My wish for 2014:

That retarded kiwis that can’t handle their liquor don’t give National any more reasons to restrict liquor laws any more than they already have.

Clearly many of the nanny statists in the Nats (which is most of them) are gagging for Prohibition-style liquor regulation, which seems to be being strongly supported by a Cameron Slater crusade against booze companies. For these people the drunk 9 year old is probably the best Christmas present they could have wished for going from some comments on the blogosphere.

Just got back from a few weeks in Europe and was amazed at how relaxed liquor laws were in some places. At some places you could buy a bottle of absinthe from the corner dairy. And without exception I felt much safer walking around at night in these places than I do in Auckland’s CBD…

Milne, Southee, Boult, Sodhi, Anderson….there is a bowling attack with considerable promise and variation…

Yes Longknives, Erakovic has to be the most over-hyped sportsperson in New Zealand and has been so for years.

Spoke to a guy who used to work at Radio Sport who told me that her inflated profile was the result of a combination of lazy journalism and radio and TV stations being spammed with user friendly press releases by Erakovic’s management.

What I hear on RNZ news this morning makes me very troubled …. which clueless clown[s] in the Government object to a few million being spent on keeping kiwi workers employed building a ferry yet wastes much more on a silly yacht race. The only ray of sun shine was Colin Craig’s spirited defence of a sensible child smacking law against an agressive and obviously biased interviewer … it is about the only sensible thing I have heard off him.

I do wonder why people agree to be interviewed by RNZ …. they must be masochists one and all.

God knows how he became the world’s No 1 ODI bowler at some stage. God knows how he played 15 or so tests also. I still lol at the days our test attack was Mills, Tuffey, Martin and Oram….truly hostile that was.

The Herald this morning runs an opinion piece in “10 Economic Steps for boosting NZ” apparently penned by one “Peter Davies” a “long time member of the Fabian Society” (one find that only by treading the footnote).

Now would this “Peter Davies” be the SAME “Peter Davies” who is still, apparently, married to one Helen Clark, former Labour Prime Minster of NZ, and now a UN tit sucker?

No matter, the garbage economics previously spouted by “Clark’s” Davies were little different from the socialist prescription advocated by/in the Herald this morning.

It is yet another example of the Herald’s growing left wing bias in their choice of columnists/writers.

It will be interesting how this year’s IPL goes vis a vis Kiwis being picked up in the auction. AFAIK no current Kiwis are attached to a team or were retained in the draft. Not that I particularly enjoy the lobotomised version of the game but always good when kiwis are playing.

In my opinion it is a fad that doesn’t seem that sustainable. You may as well ban actual bowling and just have someone lob underarms to batters and turn it into a 6 distance hitting competition. That’s the way its going. Soon the boundaries will be like the Women’s Ashes…(in saying that those boundaries are probably bigger than some of NZ’s postage stamps)…

It just reeks of money grabbing from no attention span Joe Blows to compensate for the declining interest in ODIs and tests…though NZC has only themselves to blame though with the lack of attendance and interest in ODIs and tests here. Why would you pay $40 for the privilege of watching the black caps pay shite, being able to buy 4 lion reds for $30, and having obese security guards bounce people from the ground for blowing up beach balls and singing on a hot summers day? I would still go because I am a sucker for punishment but a person or family with a more passing interest in cricket wouldn’t dream of it.

FFS, lower the price enough that the grounds fill up and stop having borderline IQ failed cops harassing people for having a good time.

T20 is absolute rubbish. A pure slogfest- You will never see a crisp cover drive or a cracking square cut in T20.. In fact, it is very rare to even see any kind of decent shot at all (fucking ‘ramp shots’ don’t count)..
I play club cricket in Auckland- most the guys I know will go to a Test or a ODI but nobody is interested in the ‘hit and giggle’ as it is so bloody ugly to watch (and a pure lottery)…
It is designed for ‘non cricket’ spectators who don’t understand the game.

If you’d actually read the paper, you’d have seen they ran two columns on this topic, one from Davies and one from Stephen Joyce.

It’s under the tag line “Today we present two views on how New Zealand can reach its economic and social potential.”

Two side by side views, in an election year, appears perfectly reasonable to me. Doesn’t scream left wing bias to any rational person.

Well, not being in a Herald circulation area I cannot see the printed paper, and have to rely upon the internet version to accurately reflect matters in the print version.

Unless I am mistaken, and can see only “RED”, the Joyce piece is missing.

Moreover, treating Fabian attitudes as being on a par with what has bee adopted and put into practice ion NZ is a prescription for the economic policies that have wrought havoc in Europe. It s just plain silly.

