A slap on the hand for electoral fraud

NewstalkZB reports:

Party member Daljit Singh has failed in his bid to be discharged without conviction after being found guilty of electoral fraud.

He wanted a discharge without conviction? Incredible. He thinks he did nothing wrong.

Singh – a candidate in the first Auckland “supercity” elections – has been sentenced at the High in Auckland on two counts of using forged documents to increase his chances of winning a seat on his board.

He has been sentenced to five months community detention and 200 hours community work.

A slap on the hand with a slightly wet bus ticket..

His lawyer Ron Mansfield earlier told Justice Woolford a conviction would prevent Singh from his work in the real estate industry, as an immigration advisor, as a Justice of the Peace and as a marriage celebrant.

That is a good thing. Again Singh seems to feel he has done nothing wrong.

Singh stood as a candidate at the 2010 elections. Even after his arrest he was pictured at Labour Party fundraisers with the then Leader. So does Labour have any comment on the sentencing of one of their official candidates? Is he a member in good standing? Is he eligible to stand for them again?

UPDATE: Labour have said he is no longer a member.
