Good morning on a beautiful day, I am off to watch the grandchildren do the Weetbix tryathalon, they will compete with hundreds of other kids who want to do the very best they can. A refreshing concept today I know.

More on David Cunliffe’s comments on reducing the GST threshold for foreign purchases. DPF was over-egging – there is very unlikely to be any fixed Labour policy on this yet.

But Cunliffe was also downplaying his comments. I have obtained a recording and it sounds like Cunliffe clearly thinks it’s “a no-brainer” to have a much lower threshold.

Just following up on John’s question, given that we’re talking about a a smaller picture here, which is the GST collection…

…is this not a no brainer, why don’t we have a single point low threshold, and as John said, stop subsidising foreign commerce…

…surely it’s a no brainer, why hasn’t it been done before?

How low? Cunliffe was speaking at a research seminar sponsored by Booksellers NZ, so the clear implication is book price low. As low as DPF suggested – iTunes low, which would be a dollar or two?

I don’t expect Cunliffe to commit himself at this stage at least, but it will be interesting to see what policy Labour comes up with on this, especially considering Cunliffe’s comments on compliance costs on the proposed car-park tax.

Of course it should be more or less the opposite: MP who want to retain commercial assets in state hands should have their superannuation invested in those assets. Hence Michael Cullen’s and Helen Clark’s super should be invested in Kiwirail. All Labour MPs should have super invested in Solid Energy, etc. If they played with their money instead of ours, we might see different stances.

It doesn’t matter where ministers “invest” their money.

They get copper plated taxpayer guaranteed pensions no matter how shit their performance.They should only get pensions (or salaries)if we’re in continuous surplus.That would force ’em to be careful with our money.

I am the same as you – missed the programme, signed the petition and registered (my children) for shares.
I still haven’t decided on buying the shares.
Could be a good short/medium term option but think that maybe in the future that energy production may be totally revolutionised by some technological advancement that sees very cheap and easy solution supersede our current production.
ETA: Maybe that’s the real reason for the govt wanting to flick it 😉

Two leaders is an absurdity. But what would you expect from a racist party but for it to be sexist as well. And the Maori party is just as bad. Don’t they think woman have the ability to lead without a token position being created for them. Obviously not. So much for equality.

This morning on Marae Investigates Shane Jones said “In politics if you are fundamentally split it won’t be long until it’s all over”.

He was referring to the Maori party leadership muddle, but it is not difficult to think about that in terms of his own parrty. Camp Shearer and Camp Robertson have an alliance (until Robertson decides otherwise?) but there seems to be a fundamental split with camp Cunliffe.

Will it be long? Shane Jones – a fundamental split “until it’s all over”.

Proposed change to residency test could claw expat Kiwis’ offshore earnings

Expat Kiwis and jetsetting workers face higher taxes under a crackdown on residency rules.

Inland Revenue wants to block a loophole that allows “fly-in fly-out” workers to avoid paying income tax.

Migrants buying homes in New Zealand could also be considered tax residents under the proposals.

At present, residents are taxed if they live in New Zealand for six months of the year, or have a permanent place of abode.

Under the changes, factors such as bank accounts and family ties will be given greater weight when determining whether an individual has a permanent place of abode.

University of Auckland professor Craig Elliffe said “significant” numbers would be affected.

“It seems (the IRD) are intending to be pretty tough on this. The desire to collect tax is pretty extreme at the moment.”

Even though I have no problem with them wanting to protect European cultural values, I have many non European friends and I am concerned about how they would treat them. With my exotic tastes, I would probably be labeled a “race traitor” 🙂

The Weetbix tryathalon was wonderful, with beautiful weather in the Bay, and loads of kids really going as hard as they could.
It somewhat restores my faith in the future in as far as good kids far outweigh the bad and misdirected.

Parents, Grandparents etc all encouraging the youngsters on, good stuff.

They all wanted to do well, and did so, fantastic. Sanitarium needs to be congratulated for sponsoring this event around the country.

The way I see it is by signing the petition (which was not for or against the sales but for a referendum) was merely an ‘interest’ not action – as neither resulted in an affirmative.

I am interested to know what answer a referendum would produce – I think many people are having trouble finding a clear answer on the issue, that ‘sits’ easily with them. We can see points for and against – and from what my colleagues/friends say, they are like me, divided.

I have registered for shares because I want the option of being able to decide, if I don’t register, that option is removed.

Again, registering does not mean I have to purchase the shares or that I support the sales, just that I might be interested (if I should ever get over my 50/50 spit) I had hoped the referendum would decide – as I was prepared to go with a clear answer from the electorate, when asked that specific question. I don’t buy into the ‘election result’ was the referendum. I didn’t vote on that issue and I don’t think a lot of people did find it the most important issue for them vote on.

A lot of people are still divided on this issue – which is why the stats keep varying. We’ve heard from Key, and we’ve heard from the opposing politicians. I’d like to hear from a few politically unbiased speakers on the subject.

Is this good for my country – why is it good, why is it bad and what will the effect in 20 years be if we do/don’t? In non-bullshit language.

This could be the end of Tamihere’s political hopes, if anything like the allegations in the article turn out to have substance.

