As much as I have a rather critical, dim view of David Shearer’s “leadership skills”, I feel this is a bit below the belt! Whosoever put this together has an agenda, that is clear. Now, one must speculate, was this perhaps started by someone belonging to the severely dissenting ones on the left, or does David Farrar have some undisclosed, unofficial “connections” to certain skilled video makers with the more extreme National or ACT ties, who want to do all to completely dismantle what is left of Labour now?

In any case, once things go this far, the excuses to keep a leader facing such acts in the position, who is now incessantly, prayer-like repeating “hands on”, “hands on”, “hands on”, and then being “without pants on”, referring to different forms of government, they are fast running out now.

Surely, NZ is overdue for better government and serious policy changes, but neither of the big parties appear to be able to offer any real, sensible solutions.

But this is a sad day in NZ politics. The fight is heading below the belt-line now.

And on that topic I admit that I just can’t stand John Key’s voice. There is no other [current] party leader that I would want to be PM, so I look past it, but it grates. Not an inspiring orator by a long stretch.

I don’t much like David Shearer. I am not a Labour voter either. But I do think this is a silly video, and hardly an indictment on him is his intellect. You read some of the papers this guy’s written and it’s quite clear that he does have a brain (maybe one that I don’t tend to agree with – although DPF might when it comes to ‘Outsourcing War’).

Shearer’s not exactly Einstein, but it’s a frustrating and scary degeneration of politics that the measure of a party leader is their ability to orate perfectly prepared soundbites rather than well-considered ideas – even if they stutter a little amount.
It’s not actually like this guy is an out-lier in terms of other leaders; the Prime Minister isn’t a fantastic speaker either, but it’s not really their appearance or articulation that I judge our politicians by. What they say is more important than how they say it. I wager good money that we could probably present Judy Bailey in a similar fashion if we selected the right bits of film. Or even Stephen Fry.

Notwithstanding, I am not sure Shearer is the right man for the job.
