Labour loses another Chief of Staff

February 11th, 2014 at 1:54 pm by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

leader David Cunliffe’s chief of staff has resigned five months into the job, citing ill health.

Ms Brandon was a respected Auckland lawyer before taking up the role in Mr Cunliffe’s office last September.

Sources said Labour’s caucus and staff were told today she had resigned because of a serious case of shingles.

Ms Brandon has been on leave for several weeks because of the illness.

I blogged when Brandon was appointed that she was highly regarded at the Auckland Council and a good appointment. Her departure is a loss to Labour. It means they will shortly be onto their 5th Chief of Staff in just over two years.

I wonder if Wendy will go back to the AC as I don’t think she has been replaced.

Labour labouring under leader labour losses

It may be a coincidence, but it’s quite possible the job of managing the Labour leader’s office is looking like being in the too hard basket.

It may not be easy finding a suitable and willing replacement.

    And another National opinion:

    @JudithCollinsMP
This is bad news for Cunliffe. Wendy is a good & decent person.

If Judith says see is a good and decent person, that’s high praise indeed.

One of the triggers of shingles is stress. Was only a matter of time, really, working in that office.

It must be hard to work for someone who publicly blames his staff when things go wrong.

David F, they need your insight.

Does Colin Craig think that this is a punishment from god for her wicked behaviour in taking a job with Labour ?

    My comment in GD:

Sources said Labour’s caucus and staff were told today she had resigned because of a serious case of shingles.

That information doesn’t need to be in the public arena. ‘Ill health’ is adequate enough I would have thought.

Seriously – you think a council lawyer is “highly regarded”?

KG, “highly regarded” & “highly paid” are interchangeable.

    KiwiGreg,
I have known Wendy for a long time. She is a god operator.
She actually brought order to chaos in the council legal team. She also chopped back the internal and external legal spend there by a significant percentage.

“Shingles” – code word for “David Cunliffe is a complete wanker”

    @Roflcopter.
There are actually two meanings for the codeword “shingles” as in “rocks”.
The first is. “I am sick and tired of having DC throw rocks at me when he stuffs up”
The second is “I must have had rocks in my head to take this job with the idiot as boss”
    Take your choice.

Normally I would have agreed that we didn’t need to know about the shingles.

However, when someone (anyone) cites ‘illness’ as a reason for no longer wanting to work for David Cunliffe, one would naturally assume that they were sick of Cunliffe.

In that sense, it’s perfectly reasonable to provide a few extra details.

Yes, commiserations, Shingles can be very painful and debilitating. However typically it resolves in a few months and most individuals don’t experience more than one attack. Comes from the persistence of the Chickenpox virus (Varicella zoster) in the body, apparently most people (who have had Chicken Pox) experience it at some time although often it is so minor as to be hardly noticed.

@Alex given this is the council the bar is pretty low. I admit a cheap throwaway on my part but I’m sorry, the “A” team don’t work for council.

    Kiwigreg,
Historically the legal team at AC weren’t that flash, but more recently and under Wendy’s stewardship they picked up their game.
You would be also be surprised where “A” team lawyers pop up.

So 4 people employed by the Labour party have the integrity to know that socialism is a complete failure and they are not prepared to back a failure of a party for their own salary … only 4 ….

What a history of leadership this party has . . . one common denominator, not one has ever stood on their own feet in the personal supporting stakes, take a look; Cunliffe got close, but his CV was found to be fraudulent.