Lawyer David Smyth, acting for West Harbour, alleged an arrangement was reached between Tamihere and Ivil to allow a West Harbour property mortgaged to Waipareira to be sold and the proceeds loaned to Tamihere.

On May 6 Waipareira’s mortgage over one of West Harbour’s townhouses, Clearwater Cove Unit 7d, was lifted and the property sold.

Property records show companies controlled by Tamihere and his wife settled the $1.36 million purchase of their new home on the Te Atatu Peninsula on the same day the mortgage was discharged.

Smyth, relying on an affidavit from Ivil, told the court the sale of 7d enabled $500,000 to pass to Tamihere: “It was Mr Tamihere himself who procured the discharge of the mortgage . . . so it could be converted into cash to lend to him.”

…Josie Smith, chairwoman of the trust, was unwilling to discuss why the mortgage over 7d was lifted. She said Tamihere had declared his links to Ivil when the deals were signed.

She expressed “utmost confidence” in her chief executive.

“The board of trustees have taken independent advice and are very comfortable with the action taken by the chief executive,” she said.

Smith denied any wrongdoing by Waipareira in the affair and said she would defend her organisation if it was defamed, but said Tamihere, “given his previous political standing, accepts as we do, reasonable scrutiny”.

So who knows if it is true or not, but IF it is, then it would appear yet another case where someone has been treating a taxpayer-funded organisation as their own personal piggy bank and not only that, but the chairman of the organisation has approved of such. Which raises prima facie questions about the fitness of both people to continue in their roles, IF the allegations are true.

Of course, even if they are true, then pointing them out is vewy vewy wacist, whatever happens. That just goes without saying.

Former Cabinet ministers Wyatt Creech and John Luxton, lawyer Jock Irvine and founder Mark Bryers are likely to walk away from the collapse of Blue Chip unless a funder can be found to back action against them.

The four are among a group of directors targeted in two separate lawsuits alleging reckless trading during their time at the helm of the failed property investment scheme.

Blue Chip’s liquidators say around 1200 people are still owed up to $120 million over the 2008 collapse.

Small point but do people know how toxic the gween lightbulbs are? If they break, you need to evacuate the room for 15 mins to let the mercury vapour inside them dissipate and you should not vacuum them up but rather pick up the shards by hand broom and shovel lest the vacuum spread the toxins if used in another room and never cut yourself on them because it will get badly infected. The UK rubbish guys are refusing to pick them up. But hey, even if we’re not safe, at least the enviwonment is, wight? And who knows when the Gweens will make it illegal for us to use anything else but them?

Kea, read a bit more widely on that bullets thing. And you might find that the bullets are not the point. The company “wholesaling” the bullets to the government agencies is a new company, and is owned by major Democratic Party donor organisers. Looks more like a standard but of corruption funnelling money to interested parties and into the democrats coffers than any wild conspiracy.

Penny, to raise a matter as a valid problem, when such problem doesn’t or can’t exist, to tarnish people’s reputation or credibility, is a form of corrupt

Just as not paying your rates to make a point but with inaction, then continuing to not pay them, is also corruption.

Aiding people to damage Council property and steal water is corruption

To claim you are standing for Auckland City Council fighting against corruption, when you are yourself corrupt as indicated above, is further corruption.

She craves attention. She needs attention. Good or bad, it matters little, as long as people acknowledge her. You must realise, she actually does not care that much about many of the issues she squawks on about. She probably doesn’t really much care what shares John Key or any other minister buys. I suspect it matters little to Penny, if she was completely honest. What does matter to Penny is having something – ANYTHING – that she can use to garner attention. And this just happens to be topical and convenient.

Surveillance of a public meeting about the Constitution of a democracy is extraordinary. Is it inept or intentional? Whichever, it is sinister and should not go unchallenged as it is intimidating and has a chilling effect on participating in a democratic process.

I wonder if judicial guidelines or recommendations for the conduct of consultation related to a future constitution exist but were unknown or ignored by CAP?

I have no intention to hide or apologise for my anger at what took place at te Papa under the guise of consultation about a future Constitution.

I respectfully look forward to your reply.

Who’s Getting the “Free Stuff”?

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don’t like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now… The people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So… The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

why does it always go to 8.33

Just so when you change over at the end of Masterchef, expecting to see the start of say, Criminal Minds you have
missed the first 3 minutes of Criminal Minds ( or whatever programme on whatever other TV station starts @ 8.30)

Not with that lead and 2 days to go on a deteriorating pitch against side that’s on the ropes. Good pressure. For the 2nd time in 3 tests the English will be fighting for a draw, possibly without being able to rely on deteriorating weather.

I tend to agree about McCullum not enforcing the follow on. However….

I am firmly of the opinion that NZC and the teams “leadership” sat down at the start of this test series and planned how they could best achieve an outcome that would be acceptable to the cricketing public (and here I do not refer to the morons who prefer that T20 crap).
In their wildest dreams they would have thought that a drawn test series would be a fantastic outcome, McCullum simply could not take the chance of the NZ team batting last on a turning wicket chasing a score of 150 or so. By not enforcing the follow on he (McCullum) is at least taking the chance of a loss out of the equation.

Yes, it is gutless (and another reason why McCullum is a crap captain) but it I suspect that given the amount of abuse heaped upon McCullum and Hesson earlier in the season it was the only option on the table.
