I stand by my claim that Giordano Bruno was a matyr to science and scientific truth . Yes much of his writings were more philosophical but the facts remain that the effects of burning at the stake and the church forcing Galileo to recant was to force scientific enquiry and endeavor to the north .

In tight of these facts of history its utterly fatuous to suggest Islam originated the idea of the Dark Ages given the Church and its Holy Inquisition in control .

P. S Rather late in the pierce the Church rather belatedly under Pope John Paul 11 rehabilitated Giordano Bruno.

Actually it’s solid history.

And that is not. The “Dark Ages” are the period from the fall of the Roman Empire to about 10-1100 AD. And they were cause in part by the fall of Rome and the destruction of most of the Byzantine Empire by Islam.

Shifting the start of the “Dark ages” to 1600 would not be accepted as valid history by any mainstream historian.

It’a a myth.

The dark ages is referred more in a figurative sense i.e keeping free and independent thought in a straight jacket . This is in effect what the mediaeval church did and achieve from about 1000 AD on until effectively broken by the Age Of Enlightenment ( late 17th Century )
To blame this all on Islam is utter rubbish.!

The Inquisition in fact began in 12th Century France to combat various sectarian heresies and rapidly expanded thereafter

Not really. It;s a modern secular myth that does not correspond to the reality.

Do you think I could be sued for defamation for pointing out the Garpll the leader of Christian heritage was busy fiddling little kids at the same time he was pushing Christian morals on the rest of us ? Was his offending justified when he emailed his supporters claiming that the 12 year old was gagging for it?
Can I be sued because I referenced the present level of support of the conservative to that of christian heritages pre discovery of hypocrisy? The main message I was conveying was >5% being the amount of support that any such party has historical amassed since mmp was instituted. I was also establishing that pushing Christian values has had historically a demonstrable level of hypocrisy behind it.. it is not an actionable offense as far as I am aware to reference proven fact .

True, but the fact that they have un-done very little of the previous Labour governments policies, leaves me in no doubt that they can be rightly called Labour-lite.

In addition to the Electoral Finance Act which is the only one I can recall, what Labour policies has National rescinded over the past two terms?

Fletch claimed that the Dark Ages were caused by Islam. The ACTUAL Dark Ages note. And on that score, he is not entirely wrong. Islam did play a role in it’s destruction of the Byzantine Empire, which was scientifically very advanced.

No, what you did was change the meaning of the Dark Ages to something that suits your claim, but which is historically wrong. No mainstream secular historian claims that the Dark Ages extended into the Medieval period. That is pseudo-history.

I’m not the Kiwiblog policeman, Griff. I was just trying to give you a hint that you drift towards writ territory when you use the name of another political party with a very similar name in a post about the defunct party that was Graham Capill’s. The reasons Capill went to prison are widely known.

I’m not trying to warn you, but to alert you that, in my opinion, you could get yourself in big-dollars trouble. Surely you have noted how many politicians are quick to resort to legal remedies.

Dark ages was from the fall of the western Roman empire circa 450 ad to the rise of the the rise of the Italian Renaissance in the 14th century or roughly the 5th to 13th centuries. sometimes it restricted even more to 5th–10th century.

Most historians rightly restrict it to the 5th to 10th centuries due to the advances in terms of culture, education and technology in the Middle Ages.

you ignore factors such as the sacking and destruction of Constantine Noble under the Fourth crusade in 1204. It was the first time its formidable walls were breached . it left the Byzantine Empire severely weakened and vulnerable to the final assault by the Ottomans’s in 1453.The Fourth crusaders acted quite mercilessly in their sacking and destruction It’s decline and fall had little do to whether it was scientifically advanced or not .

The progress of science had more to do with the breaking of of the Church’s monopoly and power and the growth of the secularism with separation of Church and state etc.

Nothing to do with Islam causing anything in fact.

The Renaissance is another interesting era. many scholars attribute its much of its rise to the fall of Constantinople 1453 AD. many scholars and works being refugees to the west from Islam.

Islam, the religion of peace and tolerance, the destruction of western values,the occupation of Christian lands and genocide……..

…….constant theme with that lot. happening all over again.

I suppose the Christian Right have done a revision job of the first And other crusades telling us how benevolent and compassionate the crusaders in fact were sparing e.g the jews who had gathered in the main synagogue which was torched on the sacking of Jerusalem in 1099 AD

Issues that are the direct responsibility of the Prime Minister
This entails the provision of free and frank advice and support on constitutional issues relating to the conduct of executive government – including during elections and transitions between administrations – and issues associated with the operation of the Cabinet system.

Issues that arise across the full range of government business

DPMC provides a continuous flow of advice to the Prime Minister on major and daily issues, along with oversight of wider government activity and access to information and assessments. DPMC also works directly with Ministers on specific issues. The Deputy Prime Minister plays a lead role on behalf of the Prime Minister over a number of the government’s policy programmes and DPMC supports him on some of these matters from time to time.

