Of course a pleasant half hour or so (by bus) wander across the Crowne Range from Wanaka brings you (via several Gibbston Valley vineyards if required) to Queenstown with it’s 8,762 car rental outlets and it’s international airport.

Trains over buses every time. Why would you want to be treated like cattle in a bus.

Trains have no traffic or lights to battle with. Plus dining cars.

If trains do cost more far worth it. I would like to know why though

Maybe not- seeing as Kiwiblog is rapidly becoming one of the gayest places on the net, such a trick might just get you picked up quite quickly by one of your queer liberal/ progressive regulars.

In fact holding that picture in their mind, they would probably even kick dust off a wet gravel road to get there before anyone else.

The Wanaka to Christchurch bus trip (actually shuttle to Tarras then Christchurch bus) is a world class scenic tour in its own right. Flying to Christchurch unless you are in a hurry is criminal. The ’27 hour’ service would be via Haast Pass and Arthurs Pass and is in effect another scenic tour.

Not surprised passenger numbers are non existent on it…you can fly cheaper to Aussie.

Even if you have to crawl to Christchurch , do not catch that bus. It takes about 27 hours and stops at every farm gate and when you’d like it to stop it doesn’t.
