Peter Dunne admits that last week wasn’t his best in a “week that was” video, when his tax consulation was sabotaged while he was away on a havy travel schedule. But he shrugs it off and dogedly loks ahead, at what he is determined to achieve – “all the other things that are happening that United Future is playing a major part in”.

    * Our synthetic drugs legislation, our psychoactive substances bill…is seen as world leading, innovative, and a step that all other countries should follow.
    * In the next couple of weeks or so, the child support legislation, bringing about the major child support change for the first time since the scheme was implemented over twenty years ago, the culmination of a four year project.
    * The whole issue of superannuation back on the agenda…United Future’s flex-super, we’ll have a discussion paper out in the next few months.
    * We’re also going to release in the next couple of months our new national suicide prevention action plan for the next three years, that’s the culmination of a lot of work over the last year to eighteen months.
    * We’ve got the game animal council bill about to come back through parliament.

That’s on top of leading a party and his electorate duties. He is heavily criticised, but he works as hard as just about any MP.

Great photo and story on the front page of the DomPost today about three young people with down’s syndrome. They are all high achievers, and I’m sure they enrich the lives of everyone they come into contact with. But the grisly reality is that any pregnant woman nowadays who is even remotely suspected of carrying a baby with down’s is immediately placed under enormous pressure to abort (i.e. kill) the baby. Shame on us.

    Cato –
I tried reading a less-politicized article about those killings last night, but I couldn’t finish it. I had to give up part way through and play with my little baby boy to put it out of my mind.

(And I say that as someone who has watched Al Qaeda beheadings, WTC jumpers etc etc…)

I’m a political leftie and my opinion is that some forms of abortion should be available early on in pregnancy. But not murdering newborn babies with scissors, obviously. That guy should hang, and his accomplices had better have pretty good excuses. I don’t know if this story is really ammunition for a generalised rant about American society as a whole though, as Mark Steyn seems to believe it is.

(The left and the right both love to cry equal and opposite complaints about how f*cked “American society” is, which only leads me to suppose “American society” is probably on a fairly good track in reality.)

    to

    back to

    Pressure – really?

I ask because we have recent experience of being in the system.

We didn’t bother with the 12 week scan with our boy (who does not have Downs, just for clarity!) and we told the midwife the reason is we wouldn’t abort for anything other than incompatible-with-life type problems (such as heart deformity, anencaphaly etc etc) which the early scan isn’t much good at picking up anyway.

We didn’t really feel under any “pressure” either way…

Yes, but if you had had the 12 or 20 week scans, and either suggested any kind of abnormality, that’s when the pressure would have come on. A friend had a 20 week test that suggested down’s. She was told that the baby may also have heart defects. Because she refused an abortion the obstetrician refused to have anything further to do with her, and her midwife dumped her. She was made to feel selfish and villainous. She was eventually delivered by a midwife she didn’t know. The baby had an umbilical hernia and is now a completely healthy lad.

But what these spineless cowards are really doing is selling out western culture. Our historical heritage built up over centuries and underpinned by a belief in individual freedom. They are selling it down the drain for the sake of a few whining ignorant brainwashed collectivist savages from a country that is still so uncivilised it is ruled by army generals and places its citizens in re-education camps and jails them for political dissent.

At M7K and RRM. I was pressured into having a fetal fold scan because there is a higher chance of DS with twins. So I said no the first three times and on the last time I was asked I said yes. Out of journalistic interest.
I’d refused the reading with the first three kids because I’d ‘ave just trucked on and had a Downs Syndrome kid. And if that makes me a better person then so be it.
All my friends who had twins were pressured nto the nuchal fold. One got a reading that indicated high DS risk. It was normal on the second reading.
However, it was good practice for neonates when you’ve really got to know when to stand up for yourself. They are just fucking awful in New Zealand neonates and I bet that is in large part why the Samoan couple frigged off with their baby in the story I posted above.
Back to DS – it’s well known they want to reduce the load on the medical system of DS so they do encourage abortion in New Zealand. They changed the policies about 206 to make it automatic unless you opt out. Then they provided some marketing bullshit about how wonderful it is to give women “more information”.

JERUSALEM — Palestinian militants in Gaza fired two rockets on Thursday at southern Israel, on the second day of President Barack Obama’s visit to the region, Israeli police said.

One of the rockets exploded in the courtyard of a house in the border town of Sderot early in the morning, causing damage but no injuries, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. The other landed in an open field.

Obama was miles away in Jerusalem at the time, preparing to visit the Israel Museum. Later in the day he is due to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Looks like Planned Parenthood in the U.S has defrauded the Govt of $377 million.

Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys have filed yet another lawsuit against the Planned Parenthood abortion business to expose abortion giant’s mishandling of taxpayer dollars.

The pro-life legal group alleges Planned Parenthood submitted “repeated false, fraudulent, and/or ineligible claims for reimbursement” to the state of Washington’s Department of Social and Health Services, according to a federal lawsuit made public Tuesday.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Jonathan Bloedow, a Washington resident who discovered the alleged frauds through state open records requests.

The lawsuit alleges that Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest filed at least 25,000 false claims with HRSA for reimbursements in excess of the amount allowed for oral contraceptive pills and at least another 25,000 for reimbursements in excess of the amount allowed for “emergency contraceptive” (“Plan B”) pills under the federal government’s 340B drug reimbursement program. Total damages could be as much as $377,134,130.

Leave company tax and lower personal income tax? According to a Treasury report:

Personal tax cuts may have a greater economic benefit than cutting company tax rates, says a joint report by Treasury and the Inland Revenue Department.

The finding contradicts the belief that cuts to the corporate tax rate are the best stimulant for economic growth.

They recommend officials further investigate options for reducing personal tax.

The report says most of the benefits of personal tax cuts accrue to Kiwi residents, whereas some benefits of company income tax cuts would be enjoyed by non-residents, given New Zealand’s high level of foreign capital ownership.

minto, that is very cruel your fellow socialists. The fascists weren’t hung up on race so much as being nationalist. Hitler’s anti-semitism was an addition to fascism rather than a part of the original ethos.

Anyway, we all know that most British National Party members have come out of the UK Labour Party and sits slightly to the left of most Labour policies. I suggest that a better forum for your inane comment would be the Standard, as they claim to be socialists.

Longknives, I heard JK on the radio saying that yesterday, but he used misdemeanour in relation to some of the players HE coached who got into trouble with the police. He was giving his opinion on how seriously the Japanese police take incidents we may regard as minor here. I don’t believe he considered Collins’ actions a misdemeanour.

A man died and went to Heaven. After reaching the gates to Heaven the man was talking with Saint Peter and he asked, “I know I was good during my life, and I really appreciate being brought to Heaven, but I’m really curious….what does Hell look like?”

Saint Peter thought about it a moment and finally said, “I’ll tell you what, I’ll let you see what Hell looks like before you are officially entered into Heaven. Come with me.” And so Saint Peter lead the man to an elevator and said, “Take this elevator to the very bottom floor. When the door opens you will see what Hell’s like, but whatever you do, do not get out of the elevator.”

The man said, “Thank you” and then climbed into the elevator and hit the button for the lowest floor. After nearly an hour in the elevator the doors opened and the man peered out. Before him was a lifeless, frozen wasteland. All the man could see were huge mountains of ice through blankets of snow. Remembering what Saint Peter said, the man quickly pushed the button for the top floor, the doors closed and he traveled back up to Heaven.

After returning to Heaven the man approached Saint Peter and said, “I’m ready to enter into Heaven now, but before I do I have just one more question.” “Go ahead”, replied Saint Peter, and so the man asked, “I thought Hell would be fire and brimstone, but instead all I saw was snow and ice. Is that what it’s really like?”

Saint Peter thought about this for a second and finally answered, “Snow and ice, eh? I guess the Auckland Blues finally won the Super Fifteen!!”

Yes you’d think so wouldn’t you nasska. Isn’t it a shame half of us doesn’t seem to share the same sense of humour?

I mean if I printed that out and put it on my cubicle wall, I predict only about 25% of us would LOL, another 25% would smile inwardly and walk quickly away, and 50% of us would look very dour indeed.

    What’s going on?

IMO, humanity is broken. Somewhere sometime over the rainbow, way out West, something happened that none of us can point to and now we’re just not allowed to have a good old larf, ever again, lest we offend someone.

For example, how come only the Germans have a word for “pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others” when this is a very human emotion? What? We’re not “allowed” to admit it?

I just hope the next time the lefties raise the Scandinavian countries as stellar examples of pwogwessivism, someone from the Conservative side points out that according to Wiki, Schadenfreude has been calqued in Danish and Norwegian as skadefryd, in Swedish as skadeglädje and in Finnish as vahingonilo.

I wonder what our new Speaker would say to that getting written into Hansard?

Humour has certainly changed over the years Reid. A number of things have influenced it & certainly the way men & women engage has been a huge influence. Tell a joke about shotgun weddings or honeymoon surprises nowadays & the best you can hope for is that your audience will fake a titter & look away.

That said there is currently no shortage of carping feminists actively seeking opportunities to be offended. Most of the purse lipped sullen misfits can be safely written off as a blight on society.