DPMC works with central agencies to draw together departments in support of the Government’s priorities, to focus agencies on providing options for action, to ensure implementation of agreed programmes and policies, to drive for enhanced agency performance, and to deal effectively with issues which affect the nation. DPMC also provides the secretariat support for decision making by the Cabinet and its committees.

Administrative support to the Prime Minister

It’s called history. Never pleasant. The crusaders fought for what they believed in,as do the Muslims. You have to decide whose side you’re on. History is not over. The old enemy is the current one.

Talking of revisionism and Jerusalem ,cultural marxists always talk of the slaughter of the Muslims and Jews when the city was captured.That is an unfortunate feature of most medieval wars,even up to Napoleon and modern times.

But they never talk of the fact that when Jerusalem fell in 1187 after hostage negotiations some 11 to 12000 Christians were sold in slavery by Saladin the merciful. Nothing’s changed. But we must keep up the pretence that the enemy are nice guys.

New Zealand doesn’t recognise Palestine as an independent state, and the last two NZ Ambassadors to Israel also maintained diplomatic relations with the West Bank (through the Palestine Authority as we don’t recognise Hamas)

What advantage is gained by rejecting the accreditation of the NZ Ambassador?

Ha’aretz reports: “When the Foreign Ministry heard this, officials informed Curr that this violated diplomatic protocol. They noted that since the Oslo Accords, Israel had firm rules that forbade a foreign ambassador to be credentialed to both Israel and the PA, and that unless his “dual credentials” were canceled, he could not serve as ambassador to Israel.”

NewZealand decides to flout that rule (fair enough) so Israel decides not to validate his credentials (fair enough).

I too am a supporter of Israel in their struggle against the Islamist terrorists but they have overstepped the mark with this action. Why should we pay for two diplomats when we could quite reasonably get by with none.

Coupled with the incident a few years back when they were caught out trying to obtain NZ passports using stolen identities I suggest that a tit for tat response involving their representation here would not be unwarranted.

Did you read the article that you linked? The author describes the Oslo Accords as being a breached agreement with no legal standing and uses Cyprus as an example to demonstrate that diplomatic recognition of the PA isn’t incompatible with maintaining good diplomatic relations with Israel.

Yes I did read the article.
It is an opinion piece.
The other side of the coin is that the others (Including the current government of Israel) are of the opinion that the Oslo accords are still (legally) in force.

I think Israel is in its right to refuse the credentials of the NZ ambassador.
Should it have done so?
That is a matter of opinion.

I read the background in your link. You do realise that we only maintain a consulate in Tel Aviv & the ambassador to Turkey who is normally resident in Ankara covers both posts.

TVNZ’s Hosking likened the policewoman awaiting sentence in the Queenstown taxi-driver abuse case to “dregs of society” in Hosking’s 7 Sharp show tonight.

This was pretty one-sided. The woman was off duty, and pissed when she abused the Malaysian Indian taxi driver. Hosking’s side kick mentioned that she had taken some sort of medication as well as alcohol, but Hosking quickly turned it to ridicule by talking about race pills or some such.

Why would Hosking want to influence the sentence? That doesn’t see fair to me when the police woman’s whole future is at stake. I can understand the ethnic Indian reporter TVNZ sent down to interview the driver being upset, but what set off Hosking?

If Hosking puts on some idiotic performance when he’s pissed, let’s hope some corner of the MSM gives him the same treatment.

Hosking is a bit of a disaster all round, in my opinion. In his political panels, he let people talk over each other and generally had fuck all control.

Kiwi taxi drivers have been taking borax from pissed customers for about a century, but our overseas drivers obviously have thinner skins.

There is no reference that I can see in the text to a slush fund.
Can someone enlighten me as to why then such wording has been used in the headline?
Even the actual story has a different header.

Years ago ,late ’90’s ,the CHCH press and the rest of the nations’ media did it over some white yoik hitting a black man one afternoon Ugly and nasty ,can;t be condoned.But from the media reaction you’d swear there’d been a lynching. Led the TV news, front page news etc etc commentaries, the works.

Around the same there was a stoush in some shithole Wellington neighbourhood between the state house dwelling “tangata whenevers” and some refugees ,nasty racist stuff. Media reaction……page 3 ,nothing to see here move along please.

You see only whites can really be racist or called to account.

What an interesting US Open this year. The tennis world is guaranteed a new grand slam winner out of Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic – fantastic. With the final coming up mid to late morning NZ time – I wouldn’t know who to pick. That being the case I’m just going to go with Nishikori for no better reason than he beat Novak Djokovic in the semis, which could be considered a bigger win than Marin beating Roger in three.

I’m also biased to see a player than can return and rally beat players who rely heavily on serving their opponent off the court.

I think Kei has the better story – lost round one to a qualifier the year before, marathon five setters, taking out Djokovic, coming back from surgery, first Japanese to win a grand slam – he leads Cilic head-to-head 5-2 for what that’s worth. They are both the perfect peak age for an elite player to enter the winner’s circle – age 24 and Cilic 25.

It was going to happen one day that the tennis kings would be dethroned entirely from a final – they did well to make their run last as long as it has. Bloody Nadal and injuries – it’s all his double fault !!
