Actually, being against asset sales could be seen as “conservative”, from the point of view that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Or, if you don’t need to sell it and it’s going to make you more money to keep it, why sell? However that does not mean that conservatives would be against asset sales, just that they’d need a good reason for it.

What was wrong with the Conservative Party wasn’t their stance on asset sales, it was the fact the only person that was really seen in the media representing them was Colin Craig, making it seem like a one man party whose sole aim was to get Colin into Parliament. He should have just joined the National Party if that’s what he wanted.

Edited to add: Colin Craig also said some very dorky things, even without his comments on the moon landing. The first prime one was being a Christian but not going to church. That was just weird.

In theory, yes. But my point was more about Red’s definitions of terms like ‘conservative’ or ‘Right Wing’, which do not seem to have any consistency at all, beyond whatever suits his argument on a given day.

Why are so many services that should be run by free enterprise run or controlled by the state?

These people are bleeding capitalism to death.

Further to this, Red, there’s a strong case to be made that the way left-wing parties (and right-wing parties) in New Zealand want to bleed capitalism is also a way of keeping it alive. Redistributive welfare and labour laws, for example, ensure that things don’t get so bad for those at the bottom that they would demand anything very different – and at the same time, keep them dependent on the same state that maintains and reasserts the basic assumptions of the economic system.

I’m in a pretty tiny minority on this opinion, though. The NZ left would likely be unimpressed with me questioning hard-won welfare and labour legislation, and the NZ right being unimpressed with me questioning the economic system they’d prefer to see unfettered.

Which would be good if it were true, except that the CP had almost zero policies in that area, in fact zero moral policies at all as far as I could tell. Beyond the anti-smacking law the CP had nothing at all to say on moral issues, and no policy.

So, I get back to my view that far from being a real Conservative party, let alone anything remotely Christian, the CP was in reality was just re-fried NZF.

None of Shawn’s comments are worth responding to because he is a worthless troll whose only argument is to misrepresent the arguments of others. He’s been reminded of this countless times but is apparently unable to stop himself. So fuck him. he can say what he likes, it doesn’t matter as it is almost invariably nothing more than cowardly lies.

Same as the equally prolific troll Grief, who has a like problem- the only argument he can make is to totally misrepresent my views.

And no matter how often I try and correct them, they’re responses show no sign that they have understood what I have said.

Fuck ’em, they’re both worthless cowardly trolls whose behaviour suggests rank insanity and therefore any future reasoned and serious response is a waste of time and effort. I’m someone who learns from my mistakes.

That would be the fringe far Right Ryan. Even ACT supports some welfare and economic regulations.

The only people on the Right advocating unregulated and unfettered capitalism are libertarians. And their party was such a monumental failure it had to be retired, without having ever got anywhere near Parliament.

Real Conservatives are closer to the view that capitalism is good, when restrained to some degree, and it’s excesses tamed in service of the primacy of the family.

NZ’s version of capitalism is crippled and hobbled by big govt and socialism, and it’s not capitalism at all when it is so suffering. Just do the fucking maths for chrissakes. $90 billion from a taxpayer force of less than 2 million? How the fuck does that work???

What do you think is the end game of steadily rising debt (currently at $70 billion) that is really just an admission that we’re living way beyond our means.

I was a major sponsor for a charity that raised over $120,000 for kids with cancer. I donated over $25,000 to various other charities last financial year. I am on the PTA for my kids school. All of my staff get 2 days a year paid leave if they want to do community work. I have given to families in need here in Christchurch a few fridges and other appliances that I had spare that I could have sold. I sponsored my nieces school entrepreneur project (that was very successful too I would add).

I am dammed sure that I have made a genuine and positive difference to peoples lives. I am also sure that for all of the shit that you spout you achieve nothing that make a genuine positive impact on anyones lives. You can wank on all you like about making change but I have yet to see you show anything that you have done that makes a real difference.

And the reason I don’t use my name on blogs is that I know very well that idiots like you and your ilk would try and damage my business because I have right leaning views and have been successful. There is nothing you lot like less than that.

Having been born in 68, I don’t really know what the moral standards of the 50’s were like, so can’t comment. You could be right with that last sentence in why people support them – but not about why they were formed.

I could have been a supporter of the Conservative Party, since I have a blog called NZ Conservative and I wanted to promote conservatism in NZ after I changed my political views a number of years back. I would have been prime recruiting material. I have many friends who voted for the Conservative Party, yet I could never bring myself to do so because I strongly suspected that they were conservative in name only.

I don’t even know if I’m a real conservative any more anyway. All that stuff on England and English just leaves me cold. I had an argument/conversation with another conservative blogger on his website a while back, and this guy was getting all unhappy because one of the ACT party posters had the Chinese language on it. And then another ranting post about something in the paper about supporting multilingual students at school. You’d think the world was ending.

