European views on Europe

This table is from Stats Chat.

So every country thinks Germans are the most trustworthy, except the Greece who think they are!

For least trustworthy, the British choose the French (fair enough), three countries choose Greece, Italy chooses itself (which is hilarious but perceptive) and Greece and Poland choose Germany. Maybe due to invasions but how do Poles say Germany is both most and least?

France and Germany are the only two countries chosen for most arrogant (also fair enough) while interestingly citizens of each country choose themselves as most compassionate – which suggest we see compassion locally.

So who do we trust? … Try Oz/UK/US /China and Fiji … South Islanders? … for starters.

The profligate Greeks are as trustworthy as comrade Norman.

I like how the French see themselves as both the most arrogant and the least arrogant. LOL

And Spain and the Czech Republic are the only countries not to choose themselves as least arrogant. The Spaniards chose Italy (! WTF?), and the Czechs chose their neighbours, the Slovaks. Interesting.

I wonder how the Commonwealth nations would fare in a similar survey amongst Commonwealth nations.

Yay, how the English love to hate the French. Of course the French can be arrogant. France is one of the most agreeable places on Earth, at least it was until colonised by Muslims. The English are no better at keeping their country for themselves, but the English are tolerant to stupidity. And where would New Zealanders fit in? Guilt-ridden, gauche, naive, ignorant …

Rings true somehow. I’ve worked with several poms… none of them could stand the French.

We don’t know how lucky we are, living on an island in the ocean with our nearest neighbours a friendly nation of other white English emigres just like ourselves.

It must develop a whole different state of mind, living in a country bordering other countries that have been at war with yours over and over again..?

The Greeks have been untrustworthy in a sense by promising to restrain spending and not actually doing it. But this was completely predictable based on the incentives put before them. You could rely on them doing exactly what they have done.

The lesson for Germany is this: why pay everybody else’s bills for them if you are still going to be seen as the least compassionate country?

And fcuk, the Greeks invented the “Captain and Officers first” procedure for abandoning a sinking passenger ship.

You must know you’re scum if even THOSE people rate you as untrustworthy :-)

No surprises there. I’ve seen plenty of people criticise a certain organisation as uncaring, who I know for a fact are one of the few organisations still doing the good work people claim they should be doing. I.e. unless you’re directly involved, you’re unlikely to be aware of small acts of charity that people do.

I would guess that it’s due to invasions. If Russia was added to the list of countries to choose from, there would be a more accurate result. In my wider family, there are people who don’t think too badly of the Germans, but cannot stand and would not trust Russia. A lot of these people are gulag survivors.

There doesn’t seem to be much consensus of Who are the most compassionate. Perhaps New Zealand could hold a similar poll among…New Zealander, Maori, Pacific Islander, Moslem, Chinese, Other.
