I fully agree – big biz needs to stop insane tax practices that are rorting the Government.
Individual and small-medium businesses are either not able or cannot risk treating their tax affairs in an aggressive manner. Quite apart from the risk of financial ruin, the psychological toll of a run-in with IRD makes it just not worth while. So they are better to play safe and keep under IRD’s radar. Ask end-investors in the Trinity forest scheme how they feel now after IRD took Trinity/ Ben Nevis to the cleaners for breath-taking tax avoidance.
Compare with a large corporate who can afford tax accountants and lawyers to minimise their NZ tax. If they get clobbered by IRD, it is ‘just another day at the office’ for the people concerned.
A tax adviser claims that IRD’s attitude would drive away overseas investment – if that is the case perhaps it is better not to have the investment if it is dependent on aggressive tax attitudes.
If overseas outfits expect NZ to respect and honour intellectual property, then perhaps they should do the same with taxes and not channel profits through Ireland etc.
Off to Ellerslie- Sangster should win the big one…will be boxing a few roughies with him.
When are Auckland Racing going to realize that moving it to a Wednesday in March has been a flop? I believe they were trying to make it NZ’s own ‘Melbourne Cup’? Yet Media coverage and public interest is almost nonexistent.
I heard Duncan Garner on radio the other day bemoaning the fact that “poor people” will not be able to buy shares in Mighty River Power and that they will miss out to the benefit of “rich people”. Poor people also already own the assets, so why pay for them again.
My thoughts were
1. Poor people will be receiving the benefits of the sale of these shares through the distribution of the money into areas such as Health, Education, and Welfare
2. Poor people are net Tax takers not net Tax payers – so they don’t really own these assets anyway

