I just read that too Martinh. Quite disgusting how Chris Finlayson and John Key have been saying the bill doesn’t allow this stuff and it is just scare mongering by Labour. Am I supposed to trust a man who tries to deceive us to not issue warrants for mass surveillance?

If people don’t need to defer gratification, work hard, etc., in order to achieve the status they desire, they’ll be less inclined to do those things. The greater the government subsidy, the greater the effect, and the more net harm produced.

I doubt Key lied deliberately. More likely he’s had a possibility pointed out to him he wasn’t aware of.

So he should sort it – via legislation, not just the pledge he made, that isn’t binding on him or future Prime Ministers.

Key should amend the bill.

More may be being made of Audrey Young’s article than is warranted. The PM’s office has issued another statement this morning.

The PM’s office provided a statement on his behalf from a spokesman yesterday in response to a technical question from Audrey Young.

Audrey had noted the PM said on Campbell Live on Wednesday night that under the cyber security function the GCSB would not be able to look at content of emails.

The PM was correct in this statement. Audrey Young was also correct to point out that nothing specific in the GCSB Bill prevented the GCSB from doing that.

While there is no individual provision in the Bill which specifically prevents that, that outcome is actually achieved by the effect of a combination of provisions (sections 8A, 15A and 15C).

A warrant must be issued for a particular function. In this case, it would be for cyber-security, which is protecting communications not spying on people or undertaking surveillance on them. There is a vast difference between these things.

And this is not in relation to surveillance, it is for cyber security – like Norton AV or AVG or whatever scanning emails for threats, not for information.

@ Pete George – I have little doubt that there will be an amendment moved if necessary when the Committee Stage of the debate resumes on Tuesday. And let’s bear in mind that it is Russel Norman who is accusing Key of lying, so people can draw their own conclusions as to his motivation for making that accusation.

I’m guessing that he is peeved that Key pulled the rug out from under the Bill’s opponents on Wednesday night, and this is pay-back. Given Norman’s propensity this year to resort to personal attacks even though Green Party values specifically prohibit them, this is par for the course for Dr Norman.

Key’s Norton statements on Campbell Live were widely criticised, but I think they make an important point.
Norton (or AVG or whatever) scans all my emails for threats, but does not look at the textual content at all beyond this, and has no need to store anything – unless it adds virus signatures to it’s threat database.

martinh – I have a fairly good idea what antivirus software does – and that’s more than protecting against viruses. It uses a number of techniques to detect threats – attack behaviours, virus signatures in files, suspicious changes etc etc. They scan content looking for potential danger but they totally ignore what I browse or what I write in my emails or posts.

Yeah, they could be feeding everything I do and type and read back to Prism, but they could also employ peeping toms looking in my window watching what I do and type. Neither of which would find out anything much more than seeing what I put out in the open online.

Yes, I usually would albeit cautiously. Paperwork is involved but it’s easy to get around that.

I have an employment agreement but trust is a far more imprtant aspect of my employment relationship – there’s a lot of things do based on trust.

Trust is an important part of business, politics, life. Without it we would live sad paranoid lives.

Thanks but it’s not my birthday! It’s the 36th anniversary of Elvis’ death. The fact that I know that and remember it, indicates that I am a older than 36 years. Actually I always remember the date because I had my daughter on the fifth anniversary of his death (hows that for a loyal fan!).

I’ve always loved Elvis’ earlier music. My older cousins forced it on me at a young age. I regard him as one of the world’s most talented artists, sadly, fame ruined his career.

As others have said, it is a good show. But not only that, it is a good family show. No matter what age you are, it is still enjoyable. Perhaps there is something to watching a “regular” family, without women being offended that men can be men, and children who generally seem to listen and respect their parents. Oh yeah, throw in respect for God (this family always displays towards the end of the show) and I guess you have a winner. Go figure.

Quite so Paulus. Given that the majority of his victims were Maori, I would doubt very much that he will ever get to spend time amongst the general prison population. I have been involved in prison ministry at the segregation unit at Whanganui Prison, and can honestly say that it is the most soul-destroying place I have ever been in. Parker will be in with sex offenders, narks, witness protection inmates and ex-police and corrections officers who are in prison. And even in the segregation unit there is a pecking order, and Parker will be regarded as the lowest of the low. It will be no holiday.