I stand by my view of left wing editorial bias that was never permitted when the paper was owned and run by real newspaper people. So, Alan, go back to your archaic Fabian society nest……

I had not seen Milne till the other night and was quite excited at the prospect of a bit of zip in the team for the first time since Bond. Then I read Rattue — (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/best-of-sport-analysis/news/article.cfm?c_id=1502180&objectid=11185261). All rather depressing really. He is going to get injured so lets not select him! That will prolong his career!

Do some journalists mould their entire lifestyle and outlook on the irrepressible need to be miserable and pessimistic?

Good points.

Placing this young fellow in cotton wool will never allow him to develop his full potential.

Of course he needs careful on-field management, and he will need constant attention, and advice to maintain and develop his physical attributes, but if all those are provided, and Bond seems like an ideal coach to oversee that (given his own experiences), Milne has a good opportunity to go to bigger and better things.

The all blacks are a great sports team. They just happen to be one you dont like.

I bet you they didnt tell you all the facts. The project was put out to tender and they received over a dozen submissions. The cheapest NZ tender price was 17 million, where the winning price was 8 million. On a lowest cost conforming tender process like the one that was used, you have to accept the lowest price that meets the conditions of contract. This was the Bangladeshi submission.

$9 million cheaper… Even if the tender had gone out with a favouritism clause, typically between 3%-10% adjustment in favour, they still would have lost by over $8 million.

Yesterday Dom-Post ran a story about areas in NZ that were warmer than usual. It stated that last year Masterton had attained its highest temperature ever recorded at 33.5 deg C, and then went on to state that Masterton’s records began in 1992.

I posted a comment late last night pointing out that Masterton had a temperature record going back to at least 1906 and NIWA had even published a paper showing how it did its temperature adjustments from different recording stations around the Masterton area

I’m left wondering whether NIWA has any regard for its long-term temperature-adjusted record for Masterton. Were higher temperatures than 33.5 deg C ever recorded in Masterton before 1992? Anyone remember???

@ Maggie Wassilieff, in Feb 1970 we moved farms to the Wairarapa and on a post purchase/preoccupy visit, borrowed the Dalgety Managers car. No record of the date but it was hot, melted tar roads, workplace temps of 40 degrees and poor old managers car covered in tar.
Clearly the hottest we experienced in the 20 years we spent there.

Rattue’s view of Milne is depressing. Any quick can and does have injuries that doesn’t put a black mark against Milne straight away, nor does his inaccuracy. Just trying to remember if it was Hadlee or not that ‘slowed’ down a tad and went for accuracy. I hope Shane Bond looks to have Milne developing within his limits, not pushing them until he has strength all round to exploit those limits when he choses during a bowling spell.

So much for anything useful in negotiations with Iran. Iran are actually threatening the U.S that if there are any more sanctions then they’ll move to approve a bill that requires them to enrich uranium to 60 percent. In other words, they think they’re in control – that they have the upper hand. That’s not supposed to be how it works.

Iran vowed to maintain its nuclear infrastructure and threatened to boost its uranium enrichment capabilities just hours after announcing that it had agreed to a deal to halt some aspects of its contested nuclear program.

Iran and Western nations announced on Sunday that they had agreed to an interim deal to halt portions of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for some $7 billion in sanctions relief.

Secretary of State John Kerry celebrated the interim agreement, which will officially begin on Jan. 20.

However, Iranian officials threatened to ramp up nuclear activities should they feel the West is violating the accord.

“We will in no way, never, dismantle our [nuclear] centrifuges,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told the country’s state-run television station on Sunday, according to New York Times reporter Thomas Erdbrink.

“Iranians endured sanctions for 10 years, resisted, so the world would respect our right to enrichment, this is now the case,” Araqchi was quoted as saying. “This game is played in our court. We cannot lose and return to enrichment as we wish.”

Araqchi reiterated that Iran has a right to enrich uranium, one of the key sticking points in the deal, and predicted that the deal has less than a 50 percent chance of success.

“We don’t need enrichment right from the Americans, who are they to give that right?” Araqchi said. President Barack Obama “said the upcoming talks have a 50-50 percent chance of success, I say its even less.”

Iran will continue to enrich uranium, the key component in a nuclear bomb, up to 20 percent levels until right before the deal takes effect, according to Araqchi.

“Iran will continue with 20 percent uranium enrichment by the end of the day on Jan. 19 and will suspend 20 percent enrichment on Jan. 20,” the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) quoted him as saying.

Iran will immediately begin to see “targeted relief” from the economic sanctions as soon as the deal begins, according to Kerry.

“The $4.2 billion in restricted Iranian assets that Iran will gain access to as part of the agreement will be released in regular installments throughout the six months,” Kerry said in a statement. “The final installment will not be available to Iran until the very last day.”

The White House is refusing to release the official text of the nuclear deal, despite requests from reporters and members of Congress.