A followup to Rodney Hide’s “hate” comments – I’ve had a chance to talk to ACT members who were at the conference.
I don’t doubt that some believe Hide meant he/they only hate the unions, but obviously it could be easily heard as also hating the poor and Maori – that’s how Jim Hopkins, Patrick Gower, me and others interpreted it at first hearing.
When Hide said “No!” to revisiting it he may well have thought there was nothing wrong with what he said – but there was something wrong with the ambiguity at least, and damage would have been limited if it had been clarified. Only Rodney can do that, albeit belatedly, if he sees the need.
Norman was on the money. All those people who voted on the on-line poll supporting the sale of Mighty River Power were the well offs hanging out to get in first. The others are just numb… but they are the reason we need (as a principle) a citizens stake. Reid had a video last GD showing how 1% own a gigantic share of the wealth in the US and that is the way things will always trend unless we have another game and reshuffle the cards. Look back to the property seminars.. there was real gold there and people made the system work (Dolf DeRoos wrote a book about how him and his greedy partner bought a house a day (or something) in Las Vegas).. that’s why we need things that keep the wealth spread evenly throughout society but reward where it *is* due.
So – our Fijian friends who were getting the just deserts were escapes prisoners who were inside for bank robbery and violent attackes on people.
They should thank their lucky starts theyre in Fiji.
In Singapore thayed be getting a caning (I think they call it a ratan – its no joke)
In china they might be lucky not to be shot (and thei family invoiced for the cost of the bullets)
And its seems in Saudi they might be strung up.
And I hear some yank on the radio calling for an investigation – what cheek – from the land of guantanamo wailing on about someone getting their just punishment.
Bryce Edwards has written a column in D Scene on Labour’s “rising start” David Clark. He’s a loyal party reciter and rewarded for supporting Shearer, but where does he stand politically?
He’s notably close to deputy leader Grant Robertson, who is relatively left-wing, but also incredibly pragmatic.
It’s hard to really judge, apart from the marriage bill where he spoke from the heart he follows the party lines relentlessly.
But he does stand him out from a lacklustre old school Labour caucus.
Clark is just the sort of politician that Labour desperately needs, because the party has failed to rejuvenate in recent years.
Clark is very much the modern look for Labour nice but not too radical.
He would fit in at The Standard like brussel sprouts at a children’s birthday party
“it could be easily heard as also hating the poor and Maori”
Forgive me for not indulging your blog marketing efforts here, Pete, but do you actually believe this is what Rodney Hide meant? If not, why don’t you comment on what he you think he really did mean – rather than what an uncharitable interpretation of what he said might be?
This whole, ‘perception is reality’ thing is getting a bit too cynical and lame.
Give me “old school” Labour any day over the bunch of girlie men they have today. Homo activism, immigration, multiculturalism, equality.
At least in the old days they did represent the working classes. Today they just want to spend our money on freaks and bludgers and create a dependant ,controlled client state.
Give me “old school” Labour any day over the bunch of girlie men they have today. Homo activism, immigration, multiculturalism, equality.
…………
you mean people with opinions like this:
Fantastic piece. Thanks so much.
Vancouver’s experience is probably like Canada’s on the whole. Trudeau brought in multiculturalism by federal directive in the 70s (“Although there are two founding peoples there is no founding culture…” and that mirrored Laurier before him…) Then in 1982, multiculturalism was enshrined in the Charter. Then in the mid-80s a Conservative PM enacted the “Multiculturalism Act”.
Now in Canada’s large cities it’s somewhat amusing to hear people speaking English. Fourth generation Canadians are seen as an amusing relic. Do you eat roasts? Do your parents wear sweaters to dinner and talk about classical music, ha ha ha?
The reality is that in NZ, the hegemony of Anglo Saxon culture refuses to die. The Interfaith dialogue was a fantastic example of that. Also, we never had (much) immigration from Central, Eastern or Southern Europe. We still treat South Africans and Pomps as “one of us”.
I have confronted Chris Trotter with Kowtows masterpiece on Bowalley Road. Ah but I suppose the reaction will be “but we are the intellectual wing of the Labour movement…”?
I also questioned him on the non exclusionary (we are the worlds oyster) principle of Labour Progressives.
hj
Vancouver is a great example of the “multicultural” experience the liberal political elite are so enamoured by.
Massive immigration from China and India has changed the face of the city ,which is actually a number of municipalities.
Richmond is one of the biggest Chinese cities in North America ,while Surrey is an Indian.Canadians then move out ,voting with their feet against govt policy while never admitting that’s what they’re doing.
“Multiculturalism” has created massive ghettoes with new crime problems once practically unheard of. Drug crime and the murder, gun running etc associated with it is a huge problem there with South Americans and Asians heavily involved.
There’s a genuine disquiet there, but the MSM ,the political elite and academia would never admit it.
Meanwhile the French Canadians tenaciously hold to their culture ,all the while backed up by the same legislative process that is destroying the Anglo culture that made Canada such an attractive place.
Multiculturalism is in fact code for destroy the host.
Pete George: You keep repeating the lie that Hide “refused to revisit” his not very well executed joke at the ACT conference…FFS man, get it through your head!! Hopkins, having noted as we all did that Hide’s joke wasn’t well executed, invited him to come up and “have another go at that bit”
HIDE THEN DID SO!! What part of that dont you get? I was there FFS! And I never saw that prick Gower in the audience..unless he ran away when he sighted me….
“The U.S. Attorney General’s refusal to rule out the possibility of drone strikes on American citizens and on American soil is more than frightening – it is an affront the Constitutional due process rights of all Americans.”
Manolo, Obama is going to make it as difficult for the GOP as possible but cutting things that will directly impact people rather than things where budgets can easily be cut.
There’s a graph chart HERE which shows exactly how big the sequester cuts are, and they are minuscule – won’t have any effect at all.
If the government “thinks” that you “might” be a threat, it now reserves the right to arrest you without charges or representation indefinitely, place you in a secret prison overseas or just flat out murder you.
@ Manolo & Kiwigreg, I will miss him, not for his politics etc as was far out there on the socialist fringe & anti-US rhetoric that bordered on paranoia (worked a treat with the locals). But he was hilarious to watch, and for that I think its a shame he’s gone.
Meanwhile, Michelle Obama is using school kids and amputee war veterans as photo props – inviting them along to events that don’t exist, and the veterans to receive awards that don’t exist. That’s disgusting behaviour for the wife of the POTUS.
A teacher writes a blog post HERE on her experience at being invited to Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ school programme, in which kids end up standing around for hours with nothing to eat or drink.
If you are a parent, imagine that you take your child on a trip and they are very excited. Now imagine they have to wait on a bus and stand in straight lines for three hours straight. Then imagine after one hour of “fun” that they have to sit around and wait for three more hours that bus to pick them up. Oh, did I mention that are not allowed to have a morsel of food the entire time? Now, multiply that by 25 to 35. Sounds fun right?! That’s a little bit what the day was like for CPS students, parents and teachers at the Let’s Move! Campaign.
[...]
Finally, the first lady came out. Although she was stunning and her message was powerful, her back was to the children. She was facing the media. I couldn’t help wondering, who is this event really for? Then I realized my students were just a backdrop to this campaign/commercial.
And the veterans. These Tweets from veteran J.R. Salzman –
After considering whether to tell the story, J.R. relented:
In light of Michelle Obama using hungry school kids as props, let me tell you a story about some wounded soldiers it happened to last year.
The following was told to me by the wife of a double amputee who was wounded in Afghanistan, and recovering at Walter Reed.
In 2012 some wounded warriors wives were told they’d receive awards for their duties as non-medical attendants NMA caring for their husbands
The award ceremony would be a luncheon at the Dept of Labor with Michelle Obama, and their wounded husbands would need to attend as well.
Despite the fact many wounded amputees were still hospitalized and had IVs and PICC lines, they were told they had to find dress uniforms.
The found uniforms and got them onto the wounded troops best they could. Unit crests, patches, tabs and awards were a bit half hazard.
The day of the event the wounded warriors and wives were bused from Walter Reed to the Dept of Labor for the award ceremony and luncheon.
After waiting around a while at Dept of Labor they found out there was no award ceremony, or luncheon. They couldnt even get water to drink.
Many of the wounded warriors were sweating in their dress uniforms, in pain, and hungry. Staff didnt even know where a handicap bathroom was
A lot of the guys were dehydrated without IVs and from sweating like crazy in their dress uniforms. (Pain meds make you do that.)
The wounded warriors and wives were nothing more than props for Michelle Obama to announce a new pet program of hers. No awards, no lunch.
Michelle Obama ducked in, gave a speech, grandstanded for the media, took a quick photo or two, then left as fast as she arrived.
The wounded warriors and wives from Walter Reed had done their jobs as props for Michelle Obama and were taken back to the hospital.
If Michelle Obama has the moral depravity to use wounded troops as props, dont be surprised she does it to a few school kids too.
FYI, the person who told me that story stressed they are a big fan of Barack and Michelle Obama, and voted for him.
So, there you go. That’s just utterly DISGUSTING to treat wounded veterans – people who have fought and suffered for you and your country – that way
In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the money printing cargo cults leading to a post-industrial nation of debt addicts, who have forgotten what real wealth is. In the second half of the show, Max Keiser talks to Sandeep Jaitly about debt, inflation, currency kamikazes and Austrian economics.
Jack5 – that rodeo “discussion” has a familiar pattern. A small protest group introduces an issue to the DCC pushing for something to be banned.
With fracking a small protest group introuduced the issue through a community board,it went to the council, an internal report was done and the council then voted to call for a moratorium on fracking. There was absolutely no mention of fracking on the DCC website, unless you happened to be at a small meeting you wouldn’t have known what was going on.
The same Cr Jinty MacTavish was involved. I challenged her on the lack of democratic process, she said it was a great example of democracy, listening to community voices and acting for them.
The same thing is being tried elsewhere. A network of people have worked out that successful democracy means working the system to get your way with as few other people involved as possible.
I see the Transport Safety Authority in America has loosened up a little on what can be carried in planes in on board luggage. Small harmless knives such as pocket knives, some sports equipment such as baseball bats and similar are now allowed. I think it is about time the rules were more sensibly applied. We were boarding a plane in Brisbane when the woman checking bags saw a 3 inch pair of nail scissors in my wife’s bag and confiscated them. I argued with her to no avail. I wanted to know how two grey haired oldies were going to take over a 747 full of passengers with a pair of nail scissors. Yet if the scissors had rounded ends instead of points it would have been all right.
I don’t object to the security but I think it should be applied with a bit of common sense.
Why do they even bother scheduling Test Cricket in Dunedin? The rain teams down yet again…
And Dime I agree 100% re Tendulkar. He has simply hung on too long….
That new boy Pujara can bat though.
As an aside if you are looking for the best batsman in Test Cricket then Ali Cook would be breathing down Amla’s neck- $4.50 to top score is great money. (That’s if it ever stops raining in that old bloody dump Dunedin)
Thanks for that – a classic. I will now always think of Norman as waving his fwag at passing planes while he points at the landing strip and a sign that says: “Green Economy here”.
“A green economy”…shit it could happen here…across the ditch a leading Australian business group warns Australia is heading into along term budget crisis…this despite a record mining boom.
…billions wasted on “pet projects” that have done nothing to lift the living standard,in fact, probably the opposite…now Labor is left with empty books and eyeing the super…
Actual Passport Letter received by the UK Passport Office.
Dear Sirs,
I’m in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe how is it that Sky Television has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a bleeding satellite dish from them back in 1988, and yet, the Government is still asking me where I was bloody born and on what date.
Do you guys do this by hand?
My birth date you have on my pension book. It’s on all the income tax forms I’ve filed for the past 30 years. It is on my National Health card. My driving licence. My car insurance.
On the last eight damn passports I’ve had.
It’s on all those stupid customs declaration forms I’ve had to fill out before being allowed off the plane over the last 30 years.
All those insufferable census forms.
Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother’s name is Mary Anne, my father’s name is Robert and I’d be absolutely astounded if that WOULD ever change between now and when I die!!
I apologise, I’m really pissed off this morning. Between you an’ me, I’ve had enough of this bullshit!
You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my bleeding address!!
What is going on? Do you have a gang of neanderthal arseholes workin’ there?
Look at my damn picture.
Do I look like Bin Laden?
I don’t want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for shit sakes. I just want to go and park my arse on some sandy beach somewhere.
And would someone please tell me, why would you give a shit whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days?
If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, you’d be the last fucking people I’d want to tell!
Well, I have to go now, ’cause I have to go to the other end of the poxy city to get another fucking copy of my birth certificate, to the tune of £30.
Would it be so complicated to have all the services in the same spot to assist in the issuance of a new passport the same day?
Nooooooooooooo, that’d be too damn easy and maybe make sense.
You’d rather have us running all over the fuckin’ place like chickens with our heads cut off, then WE have to find some arsehole to confirm that it’s really me on the damn picture – you know, the one where we’re not allowed to smile?! (bureaucratic fuckin’ morons)
Hey, do you know why we couldn’t smile if we wanted to? Because we’re totally pissed off!
Signed
An Irate Citizen
P.S. Remember what I said above about the picture and getting someone to confirm that it’s me?
Well, my family has been in this country since 1776 …
I have served in the military for something over 30 years and have had full security clearances over 25 of those years enabling me to undertake highly secretive missions all over the world.
However, I have to get someone ‘important’ to verify who I am – you know, someone like my doctor
WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN FRIGGIN` PAKISTAN
I recall that someone at The Standard – no doubt uncharitably – described your YourNZ site as YawnNZ. But it’s fair to say that you do spend an inordinate amount of time blogging. I’m curious – do you work or have you retired (so to speak)? Why are you so keen to be a political blogger?
Are employment numbers due out this week?
Looks whats happened. The govt. is rushing us in a half hearted manner to try to fix youth unemployment.
Barely a pass Stephen. Wen need proper youth rates graduated 6 monthly. form 16 to 20 just like we used to have when we had good employmwent and young people learning succeding in employment.
They are minimums but they do work.
Apprentice initiative start date brought forward
Wednesday, 6, Mar, 2013 1:26PM
The Government is bringing the start date forward for its new apprenticeship initiative.
New subsidies for apprentices, such as payments towards tools and off job costs, had been due to be introduced next month.
However Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says the scheme will commence immediately.
He says the early start is due to feedback from apprentices and employers who have been keen for the initiative to start.
German troops not welcome by their Turkish allies. Yet Germany has millions of Turks ,no longer “guests” but full citizens.
And dumb arse progressives like Cameron and Obama want full EU membership for the newly Islamic “secular” Turkey.
“With a modest capital expenditure we are adding 700,000 tonnes of additional production, which is expected to create significant value for shareholders. This added production also enhances our reliable and quality supply capability to our customers in the fast-growing Asian markets.
“With the new natural gas supply agreement, combined with the other secured natural gas supply agreements, we now have arrangements in place to underpin production at our three-plant operation in New Zealand for years to come,” he said.

