Bias is poison in a professional journalist in the same way dishonesty is poison in a financial advisor. It’s not tolerated in the latter, why do we accept it in the former?

I didn’t write ‘anonymous blog commenter’, I wrote ‘National members’.

I don’t think I was comparing things that are too disparate – one person speaking as if others in their group agree with their prejudice is likely much like another person speaking as if on behalf of others who aren’t speaking for themselves.

You’ve taken Brian Rudman’s opinion as representative of other journos simply because he spoke as if it was.

I doubt you’ll do the same when next some foolish National party member expresses some prejudice in terms that suppose their fellow members agree.

And the similarity between the two does not, I think, stretch any comparison.

The facts about the Herald are in in its 2005 editorial the day before the election. Both the Herald and Dom Post editorials have been anti union, pro market and pro tax cuts for decades.

But their staff in comparison – incude people across the spolitical spectrum, and sometimes the news they have to report is inconvenient to those of the left and the right. This is not bias.

Labour and the left think the print media is biased against them.

The only reason TV 3 is seen as biased is because TV 1 is so paranoid they will be sold off if they upset the government – just like the MP form coalitions with National fearing the Maori seats will be abolished if they do not.

I’d rather journalists and columnists were open about alignment. For starters, I’d know when an alternate view was being espoused to broaden my thoughts on an issue.

Rudman, who would probably describe himself as liberal-left-ish, is clearly taking the piss. Short of a sub-clause to the sentence – ‘and I jest here’ – I don’t know how he could make it more obvious. Can none of you people see this?

Just as Matt McCarten writes against national — although , McCarten is rabid, he disagrees with anything national on a philosophical basis and that is just dumb.

(Even at a face reading: Given that “colleague” in this case probably wouldn’t include any non-anti-government media denizens it’s hard to call it a revelation. But in my opinion a face reading makes little sense in terms of the column or the wider context.)
