50,000 children under three are currently desperate, Labour says, but none will qualify for a payment.
They will just be each 2 year and 2 months older when the first New Zealand child does qualify.

Key’s flag idea is simply stupid.

It’s not a pressing issue that requires attention.

It is potentially divisive.

It is change for no reason, a most unconservative thing.

Opens Key up to ridicule in relation to his stand on referenda; govt referendum on flag ,but not asset sales or smacking or homo parody marriage.

Most established countries have a national botanic symbol ,often used by their sports teams etc and a different national flag .

Leave it as it is.

Apropos of Whaleoil, his appeal to the Court of Appeal against his conviction for breaching suppression orders has still to be heard. The only ground on which he has leave to appeal is that his blog is not “a report or account of proceedings” and therefore not subject to the statute governing suppression orders. That seems inconsistent with his claim to be entitled to be treated by the Courts as a bona fide news organisation.

It’s an interesting one. We all know Key is a poll-driven fruitcake just like Hulun was. Like you kowtow I don’t see it as a pressing issue and it is potentially divisive.

Maybe his calculation is to boost the Conservative Party vote. Anyone conservative who wants to keep it as-is has nowhere else to go but maybe into the Conservative Party – which boosts their chances. I think ACT policy would be to support a referendum on it, but Boscowan will get Epsom if he stands there so that widens National’s support base on the conservative side. Not that most conservatives tend to be single-issue voters but holding it with the general election puts it front-of-mind for everyone.

And those who do support a change in the conservative camp won’t be alienated by a referendum and it might also capture some of the floaters, without having to counter the election bribes from Liarbore with economically damaging counter-proposals.

Pete George’s leader, Peter Dunne, Great Possum Leader of United Future, is for a change of the national flag, which, the Hooerald reports, Dunne says, “”…smacks of British imperialism”, and Dunne-it wants the Union Jack removed.

The problem for Peter Dunne-it will be what to choose for a new national symbol – a possum or a cellphone.

No wonder Pete George was so busy advocating a flag change in yesterday’s general debate thread.

The Labour proposal for a “baby bonus” will do nothing to alleviate child poverty. The “poverty level” is set by taking as the threshold 60% of the household median income, so if most house holds get an extra $60 a week, the median income will change little if at all, and thus the poverty index will not change. Using this index, if every household in NZ doubled its income, the number living in “poverty” would remain the same. Ditch this index.

The police’s destruction of young guys by inserting them in gangs under cover then virtually abandoning them when this wrecked their lives is a story of gross betrayal by the State. The police’s treatment of these guys was, and probably still is, bloody appalling.

Kowtow: The two referenda are different beasts, so no inconsistancy

A CIR is a group of people getting together and asking the government to do something (except for the last CIR, which was an opinion poll question not requiring any action). The Government can say yes or no to such requests

A government initiated referendum is the government saying to the public “We want to know what you want us to do on this issue”. I’ve only ever seen it for issues that are too ‘big’ – such as constitutional change or to do with national identity – for a government to attempt to change without consultation/general approval from the public.

All he is doing is opening the discussion which, IMHO, is a good thing (regardless of how I feel about the flag)

I’m totally puzzled by this flag business. That is the sort of thing a Prime Minister should do when he wants to distract people from the state of the economy and prevent them from listening too much to the Opposition. I should have thought the opposite would be the case – getting voters to look at how the economy is doing (very well) and think about what the Opposition are saying (increasingly desperate and stupid things) would be exactly what he would want to encourage.

One thing that isn’t clear to me from the media coverage, though – Did Key raise the issue himself, or did he simply answer the question when somebody asked him what he thought about the possibility of changing the flag?

Re Albert Ross at 8.46 on the national flag. What about the possibility of Key hedging against some heavy economic downturn this year if China’s economy gets in knot. A flag debate could divert voters’ opinions, but only “could”, especially if all but ACT support a flag referendum.

Amazing how politicians disregard referenda (as on smacking laws), then want to distract voters with more of them.

I don’t want to change our flag at all but John Key is I believe quite clever regarding this issue:

Firstly, he brought it up the same year as a royal visit which will appeal somewhat to the anti royals.
Secondly, he indicated an alternative which is not likely to be controversial as would some native symbol.
Thirdly, he kept the conversation casual showing it will not be an election issue.

I wonder if Key has got wind of something and beaten whoever to the punch. He is a very astute man.

The flag issue is a non issue and I don’t see any reason to change. However it’s a great time to discuss it in public. One thought though- I think it will swell the debate about a republic. That would help National in the election.
Whale Oil’s efforts in the debate about that incident in Greymouth is an indication of a person craving for publicity. Whatever the circumsatances of the family etc it was completely inappropriate of Slater’s comments. The death threats are a reaction no one can encourage but Slater should realize that he has touched a raw nerve in the population. There are times to shut up,take a deep breath and count to 100 before reacting.
A message to all bloggers- be reasonable and cut the nastiness. I get alarmed at the use of swearwords,crude personal attacks and the self righteousness of some bloggers. I get caught up in that at times, it does no good for a caring society.