Ain’t it great. Mined direct from the ground. Earth your arses out greenies.
P.S. for ya greenies don’t forget to NOT take advantage if our new found income. Continue to live poor, and don’t bother with claiming benefits.
Oh and a bit more good news. The yanks want our blood!
Well our cattle blood to be precise.
The blood from the 2.4 million bulls and cows slaughtered in New Zealand each year is being eyed by an American company for medical and dietary use.
Iowa-based Proliant says it wants to take “every last drop” of cattle blood produced by New Zealand’s biggest meat company Silver Fern Farms and then move on to the cattle slaughtered by other companies.
Proliant chief executive Steve Welch said a deal with Silver Fern would initially add $6 million a year to the value of blood that currently had little worth, a sum that could increase to $20m over time.
Government support partner Peter Dunne has sent a “time bomb warning” to Prime Minister John Key, saying his “cut through” approach over the SkyCity convention centre and Hobbit law changes risks becoming “a major problem”.
The United Future Leader wrote that the Government’s approach to business where it liked to “cut through quickly and resolve issues before they get too bogged down in red tape” was welcome “after years of stultification and wariness under successive previous governments”.
Mr Dunne said much of that approach was down to Mr Key “who is focused on achieving things and making a difference”.
But (now here comes what I truly think), the SkyCity convention centre deal and the deal done with Warner Bros over the Hobbit films showed “there is a danger that the cut through which has been one of the government’s hallmarks will become a major problem for it”.
Really, WHY. Lets get stuff done. That was what appealed about Key and its taken 5 years to come to the fore. Lets get a move along and Key can contest Dunnies nice little safe seat in his kingdom with his nice bunch of Govt. servants as voters. They matter not at all. The rest of us want a go.
Happened to capture a photo of said possum head recently. Sitting on a fence as one would expect and suffering a bad case of rigour mortis as well. Quite appropriate really.
instead of ‘youth unemployment’ we might as well just say… the young dumb dumb problem, no?
Well that may apply to you. That I could maybe understand.
Youth are those under 20. Always have been and always will be. Even if wankers want to cahnge things to suit the union movement in their attempts to destroy young people and their aspirations and their genuine growth from early teens to fully fledged adult.
P.S. If you don’t understand that simply isn’t my fault. Its yours cause you are too dumb as you pointed out.
Don’t expect me to even try to educate you.
I’m an old white dumb dumb that went straight through the primary and secondary education system like bad diarrhoea.
I did get an accounting degree from Victoria… which is an expensive piece of paper which effectively says that one group of people are happy to signal to everyone else that you are officially not a complete and utter retarded fuckbrain. I even got some ‘B’s!!
Won’t likely ever earn me one dollar from a related job but anyway….
It did teach me how to read… which in turn enabled to me to learn about weight-loss.. and finally it all came together like the pressure of a faultline being released as energy… and I lost around 18kg in three months. You could call that a very very pricey weight-loss programme.
Now I just sit around bitterly resenting people that make upwards of twice what I’m worth per hour… hahaha

