Billboard in breach of the ASA

January 20th, 2014 at 1:00 pm by David Farrar

I blogged in October on this strange billboard which appeared in Wellington, with no identified sponsor or publisher.

It seems an advocacy advertisement is required to identify the advertiser, so the Advertising Standards Authority found it is breach of their rules.

What is also interesting is that neither the advertiser nor the billboard company responded to the complaint. It does make you wonder who the advertiser is. Most people are happy to stand by their opinions.

on the subject of billboards, why has Denise Krumm still got an election billboard on the Ellerslie-Panmure off ramp? Given it is there now (well last Saturday anyway) it must have been in breach of electoral law on local body election day.

The ASA has about as many teeth as gummy bear so if it was me who put this up I also wouldn’t care what they think.

If the advertiser or ‘site lessee’ (eg APN OGGI etc) do not wish to respond then the site lessor, in this case Chorus, has some answering to do. Perhaps someone could shoot a question to them at their next AGM.

MikeG, just went past it, yup, its still there. Mayeb she is waiting for the new election to be called when Slapper Pants Brown falls on his sword. And by that I dont mean in the Japanese real sense, or what he insisted his mate Bevan do, but what he should actually do if he had a single ounce of honour and respect for the electorate…

And I apologise for the mental imagery Ive just created :)

Denise’s billboard has become visible again because the advertisement that was covering it on election day has been taken down. No doubt a new advertisement will soon cover it again.

Curiouser and curiouser. I wonder how much it cost to put up? Can’t have been cheap. Peculiar to do just that and then not follow it up with some sort of campaign.
