That interview by Lisa Owen was just a joke. She does love the sound of her own voice and insisted on answering her own questions and cutting over the top of the prime minister. John did very well not to lose his rag, which was her intention, of course.

I’ve been so critical of National and John Key in the past that I can hardly believe I’m writing this. The alternatives to a National government are so awful that I really hope sanity will prevail on Saturday. True, National are limp socialists…. but what would happen to our country under a Labour-led coalition of ecofucks, madmen, criminals and wierdos? However, I fear that even if National lead the pack they will still have to do a deal with some of the self-same fringe dwellers…. so what will be gained? The tail(s) are wagging the dog. Is this what people hoped for when they voted in MMP?

Of course this is the week that the media have been working towards for months, now having so far pooed in their own nests.
– the week to finally go hard and try and destroy John Key, National Party and other non left parties, and finally New Zealand.

What I expect to see is vitriol pouring from their orifices and all the opposition parties mouths individually and collectively.

We can only hope that New Zealand comes out without being destroyed both from within and from overseas.

I see from yet another poll that primarily Right voters in Napier (National+Conservatives poll 55% vs Labour’s 39%) are in danger of losing the seat to the Labour candidate thanks to the spilt vote (33 & 22% respectively).

I suppose it’s too much to expect enough McVicar’s voters to vote tactically to block Labour?

But regardless, this is a perfect example of the failings of MMP – whether they lose the seat against their predominant wishes OR are forced to vote tactically to support the second best (in their view) candidate instead.

Using the STV (Single Transferrable Vote) system like Australians do would immediately solve the problem – you vote for whom you really like but, if that doesn’t work, your vote isn’t wasted but goes to your second choice.

Interesting for me to see how The Herald operates. I wrote to one of their arts journalists to make a point about an article they had written. As well as receiving a pleasant enough response from the journalist I also got a request from one of the editorial staff asking if they could print my letter in the Herald on Sunday letters column. I guess that on the face of it this seems kosher enough- I did after all write a letter to one of the paper’s staff. But what it mainly said to me was that the Herald wants first and foremost to be provocative and controversial. They wanted to print my letter deliberately to foment controversy. (I refused their request, incidentally.)

Guess that’s the aim of the media, though. To stir.

Slipster- You’re right about STV but when there wash a push for change to MMP and a referendum held Key and National were as quiet as a mouse.

No guts as usual. Key could have influenced the poll by taking a position (as he did on Marriage Redefinition and as he is doing on traditional flag change) but he said nothing.

Once again we suffer for the Nat’s gutless inadequacy in turning back changes made by the Progressives.

Perhaps I am a member of a small minority who doesn’t have TV and do not buy a paper so the only parties who have canvased my vote are the Conservatives and the Greens. I maybe very happy with most of what National has done in the previous six years but being left in the dark by both National and Labour discourages me … there is so much more National could do but only the Greens are spelling it out for me. The biggest drawback I see to the Greens is that they are a junior partner with Labour and the other fruitcake left parties.

MMP was quickly given the very astute and prophetic translation ‘more Maori politicians’. That rather glib description said it all for me at the time; and so it has proved to be, but the ‘Maori’ bit wasn’t necessarily meant to be taken at face value; to me it meant pretty much anyone could have a go.

Which is how I sum up a lot of the modern age we live in. There are 22 year old half wit cub reporters right across the media spectrum ‘having a go’, 22 year old pious girls from comfortable backgrounds brandishing sociology degrees and trying to solve social problems way above their pay grade, having a go, and Brendan Horan, an utter, utter moron having a go at being an MP.

Let’s not forget that about 20 % of MPs are about the same calibre of Horan, or worse.

After watching the responses to J Keys interview with Dann on the GCSB ,it is obvious John Keys clear and rational explanation goes way over the heads of the ideological fantasists that make up the opposition and panelists there to discuss the issue.
Absolute masterstroke by Key to accurately describe Dotcoms henchmen as henchmen,Cunliffe, Norman and some gray haired old clown on Q&A got completely hung up by this accuracy and found themselves ,in their cognitive dissonance ,unable to get over it.

Perhaps Wiseowl, I won’t argue that point. But this is exactly the issue facing the Conservative Napier voters now: Do you vote for McVicar and run a very serious risk of getting Labour instead or do you abandon him and vote National?

This is what STV (or a couple of similar modifications of same) would solve right away. Ironically, the small parties should be the ones pushing it the most – if nothing else, at least it would allow everyone to see the true level of their support unmarred by tactical considerations.

