Oh dear

The Daily Telegraph reports:

Unamused Chinese censors have been at work to stop people sniggering over the new Beijing headquarters of the People’s Daily newspaper, which bears an unfortunate resemblance to part of the male anatomy.

A journalist friend commented that when studying journalism they were told sub editors needed dirty minds to ensure no possible double entendre got into print. She suggests  the same requirement should apply to architects!

Once all that scaffolding comes off the top it should look no worse than the Gherkin building in London.

If you google “Phallic building” some impressive erections come up, including the Ypsilanti, Michigan water tower:

Which you can even get a Sim City mod of:

Given the role of the People’s Newspaper as a medium for political propaganda, would that building be called a “portical erection” in Beijing?

Not lonely Dennis, a little chuffed really. It’s not every day someone constructs a building of life like proportions to oneself.

Unfortunately, the Peoples Daily building photo was immediately blocked by kneejerk fundie censorware due to its jutting, enormous, pendulous, erect, suggestive shape. Which is like (ahem) a protuberant banana with a cap on its apex :) ;)

@Nostalgia: “It’s not every day someone constructs a building of life like proportions to oneself.”

Logically and grammatically “oneself” means you, for it to apply to me you would need to say “himself”. I’m not sure whether you’re paying me a compliment or simply skiting…
