Friday Photo: 24 May

Today’s pic is of the NZ , an endangered shore found on some beaches around NZ.  They’re also pretty timid, so getting close enough to take pictures requires a great deal of patience and care.  I appreciate they’re not the most spectacular of our native species, but watching them still appeals.  The shells on the beach give some sense of size-perspective

    Nice.

Do you autofocus for shots like this, or rely on your own deft hand?

PS: and holy brown vignetting, Spiderman!

Last year saw a Dotterel on the beach margins at Castlepoint in the Wairarapa.
Apparently a few have decided to take up residence in the area.
Great pose you captured him/her in, Chtnoniid.

Thanks- I usually switch back and forth between manual and auto. Auto is usually faster to respond, manual is better for composition. I’m not sure which this is.

The vignette is from some weeds I was using as partial cover. This shot is from fully prone position to get the eye-level perspective (and appear less threatening).

Thanks- the species does seem to be doing better- I’ve seen them (in small numbers) in a few locations now.

I took youngest on a hike and we ended up at this beach with dotterels. Spent some time watching them forage and interact through binoculars- it was a very peaceful and pleasant time. And that helped when I returned later with the cameras.

Incredibly, this thread appears to have become a safe haven from Little Red Risible. How counter intuitive is that?

Outstanding work spiderman. Now all you have to do is get Happy Feet on here.

What do they taste like crumbed with a squeeze of lemon juice?
