Rodney Hide on Key and the GCSB dramas:

The Prime Minister in the moment forgot about a call he had made months previously. Big deal. Prime Ministers shoulder-tap people for jobs all the time. The correct process was followed once Fletcher applied. And no one is questioning Fletcher’s suitability for the job.

Key’s opponents are declaring cronyism, lying, cover-up and incompetence. They have landed a punch and keep on hitting. The media are reporting the stoush and appear not to accept the PM’s assurances that he had simply forgotten about the call. They see his momentary memory lapse as all too convenient.

So Key has declared he won’t in the future be so casual. He will check and recheck before giving answers.

He will sacrifice immediacy for accuracy. It’s the way it has always been with politicians and it’s a little sad. I liked it that Key answered on the spot and didn’t weigh and calculate his answers for their political effect.

It felt like we were getting the real deal. Key was different from other politicians. Well, not any more. The PM is promising to be more cagey. I think it’s the country’s loss.

So the media may get a more cagey Key and have already grizzled about it, but they can blame themselves (actually they won’t, but they should).

And the opposition may get a cagier Key in question time, but they persistently grizzle anyway.

In reality this shouldn’t stop a lot of Key’s on-the-spot responses, he’s well informed about a lot of things, but he should take more care with gotcha questions from both media and opposition MPs.

Parliament appears to be on the verge of making a decision on an issue that was never put to electors, which now appears to have minority support and which, in the view of many, will do major and lasting social harm.
Wake up Parliament!

Reg – the privacy commissioner suggested that anyone can ask if they have been spied on, but I don’t know if GCSB are required to tell them, they are a secret organisation. And privacy would presumably prevent them from making anything public.

If anyone did find out they had been one of the 85 it would be up to them to make it public, but I think it’s highly unlikely anywhere near all of the 85 would do that.

“We are finding the same rises in temperature in the high mountains, showing it is not linked to conglomerations. This is much more than the overall average change in the planet of around 0.75C. It is true that the average is worked out including the water covering the Earth, and of course the sea warms up less than the continents, but it is still very high.

“We are also seeing less snow in lower lying areas of under 1,000m. Around 40% less over the last 50 years. At higher altitudes 2,000m and above there is no evolution. The level at which precipitation turns from snow to rain appears to have risen by 200m.”

“The indicators that the Alps are warming up is clear. These findings are worrying, very worrying – maybe not for right now but for the second half of the century.”

Victor Saunders, a British mountain guide who has lived in Chamonix for 15 years, said the Alpine landscape had changed during that time “without a shadow of doubt”.

“I have climbed glaciers in every continent including Antarctica and can say the glaciers have been shrinking rapidly over the last 10 years on every single one. It is clear the glaciers are in recession, though of course 15 years is a tiny time frame in geological terms.”

There has been much said about Arthur Allan Thomas over the years. At the beginning it was insulting, people demeaned him and his family’s intelligence – referring to them as ‘hillbillies’ and such. They were simple country folk – the sort of stuff NZ was built on. They trusted each other, their neighbours and the police. The sort of family whose kitchen table was always surrounded by family, friends, and basically anyone in need of a chat and a friend. But many of ‘sophisticated’ NZ scoffed at the family – deciding that Thomas, a simple country boy must be guilty because he didn’t seem to have the right words to ‘sound innocent’.

Of course that changed, and most now believe in his innocence.
This article demonstrates just part of how that family and their friends went about proving their boy was innocent – something they shouldn’t have had to do – the cost was theirs – AAT was compensated – the family and those that went to great expense never were.

All people that benefit from the proceeds of crime (regardless of the crime) should be made to part with those ‘profits’ which should then be redistributed to the victim/s.

Weather is not climate.

Edoardo Cremonese, a climate change scientist with the Environmental Protection Agency of Aosta Valley, on the Italian side of the Alps, admitted that with fresh snow dusting the region it might not seem a good time to talk about global warming.

“People do not understand climate change; they think it means weather, but climate change is not about the amount of snow falling.”

“What we have seen is that the Alps and Alaska are the areas most greatly impacted in terms of temperature rises. In these areas we have seen a rise of between 1.8C and 2.5C, double the observed global rate.

