How the world has changed

September 28th, 2013 at 1:38 pm by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

Breaking a third-of-a-century diplomatic freeze, President and new Iranian President have spoken by telephone and agreed to work toward resolving their deep dispute over Tehran’s nuclear efforts.

Rouhani, who earlier in the day called the United States a “great” nation, reached out to arrange the 15-minute call. The last direct conversation between the leaders of the two countries was in 1979 before the Iranian Revolution toppled the pro-US shah and brought Islamic militants to power.

Obama said the long break “underscores the deep mistrust between our countries, but it also indicates the prospect of moving beyond that difficult history.”

“While there will surely be important obstacles to moving forward, and success is by no means guaranteed, I believe we can reach a comprehensive solution,” Obama told reporters at the White House. ’s nuclear program has been a major concern not only to the United States but to other Middle Eastern nations especially Israel and to the world at large.

Rouhani, at a news conference in New York, linked the US and Iran as “great nations,” a remarkable reversal from the anti-American rhetoric of his predecessors, and he expressed hope that at the very least the two governments could stop the escalation of tensions.

It’s only a phone call, but it is a very encouraging sign that Iran sees benefits in rejoining the mainstream.

What is remarkable is not just the phone call between the two Presidents, but the fact that news of it broke on – from the Iranian President. We do live in a very different world to 1979!

I seriously doubt that Rouhani is the decision-maker on this issue in Iran. It is all those old boys who will decide what policy is.

So, in a nutshell, Martin Luther King Mandela Obama thinks he can save the world by ringing someone up?

This is naive in the extreme. We are attributing Western values and sentiments (‘having a chat’) on to Middle Eastern agendas where duplicity, committed deception, and ends-by-all-means are fully justified, often with religious justification. Have a chat to the Israelis who live there, Obama.

Obama has no idea what he’s doing whatsoever. He has no plan. He just responds to outside stimulus. It’s a knee-jerk reaction.
He probably thought it looked bad that Rouhani had initially snubbed him at the U.N General Assembly, so he decided to ring him up because it made good P.R.

It’s all to do with image for him.

There is no change in Iran’s policies.. just a change to a dope in the Whitehouse. Rahani was at an exterminate the Jews rally a day or so before chatting to Obama.

Obama made a red line policy on chemical weapons, got deserted by every ally except France, backed down, did a deal that gives immunity to Assad, sent weapons to the Free Syrian Army which promptly decamped to the al Qaida groups and is now in the process of allowing Iran to have its nuclear weapons..

Its fail on every front by the dumbest President in a 100 years.

Frankly it is difficult not to reach the assumption that he’s a bit naïve sometimes.

Iran must have forgiven America for sponsoring Saddam Hussein’s attack on Iran with extensive use of chemical weapons. And for its ongoing support for Israel, which is continuing to threaten even more American backed war against Iran to this day.

At least it is a step in right direction. I see the keyboard warriors are out in force today. I guess they see Afghanistan and Iraq as big success stories. It is alarming we allow these people to breed and vote.

This does show just how simple it is to manipulate those hopeful but naive souls who just want to believe ! In what way do we believe that the powers that run Iran, the council of elders so to speak, have changed their views ? Talk is, as they say, cheap, and the longer we just talk about it while the Iranians continue unobstructed with their nuclear weapons plans, the sooner we’ll have a nuclear Iran.

But sure, let’s listen to a load of platitudes so we can rationalize why we simply allow this to happen and pretend that we have a US president who has a clue.

Here are the facts as clear as day:

    1. He is a Muslim dedicated to the destruction of America from within. Muslims believe that lying and cheating is OK if it works and advances their cause…

    2. Since the day he was elected he has done everything in his power to harm the American people, to lower their standard of living through regulations and increased costs…

    3. He has wasted trillions of dollars so they cannot be used for the benefit of the country…

    4. He has broken every promise he has made except those to the Muslim Brotherhood of which he is a supporter…

    5. He has hated every good and decent thing about this country and his actions can be used as documentation of this fact.

    6. At every opportunity he has weakened the armed forces and the defenses of this country…

    7. He has betrayed every ally we have, and removed warning systems that would have protected us…

    8. He has used the willing liberal media to spread his lies and protect him from being captured…

    9. He has used minorities as protection against criticism even though he has robbed them on school choice and other things that would have helped them grow…

And yet no one will come out and just say it: he is our enemy and we should be fighting against him and everything he does, every day.