Piss poor effort and completely wrong. Still its probably your own portrait I suspect. Abroken down Vic student with a clapped out degree and an inability to earm much and even less understanding of people and their aspirations dumb or otherwise. Rare to find wealthy accountants.
The police recently busted a man selling ‘ secret formula’
tablets he claimed gave eternal youth. When going through
their files they noticed it was the fifth time he was caught
for committing this same criminal medical fraud.
He had earlier been arrested for the same thing in 1794,
1856, 1928 and 1983.
One of the big costs for both the individual and society is the loss of skills – or the failure to gain skills – due to unemployment.
With the annual average unemployment rate of 15-19 year olds over 25% (and 20-24 year olds facing an unemployment rate of over 13%) there is a significant group of young people who are unable to build up their human capital at present, due to the lack of available work.
This reduces their future ability to earn income and to join in as an active member of society.
Given that both of the issues of long-term unemployment and youth unemployment are problems of matching and gaining skills, as a society it may well make sense to help support people when finding their way into work.
Thanks to whoever suggested the Runmeter app for monitoring runs/walks. I have knocked 5 minutes off my 5 km run (33 mins down to 28 – still a bit weak I know) just from competing with myself. I am at 87 kgs looking to get down to around 84-85.
Not quite up to standard of DPF’s achievements but it helps having a goal in mind.
Any exercise experts able tot tell what is the next step from here? Either run the same distance in a shorter time, or increase the distance? TBH neither is very appealing LOL
SOUTH Australia is sitting on oil potentially worth more than $20 trillion, independent reports claim – enough to turn Australia into a self-sufficient fuel producer.
Brisbane company Linc Energy yesterday released two reports, based on drilling and seismic exploration, estimating the amount of oil in the as yet untapped Arckaringa Basin surrounding Coober Pedy ranging from 3.5 billion to 233 billion barrels of oil.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week the US could pass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest oil producer this year, thanks to the shale oil explosion.
Shale oil extraction involves using new technologies to drill vertically and then horizontally for distances of more than one kilometre through shale rocks that contain oil.
Only 30 per cent of year 12 students who are currently accepted into teacher education courses would make the cut under wide-ranging reforms announced by the state government.
The measures would eliminate an estimated 800 to 1000 HSC graduates from teaching degrees each year, according to the president of the NSW Board of Studies, Tom Alegounarias.
It would also be easier to sack underperforming teachers, who would then be de-registered.

