Chauvel resigns from Parliament

Labour MP Charles Chauvel has today announced his resignation from Parliament.
“I have written to the Speaker, resigning my seat effective Monday 11 March.”
Charles Chauvel said that he had accepted a position with the United Nations in New York, advising on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.
Good God, is there any limit to how many jobs Helen can arrange for Labour MPs?
While Chauvel was not in favour with Shearer, it is still not a promising sign for Labour that an MP who is in the shadow Cabinet bails out of Parliament for a job. It indicates a lack of confidence he will become a Minister after the election.
Chauvel entered Parliament in 2006 and was always thought likely to become a Minister. He would have been appointed one if Labour had won in 2008.
This means that Carol Beaumont will be eligible to return to Parliament as a List MP. That is great for the union faction, but not so good for renewal.
Regardless of politics, I wish Charles well in his new job.

Chauvel’s integrity was compromised even before he entered Parliament with the revelation that he was thoroughly rorting the various board appointments he enjoyed under the then Labour Government. He spent up large on the taxpayer with quite significants fees and overseas travel.
He was not that dissimilar from Chris Carter in his sense of entitlement to use the taxpayer’s money for overseas travel.
And he will suckle on an even more lavish teat – the United Nations.
So now we have Clarke, Carter and Chauvell in the UN. Obviously if Darren Hughes had had a surname beginning with the letter C he would have got a UN job too, instead of a civil service job in England.

Had many a run in with Chauval over Labour Party policies in the 80′s but wish him well.

He is a very capable chap and would have done a good job, leaving aside the daftness of the policies he would be carrying out

the very reason i find it impossible to ever trust a Labour polly is they view it as a career, to milk at every opportunity. Showing real concern at career prospects, but no concern for constituents (he is a list MP but his constituency is Labour voters). and to leave halfway through his term. Pfft.

I am quite pleased to see Chauvel has resigned, the reason being that he was in favour of David Bain receiving compensation,or so he said.

Just heard a cut on a RadioLive story at 1pm that Shearer had told Chauvel he wouldn’t be getting a senior role in a future Labour govt, and that Chauvel was “grateful for that indication”. Plus one to Mr Shearer

United Nations! Oh my gawd!! What a dead beat bunch of self-serving troughers they are, to be sure!
I was with the United Nations in Cyprus for a spell – ostensibly keeping the peace between the warring Greek and Turkish Cypriot factions in that troubled Mediterranean Island.
Where shall I start? With the – (they shall remain unidentified) – European United Nations military contingent who were caught out selling weapons to the Turkish Cypriots and smuggling them to the buyer in their big white “UN” plastered armoured personnel carriers? Somewhere i still have a copy of the Cypriot newspapers showing the weapons all laid out on the ground in front of the UN vehicle with tearful blue beret-ed UN soldiers standing about looking sorry for themselves.
Or with the civilian foreign Judge who was, on behalf of the UN, addressing the legalities of the conflict and for whom we provided a personal driver. His Honour the Judge – (heavy sarcasm there!) -spent much of his time in Cyprus buying up ancient artefacts – amphora and the like – and shipping them to his home country under UN auspices – strictly contrary to Cyprus Government ancient artefact anti-exportation protection provisions.
I could go on, but sufficient be it for me to retain the firm view that many UN staff are in many instances self-serving gravy-trainers.

Vote:1. Shearer will not make him a Minister in his Cabinet so he throws his toys out of the cot.
2. The UN pay packet is far in excess of his current MP’s salary.

As others have said, Chauvel will not be missed. He has contributed nothing in his six or so years in the house.
Mind you, what this also says is that Chucky thinks that he will not be a Minister in the next five or so years. Make no mistake, this is a highly placed Labour MP who knows that his own party is fucked.

Despite being a list MP, Chauvel is a talented committed individual who had a lot to offer to New Zealand and his loss through resignation mid term is a blow to Labour’s re election chances. The divisions within Labours caucus could not be more apparent and further damages Shearers ability to form a credible coalition government at the next election.

The most striking thing about this story, for me anyway, has not raised any significant discussion.
In his own words, Chauvel has “accepted a position with the United Nations in New York, advising on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.”
That raises two things in my mind:
1. Who, or what UN Department / function, has Mr Chauvel been hired to advise? (Our MSM seem incapable of asking obvious questions. It may be that he’s joining Helen Clark’s UNDP, which itself would be newsworthy in this country.)
2. As someone about to be employed to advise on “Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance”, perhaps Mr Chauvel might care to remind us which way he voted on that egregious, undemocratic smear on New Zealand’s democracy – The Electoral Finance Act 2007.

Shovel wasn’t the most talented politician to grace the House, but by current Labour standards he was one of their better MPs. The fact he is jumping ship now when polls show a Labour Green government next time around speaks volumes to the current dysfunctionality of the Labour Party.