“I urge the White House to publicly release the text of the implementation agreement with #Iran for all to review,” Sen. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.) tweeted on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament vowed to boost enrichment to 60 percent, very near the levels needed for a nuclear weapon, should the U.S. Congress pass a new sanctions bill currently up for debate.

“If the U.S. Congress approves any [more] sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Consultative Assembly [the parliament] will accelerate the approval of a bill which requires the government to enrich uranium to the 60 percent grade,” Mohammad Hassan Asafari, a member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told Iran’s Fars News Agency on Sunday.

Iranian Parliamentarians also vowed to end nuclear talks should the new sanctions pass.

“If the U.S. Congress doesn’t abide by the policies of the administration and approves new sanctions, the parliament will be ready to declare Iran’s exit from the nuclear negotiations with the Group 5+1” comprised of the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany, Esmayeel Jalili, a top Iranian lawmaker, told Fars.

Kerry also came out against the new sanctions bill in his Sunday statement.

“I feel just as strongly that now is not the time to impose additional sanctions that could threaten the entire negotiating process,” he said. “Now is not the time for politics. Now is the time for statesmanship, for the good of our country, the region, and the world.”

Obama also opposed new sanctions on Sunday.

The U.S has become a toothless tiger beholden to Iran, seemingly afraid of losing the deal because it makes them look bad politically. They are being held hostage by their own unwillingness to be tough and of losing political face. @gravedodger… Tx… my memory of Wairarapa summers in the 1970s is of disgusting, debilitating heat… and that’s me wandering through the bush though, not out in a bare paddock or in a town.

@kowtow….. I agree…. there seems to be deliberate confusion as to time spans being employed in all these public releases.
Either the entire NZ temperature recorded is being employed (with its attendant adjustments (fudge-factoring) ) or a shorter record is being used (perhaps ony 1 or 2 sunspot cycles long). We really need to have this clarified each time NIWA gives a press release.

Who knows, but presumably 1992 marks the point at which the Masterton record becomes reliable (possibly with the installation of accurate equipment etc) so any unadjusted record before 1992 would be context specific and meaningless if referred to in isolation.

For a private affair, which Brown is adamant in no way impinges on his ability to perform as Mayor of Auckland …

A lot of work is going into resurrecting his political career after a humiliating 10 weeks in the run-up to Christmas that included sordid details of a two-year affair with Bevan Chuang, a damming report that found he failed to declare more than $39,000 in free hotel rooms and upgrades, and censure by councillors …

Mr Brown and his advisers are considering a new year speech with a focus on public transport, in which Mr Brown wants to make a start on the city rail link in 2016. Other goals are more affordable houses and tightening the city’s finances, including reining in debt.
But it has not been decided when or if it the speech happen.

Yesterday morning his chief press secretary, Glyn Jones, refused to say if Mr Brown would continue his “mayor in the chair” face-to face chats, which last took place in September …

Meanwhile, the right-wing local body ticket Affordable Auckland is organising a “Stand Down Len Brown” march up Queen St at noon on February 22.

We have
• a mayor masturbating in office [when he isn’t actually rooting a much younger staff member]

Hes bulked up a bit which is good.

Never easy cutting & pasting stats.. but essentially

13 first class games. 39 wickets. average of 30. strike rate of 53.

Not too bad. Avg needs to come down. Boult/Southee are around 26.

I hope he is given a decent shot and managed by Shane Bond and NZC, doesn’t mean he needs to be given every ODI and T20 straight away. He is the quickest thing we’ve had since Bond and hopefully he will establish some consistency and become a great bowler for NZ. Internationally how many can you think of that are currently playing that can bowl at this pace? I can only think of Johnson who is to inconsistent for me either very good or very bad. Yes he had a very good Ashes but has been dropped numerous times and regularly goes for plenty. He wouldn’t have even been in the Ashes eleven if it wasn’t for injuries to Pattison and Starc.

When are Aussie going to get Cummins back on the park, he was the next big thing and could bowl at 150k+ but appears to be like Bond with the persistent back troubles. Hopefully he can have an extended injury free run and get back on the park, he is still only 20 so has a lot of time infront of him if he can beat the injuries.

Rowan – cummins is back in club cricket. he was due to play in the big bash pretty soon. should be part of the aussie side for the t20 world cup. hes only 20 as well. hes been working with dennis lillee, has an improved action… we will see!

We cannot tell from this paper what is the level of uncertainty on the cumulative effects of all the adjustments……. hey, probably a minor point…but one I remind myself about by flashing “fudge factor” across my eyeballs as I scan the paper.

And for Fig 8 why put a linear trend through this average data…. a fitted polynomial might be a better move?

