They look nice people.

If they can pay the bills, what's the issue?

Looks like they are raising a brood of future productive, happy taxpayers.

Our demographics aren't great, we need more babies to pay the bills in future.

What's not to like ?

Lucy, you're a feminist right? And never had any kids?
I'm just guessing.
I doubt you have any idea what it's like to raise 10 kids. You think it's easy?

It IS an inspirational story, especially when you consider how many children come from broken homes, or how many are aborted before they even make it into this world.

Yes, it's what women and families are supposed to do, but quite often we find miracles in the so-called ordinary or mundane.

When someone does well at their profession (and being a mother is a job) should they not deserve praise?
When a musician who is just doing his job does it very well, he is praised. Or a painter, or a scientist, or a cricketer. These are all just people doing their jobs. Scoeity looks at the best of them and say, 'well done'; and they inspire others.

Well, being a mother is no less than any other of these jobs (albeit unpaid monetarily). Some do it better than most. Some do it very well. Some excel. And should they not be praised as much as anyone else who excels at their work?

This is what marriage is all about. This is what family is all about. This is what society is all about.
When parents do well at bringing up children they add perhaps more to society than even a musician or a poet.
They create the future and populate it with their values.

This type of family grows our country and our country's future.

I'm absolutely outraged!!! There is nothing in the least bit 'inspirational' about having 10 kids! This is not something to aspire to! Albert Einstein is inspirational, Sir Edmond Hilary is inspirational, doctors, nurses and teachers that help people every day are inspirational. But the fact that two people had ten kids and are raising them themselves? They are just doing what they should do! Since when do we congratulate people for simply doing their job? Have our standards really sunk that low? It's like congratulating someone for not cheating on their partner. Doing the very minimum that is expected is NOT inspirational!
No, no, no - 'inspirational' is reserved for those people who go beyond doing their jobs. For those people who are helping others, who are making a difference in our communities. Not people who are merely looking after the children they chose to create. It's not like they took in ten kids off the street and are raising them - now that would be inspirational. But raising your own kids? How are they helping our community? And the fact that you label this an 'inspiration' and something that we should all 'aspire' to is quite frankly disgusting.
Please David - don't make any 'inspirational' speeches to teenagers! I can just see your speech now - 'the most inspirational thing is for men and women to get married, have children AND look after them!' Have you gone mad? It seems our bloggersphere has joined the mainstream media in 'dumbing' down our society further.
I have no problem with this couple having as many kids as they want. My only objection is you singling it out as something remarkable, inspirational or special. It is none of those things.

Sooooooo. Going back to the original story, it would appear that the family receives no financial help:
"Their grocery bill is around $500 a week and they receive no financial assistance from the Government, Melanie said.

"My husband is working and building a business so it is not unlike him to get up 4am to do invoicing, then go to work at 6am, come home at 6pm and help with the kids."

So there, misanthropes.

Even Gareth Morgan will not like this large family. What if when these kids grow up they get right into cats?

How many extra cats is that going to be then... hmmm? A lot potentially. This family could have a large negative impact on native birds. According to Gareth's thinking.

What if.... one of the kids is barren... and so because they can't have their own large family... as kids of large families are often want to follow in their parent's footsteps.... they turn into a crazy person and get 20 cats as child substitutes? You see... I hope the parents are teaching their kids about the possible pitfalls uniquely associated with their choice of family size.

LR&C, it's not that simple.

If we looked after everyone as we should then we'd have enough for everyone.
Do you realize that America burns one third of it's wheat by producing bio-fuel to keep cars going? Which in turn pushes up food costs.

This from The Economist magazine -

But the rise in prices is also the self-inflicted result of America's reckless ethanol subsidies. This year biofuels will take a third of America's (record) maize harvest. That affects food markets directly: fill up an SUV's fuel tank with ethanol and you have used enough maize to feed a person for a year. And it affects them indirectly, as farmers switch to maize from other crops. The 30m tonnes of extra maize going to ethanol this year amounts to half the fall in the world's overall grain stocks.