You’re revealing your agenda again Jack. I’ve advocated a flag change (and an anthem change and dropping the monarchy) independently for yonks, here and elsewhere.

David Cunliffe has also said he supports a flag change, along with John Key, Russel Norman, Winston Peters and Hone Harawira (and Peter Dunne). So I seem to be in step with the vast majority of party leaders – all but one.

No wonder I was advocating for a flag change, nearly all party leaders have agreed with me.

I’ve asked Colin Craig what he thinks (via Ask Colin) but he hasn’t responded yet.

Hi Colin,

Do you support the ending of fluoridation in New Zealand?

If you do support ending fluoridation how would you go about a transparent process where all information from both sides of the debate could be heard fairly and equitably.

I am referencing the $47k (minimum) spent by the WDHB (taxpayers money) against the $12k provided by Fluoride Free Hamilton (This amount was collected from donations from individual donors).

Hi Kane and thanks for your questions. My view is as follows;

Water supply and the treatment of town water supplies is managed at a local level. I support councils having referendum on this issue (costs are minimised if information and forms are sent out with rates notices) to determine what the public wants. Information sent to voters should give fair and equal chance for both those for and against to have their say. In this electronic age I suggest council establishing a website to give the same equal opportunity to both sides to present their case.

People who do not have a computer can of course access the council information website at their local public library if they are interested. This approach helps level the playing field when it comes to who has the deeper pockets, as the primary information source is balanced.

Yes my personal view is that water should be delivered to households as chemical free as reasonably possible, while still being safe to drink – i.e. without fluoride.

I support more awareness of the concerns around fluoridation. When properly informed, I do think many communities will choose non-fluoridation.

The simple answer to the anti fluoridation debate is do an analysis of a control population in Tauranga ( with out fluoridation) and one in Auckland ( with fluoridation ).
A study of this kind will readily expose the absurd claims by the anti fluoridation lobby that adding it to water supplies is responsible e.g for the lowering of IQs and causing cancers like Osteosarcoma in the general population.
Colin Craig needs to be more closely quizzed on this issue. it looks as though he is still in Conspiracy related la la land.

If anyone should pay for the bogus Ernst and Young Report, it is former Auckland Council CEO Doug McKay, in my considered opinion.

He did NOT follow ‘lawful due process’ as outlined in the Auckland Council ‘Code of Conduct’ s.8 ‘Compliance.

Former Auckland Council CEO Doug McKay effectively made up his own process and appointed his own people.

Why?

In my considered opinion, in order to help protect Mayor Len Brown from possible criminal prosecution.

The fact that the Ernst and Young ‘Inquiry’ was NOT done in a proper way has NEVER been discussed by Auckland Council, so how can it have been ‘dealt with’ (the basis for (unlawfully) denying my speaking rights).

This Auckland Council is literally brimming with corrupt ‘conflicts of interest’, in my considered opinion.

Was a day that people before the court were named and then the outcome of the case was also published. Innocents seen to be innocent, guilties seen to be guilty. Now all we hear is that ” a 22 year old man will appear before the Court today” along with all-too frequently “interim name suppression has been granted”. So he’s only going to sign up for a single referendum on corporal punishment? He seems to be speaking about “binding””referenda” (plural). What else does he want to waste money on? A divisive anti-abortion referendum? Revisiting the issue of street prostitution, which his party made a submission on, to the Local Government and Environmental Select Committee when it came to Ross Robertson’s benighted and repressive Manukau City Council (Regulating Prostitution in Specified Places) Bill? Even when the Christian Right circulated a petition against it for a prior referendum back in 2003, yet failed to get enough signatures?

And before the social conservative “usual suspects” say anything, do *they* really want *binding* referenda on euthanasia and cannabis, given libertarian outcomes on such issues within the United States? All because some overexcited fundie wants the ‘right’ to hit his kids???

Charlotte Dawson got given an improper hair dye by accident, hence some of her hair fell out.
Her really nicer supportive comment to all those who were having cancer treatment was on prime tv she said “i looked awful like some kind of cancer patient.”

So true. I don’t know why he continues to enjoy a good reputation. His thing with Monica Lewinsky wasn’t even an “affair” as Paul points out. He was a predator, taking advantage of a teenage girl. He’s had a slew of affairs, with other women too, including Paula Jones and Gennifer Flowers.

The other thing you need to consider is that – some of us- are able to form our own opinions and not simply repeat what we read somewhere. Those opinions are just as valid as ones coming from a “source”

But I think the main point is that Chuckbird is capable of answering my post himself and am sure he has not given you an enduring power of attorney to act for him on KB.
Again I think its reasonable to ask of him his source for an interesting and extraordinary claim.

Kea, several years ago this quote was thrashed out on KB. It was established (from memory) that she never called them inbred. Feral, yes, although I think that might have been taken a little out of context by Nick Smith.
