Why not Mayor?

June 27th, 2013 at 10:00 am by David Farrar

The Press reported:

is attempting a political comeback after 15 years.

The former three-term Christchurch mayor yesterday confirmed she would seek election as a Riccarton-Wigram ward councillor in October’s local body elections.

Speculation has mounted since Buck was this month spotted with mayoral hopeful Lianne Dalziel and former mayor Garry Moore, her successor in 1998, who hinted at a return too, but has since ruled himself out.

“I wasn’t confident I was going to [run], otherwise I would have just said,” Buck said.

“I vowed when I stepped down as mayor never to interfere in the council, and I haven’t. I never imagined I would go back into something like this because there are so many other things I love doing and get excited about.”

Sounding out others to potentially run was the catalyst to make a call on her own candidacy, Buck said.

She first ran for council in 1975, aged 19.

She has opted to try to depose either Helen Broughton or Jimmy Chen in Riccarton-Wigram, where she has lived for more than 15 years, rather than targeting a vacant seat.

I thought Vicki was a pretty good Mayor. So why doesn’t she stand for that job again? I think people would appreciate someone with a proven track record.

I thought she might go for the by-election. At least people in Fendalton will now realise that their elected Councillor there, Sally Buck, is actually not Vicki. This will freak Helen Broughton and Jimmy Chen, one of whom will lose to Vicki.

Maybe she doesn’t want to be Mayor again?

Or, maybe she wants to be Mayor, but thinks Lianne Dalziel would be better at it, and so she wants to serve as part of a council team with Dalziel at the head?

Or, maybe she wants to be Mayor, thinks she’d be better than Dalziel, but that she wouldn’t win the election and instead might split the vote and allow Parker to retain the position?

Doesn’t seem like much of a mystery to me.

That is almost certainly the position and she would be far, far better than Dalziel. She will also recognise how much it will help Dalziel to have experienced and solid support on the council.

Everybody knows that Lianne Dalziel is sleep walking to victory. So why bother?

Quite possibly – I don’t really know either of them. But in that case she either doesn’t want it as much as Dalziel does, or else figures it’s better to be a councillor in a (likely) Dalziel led council than a possible Mayor/more likely councillor in a Parker led council.

Which makes you think she must really believe Parker is a crappy Mayor!

I believe that she would prefer to be a councillor in a Dalziel Council rather than run the risk of splitting the vote. Its a shame as although Bob may not be popular he will be better than Dalziel.

She won’t need the money, but I seem to recall some involvement by her in a shady computor programme of a type that enriched several entrepreneurs during the Clarke era but which were of little value.

Yesterday’s people proposing yesterday’s failed theories for today’s challenges.

Dalzeil and Buck deserve each other – not sure ChCh has done enough wrong to deserve them though.
