Will Key forgive this breathtaking disaster?

How long before Prime Minister John Key decides Hekia Parata is a liability in Cabinet?

The only saving grace in the kohanga reo debacle has been Key’s calculated decision to leave chief of staff Wayne Eagleson behind while he is on a 10-day trip to China and Europe.

The decision to refer allegations of misspending by a kohanga reo-related company to the Serious Fraud Office – less than 25 hours after Parata assured the “taxpayers of New Zealand” that there had been no impropriety – looked like something that had Eagleson’s fingerprints on it.

Her handling of the affair has been a breathtaking disaster.

During a press conference on Tuesday night Parata blustered and bullied her way through questions about her assurance that none of the $92 million in public funding allocated to the Kohanga Reo National Trust, or paid to its subsidiary, Te Pataka Ohanga, had been misspent.

After giving reporters 10 minutes to read the report by accountants Ernst & Young, Parata announced: “I am satisfied that public moneys are being expended in the appropriate way.”

When it was eventually pointed out to her that none of the spending relating to wedding dresses or Trelise Cooper outfits had been addressed by the report, she triumphantly told reporters that these matters were never included in the terms of reference.

She insisted, meanwhile, that there were no instances of the subsidiary receiving public money.

It took a Kohanga Reo National Trust board member to eventually confirm that kohanga reo got money from the Ministry of Education and the subsidiary got its money from kohanga reo.

Parata’s logic appears to suggest that any agency can use a standalone company to avoid accountability for taxpayer funds.

I was shopping at New World for ingredients for Japanese curry when I spied the latest issue of “North and South” at the checkout. It had a large, pink, “Toy Story”-Ham-like piggy bank pig, and the title underneath which read something like “Does Money Make You Mean?”

Has anyone else seen this?

Perhaps when people work hard for their money, they resent having it taken from them to give to those who choose not to work.

Of perhaps a certain meanness makes you money in the first place. If this is so, then “North and South” have gotten it the wrong way around. “Does Mean Make You Money?”

Lundy has been given another date with the jury, I don’t believe the crown should bother as IMO they don’t stand a hope in hell of reconvicting him, but lets see them waste millions of dollars in taxpayer funded money trying anyway, this is not to say that Lundy is innocent, which I don’t have a strong opinion on either way but the case is that weak that there is so many areas of ‘reasonable doubt’.
I imagine that after the crown has lost this one then the Auckland tax lawyer will pay one of her hired guns to write a written to perscription academic essay on why he “shouldn’t” be compensated, but maybe we are getting ahead of things. Won’t be surprised when this case becomes another train wreck and that the crown again won’t be able to admit that they got it wrong.

We shall see.

John, time to do the right thing, get rid of COllins and appoint a justice minister that can actually understand the concept of ‘justice’.

It took almost two years — from June 2009 to May 2011 — before the wreckage of the Air France flight was found on a plateau more than 11,000 feet deep in the Atlantic off the coast of Brazil. With no hint of where the Malaysian plane might have gone down, Gallo said that perhaps the only hope it will be found rests on the discovery of some floating debris.

“It’s a big chunk of the Indian Ocean, almost the size of the North Atlantic,” Gallo said. “If [the plane] is in the ocean, it can range from the flat sediments of the Bay of Bengal, two miles-plus deep, and the further south you get, west of Perth is one of the most incredibly complicated underwater terrains on the planet.”

The sum would grow four-fold in the 1990s. And then it soared higher still, reaching a peak just before the financial crisis. In 2006 New York’s investment banks paid nearly $40 billion in bonuses (adjusted for inflation)—about ten times the budget of the United Nations. During the crisis, banks had to show contrition and bonuses halved. But they have restarted their ascent. In 2013 the bonus pool of New York’s financial-sector employees increased 15% to about $27 billion

The black box will be pinging its heart out for another couple of weeks. If they get a fix on it they’ll find a way to access it.

The USA have interests & China has (presumably) lost about 200 nationals….there’s too much ‘face’ at stake for a way not to be found.

Pete, all planes flying the North Atlantic have to have software that would enable the location of where it went down. Many other airlines flying other routes also use it. Not in this case.

I wouldn’t be so sure about Lundy being found not guilty at his retrial .
Btw, I believe Judith Collins has no problem understanding the concept of justice.
Your problem is that she didn’t accept a decision by a certain Canadian judge who obviously made some basic errors when he was interviewing a multiple murderer. I mean if he didn’t believe all of the answers that murderer gave him,as appears to be the case, then how could he believe anything that same person told him.

Rowan, Fisher didn’t say DB shouldn’t be compensated – he differed with the process and said that by his ‘suggested’ alternative Binnie may have still arrived at the same decision – innocent on the BOP. Similarly with the marks found by David Giles on the photograph of Robin Bain’s thumb, Sanderson said that he couldn’t exclude the marks having not have arrived there by Robin handling the magazine. To respond to the ‘we lost the battle, but we also lost the war’ lot, hazards descent in madness. About now a giggling idiot should remind us for the 25,000th time that David did the washing that morning – and every other. I’d like one of them to explain the blood smears on the father’s hands and his blood in the laundry – but on one will.

Am aware of that, my post was about Lundy, the old goat above as usual tried to turn it into a DB thread. You are correct as usual with a minor correction, Sanderson was the optometrist not the guy who did the police firearms report.
As usual no one is able to answer your questions because there are no answers that supports the ‘daddy is innocent’ myth and we are left with unsubstainted crap like the 8.58 post.
An important lesson for the spinners; “just because I don’t agree with it, or don’t want to admit it, doesn’t make it not true” but I guess they are to stupid to learn anything at all.

I like the fact that Robin ‘wasn’t’ guilty despite having smears and smears of blood on his palms but Lundy is guilty because of a speck on a shirt that has never legitimately been confirmed as dna.

Your correction is accurate Rowan, Walsh? was the scientist who couldn’t exclude RB from handling the magazine on the morning he was found with blood on his palms, while Sanderson was the optical expert whose evidence was hidden from that unfortunate Dunedin mistrial.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday announced a 12.2 percent increase to China’s military budget for 2014 to 808.2 billion yuan ($132 billion).

Observers said that the growth is spurred by increasing global tensions and is consistent with China’s growing economy.