I noticed this morning that the left wing weasels on Q + A (Dann, Miller et al ) are criticising J Key or describing Greenwald (and presumably when he appears by video, Assange) as Dotslob’s “henchmen”.

This some how seen as an unnecessary slight…… and it was good to hear Key bounce that back at Dann with “because they are.”

Dear, oh dear… And all the vitriol directed at J Key, plus a wish to rape his daughter, is somehow acceptable. Sadly I see some of that demented invective frequently used here by ultra right wig folks. That just confirms the belief that the real difference in behaviour between the extreme left and the extreme right, is their respective names. 🙂

I don’t always agree with National. They can lean too far towards socialism for me, especially benefits, but Paula is doing a great job improving those statistics. So I do agree with a tiny bit of what you say 🙂 🙂 But National is the most STABLE party. I am pleased Bill has been in charge of the economy during the recovery…

If we suddenly moved far right there would be huge demonstrations, pragmatism has to be the way to go. Just keep the Gweens out. If they get in you’d have something to rant about

David Parker’s Big Tool and Capital Gains Tax?

I have often wondered “At what point will global warming will become a nuclear winter?”
Glasshouse gases hold the sun’s heat in, warming the earth, but at what stage will we have enough pollutant krap up there to stop the heat penetrating to start with?

Likewise, Labour propose David Parker’s Big Tool to interfere with Kiwi Savor contributions – increasing them and making them compulsory, and reducing your ability to buy a house – to dampen demand and therefore the price of houses.

CGT is to strip 15% of capital gains out of any asset sold for gain.
So when a house is sold, as in the case of Penny Bright – court ordered only to realize the cash needed to pay rate arrears – 15% of any gain from Labour’s Valuation Day must be paid as tax.

If the David Parker’s Big Tool functions as intended, what of the CGT?
If houses start loosing value, will CGT – an planned intended capital loss, rather than gain – become a refund of the difference from V Day?

Just wondering … 🙂

John Key gave an impressive interview on the use of the GCSB protecting us from cyber attacks and it providing us with information about overseas risks. This for instance helps protects the All Blacks when they travel overseas to countries like the UK where there is a significant terrorist risk and now Australia. It also protects us from undesirable immigrants though we let the odd Baddie in like Kim Dot Com. We recently experienced a cyber attack when the Spark network collapsed when malware got into people’s emails. Mass surveillance by GCSB may have stopped that and mass surveillance may be required for that protection. But mass surveillance can be abused and will be unless there are careful controls on what it can be used for. John Key has said he will not authorise it.

Waikatogirl … I am contrasting the informative material I received from the Conservatives and the Greens against the mere ‘instruction’ to vote Labour and nothing from National …. I worked for TV for 26 years which is why I don’t waste my time watching what it has degenerated into today, it was bad enough in the last few years of my employment. I don’t buy the paper becuase it is oriented towards what its readers want to read … fair enough but a valid reason to ignore it when you do not share their views.

Mind you it is a welcome contrast to the local body elections where the material read as if everybody had used the same script writer or followed a single template.

If politicians want me to be better informed it is up to them … its my vote they are after.

Pallitive care will take second place to euthanasia JB – as it will have to be seen as being less humane – by those rationalising euthanasia.

Later, funding so that it is ‘done right’ will be never ending — it will start with money being spent on ‘elderly consultation’ the training of local GP’s, nurses, healthcare workers, councillors ect to ‘answer their concerns’.

Ironicly – death is about to take on a life of it’s own. Directed by government workers.

It is interesting to note that Penny Bright parrots the views of Vinny Eastwood in regards to John Key. This guy has weird views on many things including the “fact” that Allan Hubbard was set up so the government could steal his money and conspiracy theories on 911. He had a you tube channel which aired a “documentary” on John Key espousing the same views that Penny trolls here. For someone who grows dairy grass for a living – and gets lower dairy payouts – it wouldn’t be too much of a strain on your limited abillities to try and grow stoners grass. And that’s probably why you are a ‘drug choice’ advocate – to pay for your basic Amish lifestyle.

Correction…..I grow sheep & beef grass for a very modest living. Also most “stoners’ grass” worthy of smoking is grown under lights in commercial buildings, usually by gangs using stolen power.

The days of the old “NZ Green” hippy weed grown on the river banks & the middle of maize paddocks are well gone.
