The Waitangi Circle Line was 30 this year. The types of Circle Line that the police discourage are the ones where Brits participate in. In fact Westminster council are very strict on these events - and the police enforce the drinking laws rigidly. However foer Waitangi Day, the drinking laws are relaxed (unofficially) and the police actively pursue a policy of commonsense - which we mostly reciprocate. A few minutes of TV airtime will never tell the true story of the fun and good natured fun that people had on this day. But it sure gets the armchair experts in a right tizz. :)

Waitangi Day is as good a reason as any to get shit-faced....

National Day? Really? What a joke. What a fucking joke.

And what will this year's sideshow be? What will the angry restless natives do this time to provide the media images for the 6pm news?

For the record, I didnt mean kiwis and Circle Line pub crawls - I meant Circle Line pub crawls. Apparently its been a done thing for some time. My wife's grandfather flew Dakota's during the war, and he recalls his mates going on them in the late 30's and into and during the war. He wasnt sure if it was Circle Line, but they were well established even back then.

More power to them I say :)

And kevin, if youre paying 8 quid for a pint, I have a bridge you can buy :)

What utter claptrap. I have done the pub crawl 10 times, Saturday was my 10th and I always expect the same fucking idiot arm chair Kiwis back home to pass judgement upon it. God you lot are a moaning judgemental bunch and 100% incorrect, as I expected since you probably only saw that 2 minute clip on TV1 news. We cringe when we see the newspaper clippings of the shame that Kiwis back home commit on Waitangi Day, protests and violence and on the other hand, absolute apathy.
At least we respect it - ZERO arrests, police admitting that 5000 of us are better behaved than 100 Brits, no damage to property and at this stage no complaints made to the police or high commission.

Ignorance is bliss guys. No wonder so many Kiwis in the UK are desperate to stay over here and do what they can to get their visas changed to stay longer. Petty negative nonsense like these comments, over a day that produced less trouble than the Wellington 7s. Says it all really. Grow up.

PS. Kevin, pints are not 8 quid each. It's cheaper here to buy a pint than it is in NZ.

I never said that tropicana.
At eight quid a pint, it would be difficult to get pissed in London these days. Pub crawls aren't exactly the best way to celebrate your national day but it's better than not celebrating it at all. Let's hope it goes well and not to many expats make tits of themselves.

The Kiwi's in wartime London would have been familiar with the idea, if not the actual event in relation to the Haka - 28th Maori Battalion was well known throughout Empire Military Forces. From memory, it was actually performed 'in anger' before several scraps in the Western Desert campaign, and I believe that Freyberg was accorded at least one 'performance' in his honour (at Maaadhi Camp) while in the Middle East as Officer Commanding NZ Military Forces Middle East. However, the Haka was widely (and correctly IMHO), perceived as something that was very specifically Maori, (and very special and worthy of respect, as a result) and as 28th Maori were operating in Italy and the Western Desert the haka would have been unlikely to have been overly familiar in London. Unfortunately I can't remeber if Bill Jordon (NZ Hi Commissioner to London) was accorded the honour of a haka while he was in London or not. (it was along time ago). i somehow doubtr it - there were other minor distractions at the time - a war, for instance. Hope this helps.

Well, I have just spent Australia Day in Japan, and witnessed some of the most disgusting drunken yobbo behavior I have ever seen. The Australian bogan youth is certainly a cretinous animal.

I now know why the Australian tourism industry is fucked, no tourist will ever want to visit the place after seeing the country showcased overseas by these imbeciles.

I look forward to seeing Waitangi celebrations here for a comparison - dollars to doughnuts the Kiwis will be better behaved. I do pray that no one starts that stupid rain dance though. The only thing worse than that is a drunken bogan doing the Aussie, Aussie, Aussie chant!

The Circle Line pub crawl has long standing roots, dating back to the late 30's or early 40's Im told - I cant verify.

Did it once myself, with a bunch of mates for a stag do, back in the early 80's. Highlights included being followed into a toilet by a woman who said nothing but was fascinated watching me have a piss; an Indian mate of ours who could not drink at all having 3 half pints, swicthing to lemonade, and then falling asleep in his soup at dinner; and me chasing two gorgeous Spanish grils down the road near Whiteleys begging for a phone number.

Got the number too :)

Its fun, no one dies, and we are all young once.

I watched a clip on the news about this cringe worthy event, and, as usual they had to embarrass us even more at the end of the clip with a shot of a dozen or so white boys stripping off their shirts to perform a rain dance.

Why is it that Kiwis feel the need to perform this meaningless dance?...it's not as if people from overseas know what it is all about, they just see a bunch of pissed white boys waving their arms in the air and sticking their tongues out.

Most foreigners think it is funny, and ,despite what many say here they do not hold the rain dance in awe at all.