There have been many enormous finds recently of this wonderful organic product. NZ could possibly be self sufficient, in oil, if we used what is sitting under our feet. Unfortunately NZ is infested with ignorant primitivists who want us to live in a pre industrial culture and oppose the use of this natural and sustainable resource.
Either run the same distance in a shorter time, or increase the distance? TBH neither is very appealing LOL
Hodor, both. I am getting back into running myself right now. I believe in listening to your body and not over training. At the moment I am only doing about 5km, but on steep hills. Then it will go to about 10km on hills. Then 20km, on hills. This usually takes me about 6 weeks.
You may be surprised how quickly you improve, depending on your starting fitness. Taking 5 minutes off a 5km is good progress and looks promising. Once you reach a certain level it becomes much more enjoyable. Stick with it and find a balance between pushing yourself and over doing it. The rewards are well worth it.
Yes kea a switch to nuclear and renewable generation is so last century unlike coal and oil energy which was only developed when?
We have enough lignite to run on hydrocarbons for energy in New Zealand for the next 250years.
The cost of oil is such that formally uneconomic extraction methods like tar sands and shale are being exploited.Making the known resource expand considerable. Fracking has also opened up huge resources of gas and condensate.
Unfortunately for your drill and burn ethos it will not continue much more into the future.
I really don’t like running much so hopefully the enjoyment level increases! I had a horrible feeling the answer to my question was “both”. Will keep plugging away and post again re progress in a couple of weeks.
I’ve been running 10kms a day for the last 4-5 months for weight loss. Before that I ran 5kms per day for a month or two. I’ve run on and off since Nov 2005. Around 6 000 recorded kms now.
It will always be hard work. And sort of awkward and uncomfortable. But I’ve found that in accordance with what I read would happen, it gets easier the more you do it.
Eg: When I changed to 10kms per day from 5kms…. I couldn’t run the whole thing in a row day after day. I set a time limit of 60 minutes and that leaves time to walk toward the end (or anywhere) as an option. (I’d usually get to around 7-8km mark and walk using up the time limit. My thinking was ‘I’ve got to do this every fucking day… I’m saving energy if I can’)
Now… I never need to walk a 10km run. Or a 20km run. Certainly didn’t start off like that, yeah?
Because of an ice cream weakness I was running 10kms and then adding 5km laps later on for a couple of days this week and running for distance and taking it easy. Today I ran only 10kms and staying away from (trying to anyway) ice cream and as can happen you have a quick gallop instead of a plodathon and I stopped the watch at an honest effort time of 46’15″, which included a ‘pit stop’ at halfway and a ‘who cares’ first lap.
By the way… when I’m plodding along at 10.5km/h… I think about the quicker run times and think to myself ‘how the fuck and why do you ever bother doing that?’ I have no idea…. because I can?
Either run the same distance in a shorter time, or increase the distance? TBH neither is very appealing LOL
Increase the distance. It does not matter how long it takes you either in terms of total calories burnt.
Distance. Distance. Distance.
10kms walked or run = same amount of calories burnt.
If you run 10kms… it takes less time to burn the same amount of calories than walking. So running is simply more time efficient.
Diet is the bigger weapon out of diet and exercise. Eat less calories to have to burn off to start off with. Use the online daily calorie intake calculators eg http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm. Eat the amount given for you or less if you can… and all of the exercise calories will be fat burning.
I don’t want to scare you but the other day I skipped breakfast, ran 10kms… got a reading of 77.8kg. When I went to bed I weighed 84.9kg. No shit mate. Have fun deciphering all your weight readings… hehehehe

