The politics of envy is alive and well within the Mana Party.
John Minto posted last week an article entitled “The feral rich – how can we help them?”, taking aim well and truly at the richest people (and in a previous article he makes it very clear that this includes John Key). He has basically taken an article from “New Internationalist” magazine, whatever the hell that is, which identifies these “undeserving rich” as a menace to the community and suggests 10 ways we could help them. Among the highlights are:
- Gang culture – break up their vicious criminal gangs (our Business Roundtable?…) by arresting their ringleaders and locking them up.
- Parenting – provide parenting classes to teach social values and respect for others that they can pass on to their children (a good idea in general, but is he seriously suggesting that only the rich are in need of this???)
- Housing – move them out of their overvalued ghettos in the centres of the world’s capitals. Turn over the properties that they own, but barely occupy, to public use and social housing.
- Crime and rehab – crack down on repeated climate crime offenders by confiscating their luxury cars and private jets. Rehabilitate persistent offenders by teaching them how to walk and use public transport.
- Employment – wean the workshy off the benefits of unearned profits. Break trust fund dependence. Get underserving recipients on to work experience schemes.
- Profligacy – target contraception towards problem families with morbidly obese carbon footprints fuelled by irresponsible lifestyles.

This is useful advice also for us to help the 150 richest New Zealanders (which includes Prime Minister John Key) who had an increase in wealth of $7 billion in 2010.

Do we seriously have the vice president of a political party of New Zealand attempting to incite an illegal uprising, having gangs of thugs going around arresting anybody who happens to be “richer” than they consider appropriate for the crime of being a business leader, confiscating their property, and randomly evicting them from their houses so that squatters can move in?

John Armstrong raised serious concerns about Greens housing ‘dog of a policy’. He’s given me more detail on his thoughts on this.
Another factor was that the Greens’ scheme is a shared equity scheme. I was unable to find another such scheme anywhere which is skewed so heavily in favour of the buyer. That may be neccessary if you are targeting home ownership at the very bottom of the income scale.
But it carries big risks for the taxpayer.
Yes, a risk that investors will desert the rental property market because Green policy there is skewed so heavily in favour of the tenant, and the ext tenants will ‘buy’ no deposit no capital repayment houses – homes for life. On the government. On us. For life.

This is refreshing; a bloke injured whilst fleeing the police says that he, not the police are to blame. If only that acceptance of personal responsibility was more widespread.

Rest assured I don’t make a habit of reading John Minto’s bile on a regular basis (having suggested avoiding The Standard for much the same reason to others previously). I was actually hunting around to see if Hone Harawira had somewhere written some sort of spin explaining why his mother was bullying everyone on the marae – it’ll be fascinating to see if he does try to justify her behaviour.
Anyway, clicked through to Mana, see the headline, thought “WTF?” and proceeded to read.

Andrei, “offence” is an emotion and is purely subjective. It does not describe another persons actions or anthing external to the “offended” party. Offence is claimed most commonly to manipulate others and prevent views being expressed freely.
If you go down that path, then many could claim to be “offended” by religion, and for good reason too !
@ dime I dont have a considered view on the stock (at 6.8x trailing EBITDA it looks cheap but you’d need to take a view on the future), I agree the “grounded for years” is just horseshit. The global duopoly with EADS is a good market structure but having your competitor as a state owned and subsidised company not so much.

Andrei, all the tribunal should be disbanded. It is an absurd idea to form a tribunal to decide what we find offensive. It is up to the individual to decide. Usually compliants come from vocal minorities that are not representative of society generally.

A criminal lawyer has been charged with smuggling illicit goods into Mt Eden prison. She says her 80 visits over 9 months was to help prepare an appeal against her client’s conviction.
Now, over nine months there are about 180 working days. On 80 of those days she visited her client. In Auckland’s congested traffic each such visit would entail at least 60 minutes travel. That’s 80 hours on travel, before any talking is done. Incredible!

20 yrs ago we knew what racism & sexism was in the vocabulary sense – anything said that was pointless and unconstructive. Most people had the manners to listen to what was said, and then reject it if it had no value. End of matter.

In a major victory for taxpayers in Iceland, an obscure transnational court ruled against the European Union and a similar supranational body last week, deciding that the tiny population of the island nation was not responsible for the massive liabilities of a private Icelandic bank that went bust during the 2008 economic meltdown. Establishment analysts blasted the decision as a “blow to global banking,” but Icelanders and proponents of the free market celebrated the verdict as a big win for the people and market principles — after all, they argue, citizens should not be forced to pay for the reckless and potentially criminal actions of a few bankers, widely criticized as “banksters” in recent years.
The Luxembourg-based European Free Trade Association (EFTA) court, of which the Icelandic government is a member, issued its landmark ruling on January 28 addressing two key charges against national authorities. Despite Iceland’s not being a member of the EU, one of the cases against the country was filed by the European Commission, a sort of “executive branch” in the sprawling, increasingly powerful and out-of-control European superstate. The EFTA “Surveillance Authority” also filed a case alleging a violation of its rules.
The first complaint was that the Icelandic government failed to obey an EU directive ordering it to pay about $25,000 worth of “insurance” to every foreign depositor by extracting it from domestic taxpayers — a proposition that would have devastated the 300,000 or so Icelandic citizens and their already-ruined economy for generations to come. While the bankrupt bank’s assets have been used to compensate foreign depositors, the EFTA court ruled that citizens were not responsible for the liabilities.