For those who are sceptical about climate change, I would say this is not speculation, this is fact. The question we as scientists have to establish is why this is happening in the Alps in particular.”

He said: “The impact of global warming on the Alps will be certainly felt by 2050, maybe 2040 according to climate models, so we are talking about maybe 20-30 years. Politicians need to take decisions now to face the challenges; 75% of the people I know [in the Alps] work in tourism and this will be a great challenge.

This is no time to be sceptical: it is everyone’s future we are talking about.”

I disagree, healthy skepticism is a good thing. But skepticism is very different to intransigence.

It’s generaly accepted by scientists that the earth is about 4,650,000,000yrs old.

To put this in perspective Pete, we will condense the life of earth into just 1 year.

So on Jan 1st :

The big bang would have created earth – right about midnight.

Now let’s go to Dec 31st Pete. Virtualy a whole year later – where we actually are now Pete.

About 15 minutes to midnight would have seen the end of the last Ice Age.

And at about 15 sec to midnight would have seen the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.

It would then appear Pete that climate ‘indications’ that you have just listed – happened when you got out of bed this morning -still half asleep- put your feet on the floor – and said “it’s a bit warmer this morning than yesterday”. 😎

We should be worried about that, not about the world’s climate doing what it’s been doing on its own for eons

Harriet – I agree, but I don’t know what your point is.

A hundred years is a very small timeframe in relation to the age of the earth. But it’s possible for significant changes over a hundred years, and those changes potentially could have a major effect on a severely overpopulated planet.

I was only joking Pete, I read it yesterday. Anyway, I care as much about the enviroment as the next person. But I’ve read that the worlds population will return back to where it is now in just 70 yrs. 2080.
If we look at what man has achieved in just the last 100yrs, with technological advancements to feed and supply the worlds population with higher voloumes of food per acre, more products produced with less energy consumption ect and all this from capitalism: supply and demand and the mechanism of pricing. Then I’ll think we will be just fine.

In The Herald Damien Grant praises the Psychotic Substances Bill, and like others he wonders if it could be extended to existing drugs like heroin and Cannabis:

Like most opiates, heroin is highly addictive, with a number of negative long-term effects, so it may not pass the low risk of harm criteria, but why should it be excluded automatically? Likewise, cannabis cannot be licensed yet chemical substitutes for it can be.

Dunne’s bill is a small step on a long road that may lead to a more rational way of dealing with the human desire to get high.

When the bill was introduced to Parliament on Tuesday Iain Lees-Galloway and Kevin Hague also raised the possibility of this Bill leading to re-addressing existing drugs.

I asked Dunne about this and he didn’t rule it out but suggested there were high hurdles.

I do not think there is any prospect of the psychoactive substances regime being extended to all drugs, either under this government, or in the foreseeable future. It is simply too premature to make that call – before the legislation has even been passed, let alone implemented or evaluated.

In principle, I am not averse to the regime being extended in the future. But people should be wary of asking for something they might get!

There is, for example, no way under the regime in the bill that a substance like cannabis, let alone harder drugs, would ever meet the “low risk” test and thus be allowed on the market. The pharmacological and toxological evidence of the risk they pose is simply too overwhelming!

The Psychoactive Substances Bill is a major step forward in dealing with the introduction of rapidly changing synthetic drugs.

It may lead to re-evaluating how we deal with drugs currently covered by other laws, like cannabis and heroin, but it doesn’t look like happening any time soon, and not without overcoming major issues.

What rubbish.

Drug usage amongst individuals is at it’s peak in their mid 20’s. And that’s only for those who regulary use drugs. For those who ‘try’ drugs it is at about 20yrs old.

So much then for drugs being a regular ‘human desire’.

And looking at the bell curve on drugs usage proves this further:

Policy shouldn’t be based on the ‘desire’ of a couple of hundred old hippies who want to score some pot once or twice a year. Mainly for memories sake.

Nor should policy be based on a few hundred 12 yld kids who are neglected and have a misunderstanding of what they really ‘desire’.

if not, the headline is worth watching Faber vs Jorgensen.

also Kelvin Gastelum vs. Uriah Hall. Uriah Hall is amazing to watch. his striking is insane.. but we havent seen him face a high levels wrestler yet.

there are also a couple of chicks fighting which is kinda funny. would be better if they were naked and fighting in jelly but ah well

It’s obvious you are excluding the socially acceptable drugs such as kava and alcohol, both of which are examples that have very high and regular usage through many different age groups.

