Sir PJ earns a living via royalties. Every lost ‘sale opportunity’ will never be recovered and as a result, pirates are depriving him of income.

What sale opportunity? I was talking about copying in general, not copying that resulted in lost sales.

You know…. the principle of being remunerated for your own work.

The worker is worthy of his hire. This doesn’t mean victimising people who have not done you any harm when they copied one of your creative works.

For example, take the case of someone who copies Lord of the Rings and watches it when they would not have watched it if they had to pay for it.
Peter Jackson suffers no loss from this, yet the copyright hounds will accuse the copier of the crime of theft.

5 US Generals Threaten Obama With Coup Should He Attack Syria

information originating from a well-known former General at the Pentagon; everybody knows this guy’s name.

Information received so far is that five of the US Military’s highest-ranking Generals have met with Barack Obama and warned him that if he orders an attack on Syria he will be arrested and charged with Treason for attempting to provide aid and comfort to our enemies, namely the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front in Syria.

The generals reportedly punctuated that statement with a promise that if he is convicted of Treason, Barack Obama will find himself swinging at the end of a rope at Leavenworth.

In New York it’s illegal to give homeless assistance with food or cash. We’re seeing this in Hamilton right now with a big story of people using initiative being stymied by council. Some US states are sending homeless to internment camps.

That’s the little stuff. The big stuff is martial law. Threatened to enforce compliancy.

The west have all but conceded Crimea.Rightly too.It is Russian.I wouldn’t want one soldier from the west to die for it especially when the ukrainians seem so eager not to.

Obummer and no other western leader won’t go to war over Crimea.

Now if Russia pushes west that would be different.I doubt they will,they have gas to sell to Europe,why blow up your customers?

Ugly, that is precisely the point. They are watching it for free. Why should Jackson make it at all then? He made it because he could make a bob or three safe in the knowledge that his intellectual property was protected and some thieving little gits wouldn’t be allowed to copy it. He got the finance to make it because those who financed the production costs had copyright protection that is essential in not only getting a return on their investment, but actually getting their investment back

Have you any idea of what it costs to make a film? Do you have any understanding of how they are financed and how people get paid and their priorities as to payment? If you do and you remain a proponent of doing away with copyright protection then I can only assume that your visual entertainment needs are met by Shortland Street and the multitude of mind-bogglingly crap so-called “reality” shows that are as cheap as chips to make and served up to qualify as “NZ” content and a great night of entertainment for morons who are incapable of appreciating what is at stake.

No, what Obama has done is declared that the continued Western aggression will now go underground because he was sick of Putin making him look like a complete and utter dickwad loser before the world’s media, time and time and time again.

So now we sit back and wait for civilian atrocities committed by ~~Russians~~ Academi mercs dressed as Russians, breathlessly reported by the letter networks and repeated by stephie & co without regard to pause for thought as to whether the Russians really would do that to themselves or other assorted ~~human beings~~ ‘ragheads’ when they weren’t doing that to them before…

Can someone who knows something about polling explain why the latest Roy Morgan poll was done on 873 voters ? Why not have a round figure of 1000 ? The cynic in me says they could only get that many interested enough to answer the question.

Indeed, the reason we have spent this sum on international trademarks / IP protection, is to protect us against the public! Not the other way around.

But you did invest the money which is what matters. Similarly, despite the fact that many New Zealanders probably have illegally downloaded Peter Jackson’s movies, he still profits enough to make it worth his while to make the movies. Indeed some of the most profitable movies are also the most pirated. This doesn’t mean copyright should be done away with, but it may mean the specific form of any regulations over intellectual property, including any proposed changes in legislation from the industry, are not as critical (or even necessary) as they might be if there was a serious threat to the ongoing production of intellectual property that is valued by society.

By coincidence – our lawyer has just dropped in and I read out (most of) your comment. He reckons you have too much time on your hands – and not enough of it has been spent reading! Heh.

Does anyone actually pirate Shortland Street?

Lets imagine that from next week 10 million Americans started pirating the show online. Would Shortland Street subsequently make more or less money?

The TV series Game of Thrones is estimated to be the most pirated TV show of 2012 and 2013. The budget for the first season is estimated at about 50-60 million dollars (wiki). How has it sustained three seasons with its fourth season about to start soon? Surely no one would invest such sums with such widespread piracy.

Because he enjoys doing it is one reason. Making money is another.

What intellectual property? An essential quality of property is exclusive possession.

Ok, so you think Radosław Sikorski threatened the protestors with martial law, and presumably death. I had to ask, because that interpretation of what he said is just incredible, because he was warning them, based on experience of happened in Poland in the past, not threatening them!

Have you ever watched something and thought ‘wow – nothing about this irritates me’ ?

Choice TV – ‘You Live In What ?’

People and the very cool quirky places they live. It was awesome. The people were great – the homes were jaw-dropping and interesting – and no filler. They got it just right – let’s look at one of them for a bit and then show you another one. In thirty minutes you’d see at least ten.

Instead of spending all day wanking over one house and listening to some whiny bitch tell you how her yoga class inspired the stitching pattern on her bedspread for a whole episode. They really nailed it – and right as I ate my main meal – bingo !!

Never mind mate, you carry on doing what you’re doing, and believing that somehow that’s going to save the world.
Since you’re so big on seeming to do the right things, maybe you should get a Prius too.

See that’s the weird thing about deniers that I just don’t get.

The warmists promote ideas, technology and what not. And sure, you may be right, perhaps there are more than a few that are a bit “pious”/high ‘n’ mighty about it. But they’re not hurting anyone. Or mostly, they’re not. They have ideas and attitudes. Mostly new technologies aren’t hurting anyone either. Technology evolves like this -: faster, cheaper, more efficient, using less raw material, less likely to cause damage to man and his environment, more likely to let man continue with higher brain function and so on… Technology will continue to develop like this.

Then – you always have to ask yourself – what’s behind the message? So, in the case of most of the warmists, what’s behind it may very well be that high ‘n’ mighty feeling and perhaps that is a good and a bad thing. But it is a something that is a part of a tangible human drive to “make things better”. It is that constant struggle for something better, faster, cheaper, more efficient and less likely to cause damage to man and his environment.

The deniers, however, seem to have a classic conservative “nothing’s broken, status quo, nothing to see here” stance. And when you think “what’s behind the message” you can only come up with one thing – the classic industrial age trying to save its own butt from extinction.

Because, otherwise, why would you not favour making better, faster, smarter, cheaper tols that were less likely to cause damage to man and his environment?