Kea, thanks for tips and the encouragement.
I really don’t like running much
I used to hate it with a passion. I used to reckon runners were homos and had no mates ! I am reminded how much it sucks now, starting from scratch again. I used to do 10km in 34 minutes. Right now I my 5km time is closer to that. Very humbling. I love running off road as it keeps it interesting, even when I am slow. Hills are really just a mind game and are great training. You will hate them deeply at first, but after that, anything feels good Plus you get to go down hill on a runners high (or feeling like you want to puke)
I will say that losing weight makes a huge difference. Fat is just more weight to carry.
Left Right and Centre, that is a lot of running (everyday). I tried running just most days a few months back. I made terrible progress and thought it may be age finally catching up. When I went to my usual 2 or 3 times a week, my progress increased again. I reckon you may be over doing it, but what ever works for you is ok. It also depends on what you want out of it. The main thing is you are doing it and you must have developed a fair amount of self discipline at the same time. Not everyone can.
“10kms walked or run = same amount of calories burnt.”
Untrue
if you walk 10kms you expend a lot more calories than running as you get the benefit of the calories expended based on the extra time to walk vs run.
However, running tends to increase the metabolism a lot more than walking so this tends to mean running the same distance causes a larger calorific increase than just walking as the metabolism is raised for a significant time after running plus …..
running requires more muscle than walking and tends to increase muscle mass – increased muscle mass uses more calories.
There is fairly decent research that shows high intensity exercise has a much large effect on calorific usage than one might normally expect.
The concept of fat burning exercise is bollocks – the majority of research backs this
@Kea
in my thin and young days I could do sub 33 min 10 km – anything under 35 min is quick if you are not a professional
10kms walked or run = same amount of calories burnt.
Diet is the bigger weapon out of diet and exercise.
Yes they say walking it or running it, same calories. However, I wonder about the difference in raising the metabolic rate. A good run really amps you up and may continue to burn calories long after you finish. Just wondering, I might research that and see if its the case.
From experience I agree and reckon diet is the bigger of the two. Though if you do really big kms you can probably eat pretty much what you like. However those guys are usually too busy running to sit around eating.
As for weight… when running in really hot conditions for around 2 hours, I would lose around 3kg. I used to always drink water until my pee was clear before I did those runs. I would also give my body time to recover.
There is fairly decent research that shows high intensity exercise has a much large effect on calorific usage than one might normally expect.
slijmbal, I have seen some very interesting research around high intensity exercise. I wish I could find the doco on you tube, done by British researchers. They got amazing results with extremely brief bursts of high intensity. I am talking just a few minutes a week. I will look for doco tomorrow if I remember and post it on KB.