For my part the conversation is fairly straightforward: Legalize, tax and regulate. Anything less is not a real conversation about Cannabis law reform though any watering down of the current law and any reduction in the amount of government expenditure on these laws should be welcomed by all.

Easily? Well sure it’s easy. All they need to do is get a job, buy themselves a computer and then purchase a broadband connection. If they can manage that on their own then maybe they’ve earned the right to jerk off to something other than a lingerie catalogue.
Now if no one is arguing that young people didn’t have sex before the internet then an example of young people having sex is hardly proof that pornography is either the cause or the problem. If you don’t want your kids (or rather, your teenage boys) to be jerking off 24/7 to pornography then do something about it.

John Minto posted last week an article entitled “The feral rich – how can we help them?”, taking aim well and truly at the richest people (and in a previous article he makes it very clear that this includes John Key). He has basically taken an article from “New Internationalist” magazine, whatever the hell that is, which identifies these “undeserving rich” as a menace to the community and suggests 10 ways we could help them. Among the highlights are:
- Gang culture – break up their vicious criminal gangs (our Business Roundtable?…) by arresting their ringleaders and locking them up.
- Parenting – provide parenting classes to teach social values and respect for others that they can pass on to their children (a good idea in general, but is he seriously suggesting that only the rich are in need of this???)
- Housing – move them out of their overvalued ghettos in the centres of the world’s capitals. Turn over the properties that they own, but barely occupy, to public use and social housing.
- Crime and rehab – crack down on repeated climate crime offenders by confiscating their luxury cars and private jets. Rehabilitate persistent offenders by teaching them how to walk and use public transport.
- Employment – wean the workshy off the benefits of unearned profits. Break trust fund dependence. Get underserving recipients on to work experience schemes.
- Profligacy – target contraception towards problem families with morbidly obese carbon footprints fuelled by irresponsible lifestyles.
The really scary part comes at the end:
Um … excuse me? Did I read that right? Do we seriously have the vice president of a political party of New Zealand attempting to incite an illegal uprising, having gangs of thugs going around arresting anybody who happens to be “richer” than they consider appropriate for the crime of being a business leader, confiscating their property, and randomly evicting them from their houses so that squatters can move in?

Andrei, “offence” is an emotion and is purely subjective. It does not describe another persons actions or anthing external to the “offended” party. Offence is claimed most commonly to manipulate others and prevent views being expressed freely.

A bit off topic but I saw this in today’s NZ Herald (A16).

Now, over nine months there are about 180 working days. On 80 of those days she visited her client. In Auckland’s congested traffic each such visit would entail at least 60 minutes travel. That’s 80 hours on travel, before any talking is done. Incredible!
None of lawyer mates can ever think of any matter whatsoever that would require a lawyer to make 80 individual visits to a client in a 9 month period.

20 yrs ago we knew what racism & sexism was in the vocabulary sense – anything said that was pointless and unconstructive. Most people had the manners to listen to what was said, and then reject it if it had no value. End of matter.

In a major victory for taxpayers in Iceland, an obscure transnational court ruled against the European Union and a similar supranational body last week, deciding that the tiny population of the island nation was not responsible for the massive liabilities of a private Icelandic bank that went bust during the 2008 economic meltdown. Establishment analysts blasted the decision as a “blow to global banking,” but Icelanders and proponents of the free market celebrated the verdict as a big win for the people and market principles — after all, they argue, citizens should not be forced to pay for the reckless and potentially criminal actions of a few bankers, widely criticized as “banksters” in recent years.
The Luxembourg-based European Free Trade Association (EFTA) court, of which the Icelandic government is a member, issued its landmark ruling on January 28 addressing two key charges against national authorities. Despite Iceland’s not being a member of the EU, one of the cases against the country was filed by the European Commission, a sort of “executive branch” in the sprawling, increasingly powerful and out-of-control European superstate. The EFTA “Surveillance Authority” also filed a case alleging a violation of its rules.
The first complaint was that the Icelandic government failed to obey an EU directive ordering it to pay about $25,000 worth of “insurance” to every foreign depositor by extracting it from domestic taxpayers — a proposition that would have devastated the 300,000 or so Icelandic citizens and their already-ruined economy for generations to come. While the bankrupt bank’s assets have been used to compensate foreign depositors, the EFTA court ruled that citizens were not responsible for the liabilities.

Although opponents of reform don’t want a conversation. Fear and ignorance permits the status quo and a conversation can only undermine that.
For my part the conversation is fairly straightforward: Legalize, tax and regulate. Anything less is not a real conversation about Cannabis law reform though any watering down of the current law and any reduction in the amount of government expenditure on these laws should be welcomed by all.

For me (and my taxes) I would have marijuana and E legal for personal use. The state should manufacture E. Its a far better drug for young dancers/party animals than booze. (I have a glass of wine beside me) Pot if sold free of additives is recreational tho I dont go there myself.