Obama is the worse thing that has ever happened to America and is a serious threat to world peace. But I do not think he is a Muslim. He supports the Muslim Brotherhood because they overthrow and weaken enemies of Israel. It also gives him an excuse to launch strikes against military targets in countries who are not supporters of the zionist state. The entire war on terror is really a proxy war destroying those who do not adore and grovel to Israel. He has done nothing to help any Muslim country but he has helped Israel.

What I love is how for the left and their voters, intentions are all that matter. It doesn’t matter that under Obama the poor and the black have suffered worse then they ever have. Here, it doesn’t matter that under Labour New Zealander’s got no increases in their after tax wages, no new housing was built except in the wrong place, the wrong size, to an awful quality with Labour’s $15billion unmanaged public housing fuckcircle, welfare was untouched like a cancer on our nation’s soul, they were awful on the environment, almost wiped out ACC, did wipe out the non-bank financial system and our ability to spend, and put the country into recession 2 years before the world changed. It doesn’t matter, because Labour cares. They think they’re going to walk in this time, but the good work National’s been doing is going to really kick in after the time lag build ups. National has the economy. National has the ideas. Labour just has bullshit & subterfuge and peripheral issues. We can’t let Cunliffe and labour con people with their hoaxes. On this thread, Obama is a lackwit. He speaks like what he is, a university law professor who never practiced. He can take this call from Iran and treat it as progress, but I imagine a number of people in Iran around the Green revolution would have appreciated a call a little earlier from the world’s greatest professional carer of them all.

The United States economy has been growing since 2010. One war has been ended with the end of the other in sight… and Osama of course is at the bottom of the ocean.

    JC has the beat!

    Kumbaya Obama…..a reactive, PR-whore, meathead.

Weihana , you really do lose the plot when speaking about darkies. Here you are holding up Obama as a bringer of peace.

Obama was against the withdrawal from Iraq. The draw down date was set by BUSH not Obama. He massively increased the Afghan war by 300% and it got worse by a similar amount. He has attacked (and is attacking) countries all over The Middle East and African. Drone strikes have gone from a handful under Bush to hundreds upon hundreds.

He should be handed over to those he has wronged, given a brief show trial and hung.

Obama was against the withdrawal from Iraq….

Interesting version of history there Kea.

The draw down date was set by BUSH not Obama.

    Yep, and?

He massively increased the Afghan war by 300% and it got worse by a similar amount.

I did just call this war pointless though in retrospect I’m not sure one can really fault George W for starting this war. Though perhaps he should have focused on Afghanistan rather than diverting to Iraq.

Here you are holding up Obama as a bringer of peace.

No, just contrasting what Obama inherited and what he has done with it. I realize you regard the US as a war mongering nation and there is some merit to that viewpoint, but I tend to believe that Pax Americana (as flawed as it is) is better than no Pax at all.

He should be handed over to those he has wronged, given a brief show trial and hung.

Cool it. Now some poor sap at the NSA has to waste his time trawling through your private communications to see what type of crazy person you are. ;)

milky, stop slobbering on Weihana !

Weihana’s simply expressed an opinion, or agreed with me. For example attempting to credit ending the Iraq war to Obama, then latter admitting it was Bush who set the withdrawal date.

Weihana seems to think that the Afghan war is a good idea. Because a Saudi led organisation, financed with Saudi money, led by a Saudi, organised an attack on America using Saudi operatives. Weihana thinks that justifies killing peasants in Afghanistan while being mates with the radical Saudi sharia law state. And the ONLY reason she is talking such shit is because of Obama’s skin colour. She is famous for her double standard based on skin tone.

President Rouhani’s dialogue with President Obama is encouraging and helpful in reducing tension in the Middle East especially between Iran and the US. Although the thaw in the relationship is in it’s early stages every effort should be made to open the lines of communication more widely in particular to the war in Syria which both parties are involved with in a defacto way.
Now that the US has withdrawn from it’s position of military intervention in Syria , Iran could reciprocate by withdrawing it’s support of militants which would further reduce tensions and reduce the humanitarian crisis occurring as refugee’s flee Syria in anticipation of an escalating level of military activity.
There is an opportunity for Iran to play a role in stabilising conflicts in the Middle East through moderate foreign policy and humanitarian aide to those countries devastated by civil war.
