Fenton retires

May 16th, 2014 at 1:00 pm by David Farrar

The Herald reports:

Labour MP will leave Parliament at the next election.

The list MP announced today she would not seek re-election at the September election.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served in Parliament as a Labour MP for nearly nine years,” she said.

I wish Darien well. She always stood up for her views, and is a very approachable MP.

The retirement makes sense. It helps Labour rejuvenate, and even in the unlikely chance of a Labour-led Government she was unlikely to be a Minister (not close to Cunliffe).

This brings the number of retirements to four – Ross Robertson, Shane Jones, Rajen Prasad and now Darien Fenton.

Speaking of two minutes’ hate let’s take a trip down memory lane:

So, Mad Butcher, you have a choice, but so do I

Sucking up to John Key big time. I’m never going near him again.

Yes, he’s been good in the past. I don’t know what happened.

I especially liked the part where a couple of poor, deluded Labourites suggest the following:

Regan – We’ve got to earn votes, we can’t sit back and expect people to vote for us based on history

Brad – Perhaps Labour should work to earn back his support then.

    Fenton nutted those sentiments promptly:

I agree Regan, but we don’t need sycophants either

    Brad – Why?

Funnily enough I checked back through DPF’s “Fenton” threads of the day and found nothing from moderate, milky, mikenmild about this, or Psycho Milt either.

It’s almost as if there’s two sets of standards being applied!

Or anyone without a safe electorate seat below #30 on the list I suspect.

The weather-boy will hang in there, as will the other weather announcer, and the news boy or the other news boy if selected and be put on the list. I don’t think there are any Shortland Street “stars” lining up just yet, but if they do they will be on the list, probably below #30 though. I don’t think Labour has tapped into the rich vein of political talent that is Home and Away just yet, I suppose we will need to watch that space. Good to see Labour is moving away from junkies, porn connoisseurs and drunk drivers to fill its list though.

    Labour’s got talent.

Well of course not. In Leftie world that sort of abuse is water off a ducks back. In Leftie world what Darien said about Leitch “sucking up” to John Key and other comments – with all the implications of Class Traitor status – was immensely more hurtful:

“I honestly don’t know what to say, to be fair – and it’s not often that I’m lost for words. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong.

“I’m very disappointed and it’s just taken the wind out of my sails. I’m absolutely gutted by her comments.”

Sir Peter said he supported Helen Clark when Labour was in power and took her to Warriors matches.

“The National Party never complained that I supported Helen Clark,” he said.

“I have been hurt immensely by her, last night I broke down and cried, I just feel stabbed in the back”.

    Et tu, Brute.

I was going to refrain, but I can’t. That statement infers she was elected in the first place. She was not. She is a list MP that no one elected nor voted for. She became an MP not on electoral merit, but rather by her position ordained by the Labour Party on its Party list. Fenton was only ever a seat warmer by dint of Party politic, not by popular vote in any electorate. To claim that she does not seek re-election elevates her achievement beyond being merely a name on a list. Yet that is all that she ever was, a name on an un-elected list cobbled together by a Party that 72% of the nation now regards as a joke. Don’t let the door slap your ample arse on the way out.