The west doesn’t have a problem with “overpopulation”. Our pops are declining.

Our problem is politicians allowing unrestrained immigration from overpopulated countries.From populations that don’t share our culture or values.

A policy that has never and will never be put to the electorate of said western countries.

If you really wanted a privatized power scheme that would work, you would be pro-solar. Once we get to the stage where additional generating capacity can be installed at little cost and almost instantly in individual homes and any excess sold back to the grid, the market for power will function far more efficiently than it currently does (where we have to build massive generating stations that require years of planning and construction). It makes sense to subsidise development in solar with that end goal in mind.

That people on a supposedly free market supporting blog are against the most promising scheme (both technologically and politically) for providing a free market in electricity speaks volumes.

I am pleased to hear the news that alternative power sources, like solar, are finally economical. We can immediately cut the punitive taxes on other forms of energy and cease the subsidies for windfarms and all other forms of “alternative energy”

I can not see why tax payers should be subsidising such a wonderfully profitable and economical business as solar energy…. Yeah right !

Unfortunately the power network will probably be destabilised when too much solar energy is injected back into the network. The networks are designed to support transmission of power from large power stations to the consumer. They haven’t been designed to support power being pushed back into the network. Australia already has issues with this in some locations with voltages rising too high because of solar installations. So, no free ride there.

Radio New Zealand’s religious programme on a Sunday is quite bizarre.

Today (14 April) the subject is BuJews! Dinkum, what they call themselves. Today, with an interview with a New Zealand BuJew, but he’s spending more time talking about Judaism than about Buddhism. It’s pronounced Boo-Jew.

These are Jewish people who have adopted the Buddhist faith, and this is their name.

Raises the question of names for other Buddhist converts from Christianity.Perhaps BuDools for Catholics, Bangles for Anglicans, Buthies for Lutherans, Methodhhists, Buptists (Baptists), Bumons (Mormons), Buthren, Bukers (Quakers), Buventists (Seventh Day Adventists), Butana (Ratana), Bundis (Hindus), Buslims (Muslims),Buhovies (Jehovah’s Witnesses). Plus Butheists (atheists) an Bugnostics (agnostics).

Organisers of Radio NZ Labour Programme’s Sunday religious slot can mark up their diaries and calendars for a year.

The programme (Spiritual Outlook) has just finished and the interviewee said (dinkum) that he had heard another term used for Jewish converts to Buddhism — Jewbu’s (pronounced Jew-boos). So perhaps Doolboos for ex-Catholic Buddhists, and An-goos for ex Anglican Buddhists?

I don’t think you need to worry that we actually believe the garbage spouted by the MSM or Iran Reid. I stopped worrying about time machines back when my comics were confiscated at boarding school. 🙂

Besides we know that there’s no chance of a re-engineered Tardis hitting the assembly lines in Tehran….they’d never slip it past Allah & the Imams. The concept could bugger the sales of magic carpets.

David Shearer is today signalling Labour’s intention to make changes to the electricity sector to stem the relentless rise in power bills and to ease future pressure on prices from foreign investors looking to boost profits at the expense of consumers.

“Over the past 15 years, the annual average household power bill has gone up by almost $770, even after inflation is taken out. Prices in New Zealand are rising faster than in our major competitor countries.

“I’ve spoken to Kiwis who are scrimping on heating their houses and are afraid to turn their electric blankets on because they simply can’t afford their power bills. That’s just wrong.

“The pressure on prices will only get worse as this Government sells our power companies to mostly foreign and corporate buyers. Those investors will want to push prices up even more to boost their returns.

“That’s not fair. That’s why Labour will take action.

“We are signalling that the future Labour Government will make changes to the sector so that New Zealanders considering purchasing shares in Mighty River Power, which go on sale tomorrow, are aware of that before investing.

“The Mighty River Power offer document already includes regulatory risk. But while we will detail our proposed changes in the near future, we believe it is responsible to signal our intentions now,” said David Shearer.
