A swallow does not make spring, but I wonder if the opposition parties have not ‘cried wolf’ too much over alleged ‘wrongs’ of the PM and Ministers, especially when Labour and NZ First had similar sorts of issues when in government and at present the opposition parties have little to offer.

Have you considered showing these results as a range based on the 95% margin for each value?

Its funny how cheap nz is when a poll of 1000 people is supposedly representative of millions.
Vote:maybe they should poll the same people again.
What a cheap country

This is great news for the Nats. I can only imagine the left sobbing

How long till the calls come out to ditch the Labour leader?
Let’s see it at over 50% for three consecutive polls before we get too excited, but at least we can have a chuckle over the angsting in both Labour and the Greens (they’ll be fuming at a drop to 10-odd percent.)

“Its funny how cheap nz is when a poll of 1000 people is supposedly representative of millions.”
In theory, a poll of 1000 has about a margin of error of about 3% – basic stats – there are world of assumptions around that – many of which while not true are true enough to add a couple of per cent to the accuracy figure. So the inaccuracy can easily be 5%. The accumulation of polls is a much better figure.

My (completely unjustified, with very little thought) theory:
National are finally doing some of the things that “mean Tories” are meant to do – “cracking down” on beneficiaries.
Now, I know they haven’t cracked down at all, they’ve barely done a thing, but the majority of the public doesn’t want partners of beneficiaries to get away with being complicit in ripping off the taxpayer.
The bonus is that Labour knows these moves are popular, so you get a vague, stupid sounding “we agree with the princ.. uh, um, needs to.. uh be, further checks and…” when they try to argue against it.
John Key needs to actually start with some of the more “populist” policies that “right-wingers” are said to have. Increasing penalties for violent crime is a good one, and extending the BeneCard to beneficiaries with drug convictions would be another.
Unfortunately he’s in a coalition with a racist party, and is trying to pass the most misunderstood and emotive issue (“asset sales”) at the same time having to bribe the Maori Party – and has made nearly no progress!

‘It’s the only poll which is accurate.’????????

Why would the left be upset by this? National is left wing enough I would have thought. I bet they are secretly happy because National si doing as good a job as any Labour Party ever has to redistribute the wealth created by the few tp give to the many and in so doing stuff the economy.

These polls have become meaningless in a long term sense.
Our political spectrum has swung so far to the left that the style of government we elect only determines how fast we head towards total economic meltdown.
Our political parties are only differentiated by the scale and focus of their re-distributive largesse, not by any policy of substance, designed to build a better country for for children and grandchildren.

John Key has started the year with a much tighter grip on his Government. But the hapless Ms Parata still has the capacity to lose National the election with her arrogant mishandling of the education portfolio.

Andrea Vance wrote about poll volatility, and quotes David Shearer making valid points:
If there was a poll choices for
Vote:- Something better than what’s on offer
- I can’t be bothered with politics at the moment
they would probably score quite well. Poll volatility – Shearer could be right

I said it re the last poll and I say it again.
Vote:Political polls should be limited to two a year maximum and none in the last six months prior to an election.
They are a total waste of time.
And what about the last election. Right up until just before the election took place NZ First wasn’t polling high enough to get a seat. The media are still trying to work out what happened on polling day.