The Law and Order Committee has recommended that this obligation be clarified, carving out the network operators’ responsibility to decrypt where the network operator simply provided an “off the shelf” encryption product to a customer, to which the network operator does not have the private key.

In carrying out any interception on behalf of the surveillance agencies, the network operator is under an obligation to ensure that such interception is unobtrusive, does not unduly interfere with telecommunications and protects the privacy of telecommunications that are not authorised to be intercepted by the warrant.

Bloody ripper of a quake up this way. I’ve felt several aftershocks since, including a 5+ one out near Hunterville. Unlike the one a few weeks back that came from one direction, with this afternoon’s one, the shaking was all over the place. Mother Nature must have released a whole lotta energy.

I have never felt an earthquake in a car until that one. I was driving through a car park and thought either I had just gone over the speed bump at the crossing really badly, or something was wrong with one of my tires. Or maybe my whole wheel alignment as I’d just had it done. When parked and started walking towards the shops, there was a woman leaning against her car who was obviously freaked out, with two women making sure she was ok. The supermarket alarm was going off. I went to bank and all the staff were outside, saying that no one go in and they were waiting for their manager. I was like, has something happened? That’s when I found out my weird speed bump or wheel experience was actually an earthquake!

Was on L17 No. 25 The Terrace. Felt like some vertical as well as lateral, the biggest jolt seemed to last for only a few seconds but you could feel a few smaller ones leading up to it, then it was swaying for a few minutes afterward. BTW, on the Egypt killings. The reason Morsi was ousted was because he wasn’t sufficiently cooperative toward the West’s intentions for Syria. By “West” read “Israel” which always uses the West as its proxy. All the time. Like in Iraq. The key is understanding whether the West initiates it from say, London or whether such things are pure Tel Aviv initiatives which is a question that requires discernment but suffice to say this latest action from the Egyptian military really fits the thesis I’ve often pointed to which is that the next world war is going to be between the Muslims and the Christians/Jews. After all if you wanted to provoke a group of terrorists then what better action to take than this?

Of course most people will look at Obama’s condemnation and believe the West really isn’t behind this. Funnily enough those same people will be awfully angry and even puzzled, when the Muslim Brotherhood starts taking the very action this was designed to precipitate, in the months and years to come.

The theories both explain and predict reality joana. Just like the “theory” of relativity. Sadly no-one has offered me the minutes of the meetings where the West have discussed and decided their Syria strategy so I’ve had to infer it from their actions. I mean you’d think the media would have gotten hold of it and demonstrated their advanced thinking wouldn’t you. Perhaps they were too busy promoting unlimited Muslim immigration into the EU or gay marriage or some other thing which has such beneficial effects on society leading to the wondrous world we see around us, where the sheeple dance and play with no cares and there is no corruption at all and all the leaders are wise and always act in our very best interests, like hiring lots and lots of Al-Qa’ida mercs to take out inconvenient “dictatorships” like Libya who was rejecting the USD and only accepting gold for its oil so it had to be taken out and then the new govt setup a central reserve bank in it’s very first action even before the shots had died down. Aren’t we lucky that the West is now such friends with Al-Qa’ida that they can use them in such actions and then take our nasty ole Assad who was so wicked for so long that the media had been full of his abuses for simply decades before the bwave fweedom fighters finally decided to take him out. And don’t we hear lots and lots about the Libyan people are so vewy happy they’ve been libewated.

Wake up joana. Educate yourself.

Mark, I could give you life for manslaughter but that would be far too tough for a good
bloke such as yourself so I will reduce it down to 6 years 7 months.
Of course I could impose a non parole period but that would be unfair to a prince such
as yourself with hardly any previuos convictions.
You will thus be eligible to apply for parole at the earliest opportunity and I hope that
the parole board will take into account your guilty plea and give you credit for that.

And Mark, when you get out, if you pull this sort of shit again you may get an even stiffer
sentence so please be a good boy from now on.’
