Lucia – you’ll be interested to know that my family and I will be getting the full Polish Christmas Eve treatment in a few hours time. Action stations at 4pm. In keeping with the culture Babca will not stop cooking – and we are expected to eat it all!

I know it’s the season of goodwill to all men, but can we make an exception for that slap-headed twat, Philip Smith, who wants to waste taxpayers’ money on judicially reviewing decisions not to allow him to be interviewed, and not to return his hairpiece?

A Merry Christmas to all Kiwibloggers. Interesting to note that over on WO Cameron Slater starts his Christmas Day with a beautiful tribute to the Virgin and Christ Child, whereas on KB DPF resolutely sticks with the wholly secular, Snoopy’s Christmas.

It would have been a nice generous touch if DPF were prepared to acknowledge just why it is that Christmas holds such a special place in our history and culture.

It ain’t because of Snoopy.

Well, I always know that Christmas in near when I hear ‘Snoopy’s Christmas’ played for the first time in the season. Mercifully, this year I have only heard it once, in Pak’nSave a few weeks ago.

In New Zealand Christmas has a variety of flavours. One of the strengths of New Zealand is it’s relative tolerance for different views, religions and ways of celebrating.

I passed out waiting for them.

In Mangalore in South India attended a wonderful out door mass at St. Sebastian’s Bendur.Truly an impressive and colourful occaison even though it was conducted in Konkani the language of my wife’s family and the main liturgical language of the relatively large Catholic community in Mangalore ( by India’s standards about 30% of the population )

A very colourful and impressive occaison whether the vestments of the priests , the robust singing of carols by the choir and at least 3,000 congregation , the colourful lights lighting up the fascinating Portuguese Baroque facade of the church including the external belfry towering astride the church,

The Mass was climaxed by the tolling of the bells , fire works and a medley of carols.Truly capturing the heart of the Chrstmas message of Joy and Good will to all people.

At the conclusion my wife, our family and hers all retired to for a fabulous feed at a local resteraunt featuring Mangalore and Malabar curries and other delicacies .As a matter of interest Christmas gifting is unknown in these parts as it is in especially e.g Southern European band Iberian countries .Also in keeping with say Central Europe Christmas Eve is the main focus of celebration.

We are about 9 hours behind NZ .It’s 9.11 am and for Christians itt’s day off but typical of India I business as usual as the hum and throb of the highway nearby suggests. Today with family will be more low key with a shared dinner similar to home. Christmas here gives one a sense of perspective and not the more bloated secular fest it’s become in New Zeld

Are you in America? Hope your full on Polish Christmas Eve was as fantastic as the expectations. I’m a long way from being able to do that sort of thing myself. Mum’s not really up for it and between my brother and I, it’s nowhere near what a Pole would consider a proper Christmas Eve. When my sister visits from Australia, we have more of a chance. Any way, I’m making up for it by spreading Christmas celebrations out to several days. 🙂

Lucia Maria, thank you and it’s wonderful to see how Poles provide another fantastic example of celebrating Christmas in their own special way .

Remember at the end of the day Christmas is about the spiritual message and journey.There are plenty of more humble and poorer folk here in Manglaore and elsewhere who merely turn up for the Christmas service and soak in the “real ” message behind it all.

Thats all that is required .

PS Households here prefer to adorn there homes with lighted Bethlehem paper Stars of varying sizes and colours .

Magical at night and a potent symbol of Christmas .!
