little time. Grey power have gone a little left. We can not afford a crazy Labour Green Government.
It will not be easy.
I personally do not think the 7% votes NZ First will transfer to a Labour Government
