Shovel wasn’t the most talented politician to grace the House, but by current Labour standards he was one of their better MPs. The fact he is jumping ship now when polls show a Labour Green government next time around speaks volumes to the current dysfunctionality of the Labour Party.

The most striking thing about this story, for me anyway, has not raised any significant discussion.

In his own words, Chauvel has “accepted a position with the United Nations in New York, advising on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.”

That raises two things in my mind:

1. Who, or what UN Department / function, has Mr Chauvel been hired to advise? (Our MSM seem incapable of asking obvious questions. It may be that he’s joining Helen Clark’s UNDP, which itself would be newsworthy in this country.)

2. As someone about to be employed to advise on “Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance”, perhaps Mr Chauvel might care to remind us which way he voted on that egregious, undemocratic smear on New Zealand’s democracy – The Electoral Finance Act 2007.

Despite being a list MP, Chauvel is a talented committed individual who had a lot to offer to New Zealand and his loss through resignation mid term is a blow to Labour’s re election chances. The divisions within Labours caucus could not be more apparent and further damages Shearers ability to form a credible coalition government at the next election.
For the remaining Labour caucus, the question you need to ask is how badly do you want to govern?

As others have said, Chauvel will not be missed. He has contributed nothing in his six or so years in the house.

Mind you, what this also says is that Chucky thinks that he will not be a Minister in the next five or so years. Make no mistake, this is a highly placed Labour MP who knows that his own party is fucked.

Mr Chauvel would not be jumping ship except for two things;
1. Shearer will not make him a Minister in his Cabinet so he throws his toys out of the cot.
2. The UN pay packet is far in excess of his current MP’s salary.
Once a trougher always a trougher (for liarbour MP’s anyway)