Well from a quick look, probably not much as the adjustments appear to be discrete therefore the uncertainty would not compound.

And for Fig 8 why put a linear trend through this average data

The linear trend appears to be inferred not applied at a glance, but to be honest that stuff kinda bores me so I’m happy to trust the peer review system on that score. (but not the amateur blog review system mind)

@kowtow: The (former) Paris – Dakar rally hasn’t been run between Paris and Dakar since 2007. Apparently, the threats to kidnap drivers and support crews as they passed through Mauritania, forced the cancellation of the 2008 event and since 2009, it has been raced in South America (and is now referred to as the Dakar Rally).

And it’s not a rally where you’d see Citroens driven by the likes of Sebastian Loeb etc but rather an event that includes classes for off-roaders, trucks and even motorbikes.

@ Scott Chris… Yeah, usually I’m happy enough with peer-reviewing, or at least I was when I was an Editor of the NZJ Botany, as I chose the reviewers for the submitted papers (with the help of an Editorial Board at times).
However I’m asking a simple set of questions….. are the stories the Dom-Post is running on Masterton’s record temperature referenced back to 1992 only….( yesterday’s comment from NIWA is that Masterton’s temp record only extended that far back).

or is today’s frontpage story referencing a century of measurements a contradiction of yesterday’s?

Oh why bother…. I’ve found a Wairarapa Times Sat Jan 2009 stating that 3 days previously the Masterton temp hit 34.6 deg C at their automatic recording station

Pure uncooked, unadjusted data…..the alarmists haven’t got around to doctoring these figures.

Nasska, take a hypothetical Town A and Town B. Both have meteorological records including temperature data dating back to, say 1900.

Both towns have a very similar temperature record and a very similar geo-meteorological aspect. (yes I made up that word but you know what I mean)

In 1960 Town A updates its measuring instruments and its measurement methodology.
In 1970 Town B updates its measuring instruments and its measurement methodology.

Subsequent measurements of the correlative coefficient of the two towns’ temperature records are as follows:

1900 to 1960 … 0.9
1960 to 1970 … 0.8
1970 to 2014 … 0.97 (note the closer to 1, the closer to perfect positive correlation)

Question is, is it fair and scientifically sound to adjust Town B’s temperature record between 1960 and 1970 to that of Town A’s during the same period so that it reflects the 0.97 correlative coefficient of the subsequent accurately measured period, and then to adjust all the pre 1960 data using the same formula?

Erm, in order to measure anything accurately you need to use the same instruments with the same calibration at the same location and using the same methods. I think you need a higher standard of evidence.

I watched the lead story on TV1 news tonight -fuck me.

Evidently some teenagers have been getting on the piss and drinking too much. Imagine that. That’s new – this as a story was fucking appalling, no other way to describe it. Utter utter rubbish. Then there were two pasty faces on decrying that all of a sudden teenagers had discovered alcohol and were abusing it. Imagine.

Dear pasty faced people on TV , I’m an alcoholic, no academic ,law, restriction or availability has anything whats so ever to do with my alcoholisim just as much as no academic, law, restriction or availability has anything to do with my sobriety. You are meddling actually know fuck alls who would be better off contributing to society by stacking shelves at at a bottle store.

Also some dirty prick gives TNNZ a video of Steven Luatua fucking about drinking with some mates,- this lead the news!!!!

Then the second story, some people “some people” have got a sore guts from some cream. A recall of 9000 bottles is underway. The fact that the recall will be tiny as most of the cream has been consumed with no ill effects was like water off a ducks back to TVNZ.

You can’t sell TVNZ- to sell something it has to have a value.

Third story – there was none TV turned off

MANAGEMENT LESSONS

Two robbers walked in to a bank and shouted “Everyone freeze! The money belongs to the bank, life belongs to you”. Everyone laid down quietly.

When the robbers got back home, the younger robber (university educated) told the older robber (who never finished college) “Mate, let’s count how much we got”. The older robber rebutted and said “So much money! We’ll just wait for the news tonight to tell us how much we robbed from the bank!”

This is called “Experience – nowadays experience is more important than paper qualifications!”

After the robbers left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. The supervisor says “Wait wait wait… let’s put the $15 million we embezzled into the amount the robbers robbed”.

This is called “Swimming with the tide – converting an unfavourable situation to your advantage!”

The next day, the TV news reported that $20 million was taken from the bank. The robbers counted and counted but they could only count $5 million. The robbers were very angry and complained “We risked our lives and only took $5 million, the bank manager took $15 million with a snap of his fingers. It looks like it’s better to be educated than to be a thief!”

This is called “Knowledge is worth as much as gold!”

The bank manager was smiling and happy because his personal gambling losses are now covered by the robbery.

This is called “Seizing the opportunity – daring to take risks!”
