Heard that and smiled realizing that PEB would be in cricket heaven.

Can’t say I agree about the penalty, Tom, at least not that categorically – it could have gone either way. (I was present at the Nelspruit stadium for that match – a brilliant occasion.)

But I do agree that Nelsen (the spelling is incorrect in DPF’s post) was outstanding in those 2010 World Cup Finals knockout stages, both as a defender and as the NZ captain. And he attracted a great deal of well-deserved praise from the world’s footballing media.

He leaves with his international reputation still on a high from the World Cup, in which he was one of the best defenders and the player primarily responsible for us punching well above our weight in that tournament. Who would ever have thought that NZ would be the position of being unfairly robbed of a win over the Italians (Nelsen was right at the time: it was never a penalty). .

Not unexpected, given his new position. Good luck to him, he has been a fantastic servant of NZ Football these past years, although dogged by injury.

I must say, however, that it was fun watching QPR and the Hammers the other night, with both Nelsen and Winston Reid on the field.
