This should not be allowed in the regulated period

This billboard would be fine before the regulated period, but the rules are much tighter during the regulated period and I would be very surprised if this falls within the rules.

UPDATE: It seems that despite the crest, it was not funded from the parliamentary budget. Mana have agreed to remove the crest as that normally signifies it has been paid for by Parliament.

And outside the regulated period such a sign most probably requires resource consent.

Also from Harawira: Burning the flag or accepting the evil

Burning the Israeli flag in Auckland in protest over the murder of innocent civilians in Gaza is nothing to be ashamed of” said MANA Leader and Tai Tokerau MP, Hone Harawira. “Calling for both sides to stand down when one side is annihilating the other though, IS something to be ashamed of.”

    http://mana.net.nz/2014/07/burning-the-flag-or-accepting-the-evil/

I condemn Israel’s heavy handed response but I also condemn the continual provocation from the Palestinians. Harawira, Minto and many others seem to see it as totally one-sided.

Truth in advertising would have a swastika and a ‘Beware, racist inside’ in large letters on Johns hoarding

A few stickers saying “New Zealand’s laziest MP” would certainly be appropriate.

Someone posted this on Facebook last night, which made me re-read the rules and I’d agree with DPF that this is probably outside of them. I imagine Mana might argue it’s “contact information” but try reading the physical address and url from a stationary vehicle, let alone a moving one, which this is obviously designed for.

Sykes, not being an MP, can do as she wishes (within council bylaws) and her signs won’t have been paid for by Parliamentary Services (i.e. the taxpayer).

hmmm if Hone’s going to argue that this isn’t an election billboard, it will also not be a election violation if somebody tags it.

Not just you – he *does* look Chinese!

I’ll bet he hasn’t got the Chinese work ethic though.

    RRM,

The problem is the parliamentary crest on the billboard. That strongly suggests Hone paid for this billboard from his parliamentary funding. Which is money that shouldn’t be used for electioneering.

Political parties are meant to pay for their election materials from their own funding, not from the taxpayer’s money.

Harawira must remove crest from billboards

Mana leader Hone Harawira will remove the Parliamentary crest from his campaign billboards after claims he was using taxpayer funding to pay for the hoardings.

The use of the crest prompted the Taxpayers’ Union to lodge a complaint with Speaker David Carter, asking him to investigate.

Parliamentary funding cannot be used for election purposes.

But a spokeswoman for Parliamentary Service said it had already investigated the issue and spoken with Harawira’s office. No taxpayer funding had been used to pay for the boards.

“The signs have not been paid for or funded in any way by Parliamentary Service,” she said.

“In addition, Mr Harawira’s office is ensuring the parliamentary crest will not be visible on any of his election signs.”

The spokeswoman said last night that the use of the crest would generally denote the use of parliamentary funding.

Harawira also had a wee tiz at the Taxpayers’ Union.

Vile, nasty pieces of work…That they be given any power is terrifying for anyone who knows their true agenda

It subsequently astounds me that people seem to be getting sucked in by bullshit like this-
