Horseburgers
February 15th, 2013 at 2:00 pm by David FarrarAP reports:
The scandal has uncovered the labyrinthine workings of the global food industry, where meat from a Romanian slaughterhouse can end up in British lasagna by way of companies in Luxembourg and France. …
The trail of illicit horsemeat stretching across Europe spread still further Thursday when Rangeland Foods, a processing factory in Ireland, said it had withdrawn some batches of burger products which contained beef supplied from Poland after it tested positive for up to 30 per cent horse meat.
Food Safety Authority of Ireland said the products had been sold to the catering and wholesale sectors and distributed to Ireland, Britain, Spain, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
Processed food containing horsemeat has also surfaced in Germany, where two national supermarkets have pulled frozen lasagna from their shelves.
I think there is a marketing opportunity here.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been eating horse meat and liking it. They should turn necessity into a virtue and do a campaign for horseburgers. They could use slogans such as “Tastier than you thought” and “An equine surprise”.

I don’t think people would buy horse burgers.
From my experience, people prefer beef or chicken, sometimes lamb.
A horse burger is unlikely to be as popular as KFC’s DoubleDown and could result in consumers fleeing the burger chain that offers them.

Seeing in what products that meat was found, I thought that adding horsemeat was probably an improvement on the original

In Austria they have specialty butchers that sell horsemeat.
Vote:An niche market, but it seems quite a profitable one.

Reminds me of a couple of oldies:
1. They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? by the Racing Cars.
2. Horse Hospitals from The Far Side.

The foodie writer Jeffrey Stiengarten (sp?) did and expose when he was writing for Vouge USA. Turns out that all the pet horses brought for lil Sally by the rich Yanks end up going to slaughter houses when they are not wanted anymore and end up being shipped to Europe as edible horse meat. Course all the people who read Vouge USA are the very people that buy horses for lil Sally so there was a bit of a kerfuffle about this.
When I was last in Europe I tried to get a horse steak at a resturant but couldnt find one, its meant to be very tasty but corser grained than beef. Fries cooked in horse fat are meant to be amazing !
Wiki says 4.7 mil horses are eaten each year! Giddyup!

Horse Butchers in Italy, have pictures on the wall of the horses which have ‘sired’ what you are about to buy. Horse meat in Italy is popular and apparently tastes like a more richer cut of beef.

Most French supermarkets have Cheval (Horse) in their meat section. I’ve never tried it myself but as they only eat much the same food as cows and sheep I can’t really see a problem with eating it.

It is actually worse than that. A lot of the horse meat is actually donkey

Apparently this can result in outbreaks of Ass Burgers syndrome.

New Zealand is actually one of the world’s leading exporters of Cheval.
I also heard on National Radio that demand for horse is now ten times what it was before this “scandal”.

Interesting.
I’d have picked a different marketing opportunity – NZ beef guaranteed to actually be beef, to not have pink sludge in it, etc etc.

If you think this is a scam (where the actual nature of the product can be checked by DNA) – youve no idea how big the scam is concerning things like “environmentally friendly” or “organic” or “fairtrade” or similar feel good descriptions. These things are all based on – well someones word. Yea i know they say they have certification systems – but they cant check anything for accuracy.
So all youse people gobbling up organic foods or vegan or any of these sort of ‘feel good’ things – truth is you are probably eating something that is anything but what it says.
Vote:So stop wasting your money now that you know youve been conned.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, rabbit populations are seen as a disaster for farmers, not as a fantastic protein source.
I’d buy rabbit meat any day.

The market has beaten you to it, David. As noted above there is now some significant demand showing up for horsemeat, and sentimental reasons apart, why not ?

I’ve had horse steaks a few times (but not for some years). They were very good – beef-like but richer (as mentioned above) would be good description. Never understood why cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs are “ok” to eat, but horses are not.

I’ve had donkey, it tastes a little like beef.
I tried to have dog in Korea but you have to go to specialty restaurants and I ran out of time

Some feedback from Europe. ( You may need to Google ‘Shergar’ and ‘Red Rum’ to make sense of some of it
Tesco treble club card points are now on offer for all petrol & burgers! The deal is called………..:
Only fuel and horses
Think I’ve just had 1 of them Tesco burgers cos when I had done I had a bit between my teeth
Yet more Tesco food scandal – Apparently they’ve found uniquorn in the veggie burgers.
Tesco are now favourites to sponsor both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and The Grand National
I was in Tesco this morning and they had White rum and Dark rum in the spirits section. I asked if Red rum was out of stock or was located in the meat section.
How do you like your burgers? Well done or rare?
I’ll have one each way & I prefer mine good to firm.
Is it a coincidence hamburgers is an anagram of Shergars bum…???
I think someone is sending me death threats; I woke up this morning and found a Tesco burger on my pillow
Despite the recent news, Tesco’s say their sales of beef burgers remain stable
Two burgers please, easy on the dressage.
They taste even better with a bit of ‘filly’ on.
The company that supplies Tesco with its burgers has now foalded.
If you think their burgers are good, try the meatballs, they’re the dogs b*ll*cks.

Keiser Report: Horsemeat Burger vs Dutch Sandwich (E406)
In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the honkey infestation causing an inflationary vortex and the Dutch sandwich being the financial equivalent of a horsemeat burger. And how the FSAs – the Financial Services Authority and the Food Standards Agency – operate with a similar cover up mentality. In the second half of the show, Max Keiser talks to anthropologist, David Graeber, author of Debt: The First 5000 Years, about the dollar, a war backed currency, being displaced by gold and about who killed Aaron Swartz and why.