I do think the smacking legislation should be modified, as it is, it’s overly intrusive over punishment of children. I also think that redefining marriage was a mistake. However I’m not too worried about all of this because of what I’m hearing on talk-back – these sorts of issues will be reversed because of the inherent conservatism of NZ’landers. The hosts seem far more conservative to me now. It’s weird, I don’t know if I’ve changed, or if they have.

Interesting comment. For what it’s worth I reckon that conservatism as practised by the Tories in England in 19th Century England has less chance of being resurrected in NZ than the Moa. Although we, as Kiwis, share much of our heritage with GB 12000 miles & two centuries have seen us develop our own understanding of politics.

We are a socialist nation….”I’m okay & bugger the rest” is not our way & never has been in my lifetime. The attitudes of our parents were shaped by the hardship they endured during the Great Depression & they were determined that their offspring wouldn’t suffer the same.

A true Conservative political movement will never appeal to many other than those who inhabit the lunatic fringe & even that is divided. Witness Shawn who is a financially liberal social conservative & Baity who is an authoritarian nut who wants to force his version of Singapore on us all while he wallows in his money bin.

That depends naaska on definitions of “Conservative” which are, like all political definitions, subjective.

Mine is just the mainstream post-war conservative Right, which has largely dominated Western politics since that time in both Europe, the US and NZ.

Beyond a few general principles I think it is virtually impossible to talk about “true” anything with regards to political definitions, let alone detailed policies. It’s all too subjective.

Thanks for that. Only you don’t really know that. I’ve not been talking politics that much recently as I’ve been far more interested in what’s been happening internationally. I could just be very good at putting out an impression!

A true conservative movement would not upend time honoured traditions in the country. It could gradually change them, but it wouldn’t wipe them out overnight. Theodore Dalrymple convinced me of that when he was talking about welfare and what to do about it, even though he saw it as destructive. He thought it would be cruel to turf people off long-term welfare dependency if that was all they had known. It would be better to change it through active discouragement of new people coming on board. A true conservative, I think, would prefer this method because anything else could lead to violent social upheaval.

They are just my views Mike.

As to a growing appetite for them, yes and no. National has won three elections in a row, and I define the Nats as small-c conservative. Mainstream conservative/Right parties are in power here, in Aus, in Canada, in the UK, almost in the US again, and in Germany, amongst many other countries.

The degree of social conservatism varies within these parties, but I am far more tolerant of both Classical Liberalism and diversity on the Right than Red is.

I don’t know any “true” conservatives who think that, and I know of none who have advocated anything like that. Especially Christian conservatives.

No. That is a libertarian policy.

Some on the far Right advocate that, but they are a distinct minority. Mainstream conservatives, who are arguably more “true” than those on the fringe, accept the basic idea of welfare, the only debate being about how best to run and manage it.

I know of no mainstream conservative party in the West that wants, or has ever wanted, to abolish welfare entirely.

No. Conservative means conservation.

A wise lecturer once said to me that conservatives are conservative because they have more to conserve.

But it goes beyond material values, they’re minor.

Conservatives want subjective values like discipline, ethics, charity and love to flourish, while taking maximum advantage of the scientific advances.

That’s where conservatives come from.

Progressives operate from an inaccurate base mate. They misinterpret both the motives of their conservative opponents but also the drivers behind the current state which they seek to move, plus the drivers behind those who feed them their progressive ideals.

They’re not only wrong, they’re wrong, wrong and wrong again. That’s the political battlefield nasska.

Not really Mike. National has in fact made changes to the last govt’s policies. While it accepted some policies, like WFF, it has also pursued changes, such as welfare reform and labour law reform, not to mention partial asset sales, that are a real departure from the Clark years.

I think it was about 8 years ago that I came across the final thing that turned me off libertarianism for good.

Peter Cresswell had posted a huge list of all the government departments and agencies and whatnot that Libertarians would abolish “by lunchtime” if they ever got into power. I remember reading that list and thinking, all those people out of work at once. It would be mayhem!

And then I thought that libertarians were bonkers, that the disruption that that sort of thing could cause would be potentially catastrophic to a society… If that’s what libertarianism leads to, I wanted no part of it.

When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkers saying that they wouldn’t feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean, it’s not as if she’d have to reverse the bloody thing!

It’s quite sad to read that many of the pillow biters over on the standard really hate John Key and what he stands for. The intensity of the hatred is quite scary. We have been told to to be wary of the IS undermining our society however I believe that some of these left wing activists are more of a concern.

routes and services are being disconnected to rural centres to bankrupt their economies and force the populations into major centres where they can be more easily controlled. In a small nation like NZ this will look obvious as time goes by but the agenda will be ignored esp by the media as small centres are discontinued over the decade.

Yes Smith is caught. About time the POLICE got it right. This happened because the POLICE convicted him under a false name and the POLICE system, when checked as part of the passport application, failed.