“Call for sanity after IRD win”

We still treat South Africans and Pomps as “one of us”.
and
Comes down to who we think “ourselves” is, and whether we acknowledge it changes over time.

Dear Sirs,
I’m in the process of renewing my passport, and still cannot believe how is it that Sky Television has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a bleeding satellite dish from them back in 1988, and yet, the Government is still asking me where I was bloody born and on what date.

Possum head sitting on the fence still.

Vote:We have enough lignite to run on hydrocarbons for energy in New Zealand for the next 250years.
The cost of oil is such that formally uneconomic extraction methods like tar sands and shale are being exploited.Making the known resource expand considerable. Fracking has also opened up huge resources of gas and condensate.
Unfortunately for your drill and burn ethos it will not continue much more into the future.

Kea, thanks for tips and the encouragement.

You will hate them deeply at first, but after that, anything feels good
Plus you get to go down hill on a runners high (or feeling like you want to puke)

The concept of fat burning exercise is bollocks – the majority of research backs this
@Kea
in my thin and young days I could do sub 33 min 10 km – anything under 35 min is quick if you are not a professional
Vote:March 6th, 2013 at 11:28 pm
Yes they say walking it or running it, same calories. However, I wonder about the difference in raising the metabolic rate. A good run really amps you up and may continue to burn calories long after you finish. Just wondering, I might research that and see if its the case.
From experience I agree and reckon diet is the bigger of the two. Though if you do really big kms you can probably eat pretty much what you like. However those guys are usually too busy running to sit around eating.
As for weight… when running in really hot conditions for around 2 hours, I would lose around 3kg. I used to always drink water until my pee was clear before I did those runs. I would also give my body time to recover.

slijmbal, I have seen some very interesting research around high intensity exercise. I wish I could find the doco on you tube, done by British researchers. They got amazing results with extremely brief bursts of high intensity. I am talking just a few minutes a week. I will look for doco tomorrow if I remember and post it on KB.
