US job growth is Texas job growth

This graph from TPNN shows how all the employment growth in the US has occurred in the state of Texas.

Texas is a repudiation of Barack Obama’s foolish proclamation that “we cannot drill our way to low oil prices”.

On the downside, things won’t look so good there after the price fall, but whatever Texas wills till be a better place to live than most any other state.

As someone once said –

‘When William Barrett Travis wrote in 1836 that he would never surrender and he would have Victory or Death, what he was really saying was that he and his men were forged of a hotter fire. They weren’t your average everyday men. Well, that is what it means to be a Texan. It meant it then, and that’s what it means today. It means just what all those people North of the Red River accuse us of thinking it means. It means there’s no mountain that we can’t climb. It means that we can swim the Gulf in the winter. It means that Houston is bigger and Dallas is richer and Alpine is hotter and God vacations in Texas. It means that come Hell or high water, when the chips are down and the Good Lord is watching, we’re Texans by damned, and just like in 1836, that counts for something- so If you are sitting wondering what the Hell I’m talking about, this ain’t for you. But if the first thing you are going to do when the Good Lord calls your number is find the men who sat in that tiny mission in San Antonio and shake their hands, then you’re the reason I wrote this, and this is for you’.

As much as I like Texas, Texans (they elected Ron Paul 4 times), their commitment to liberty and their high gun ownership rate. It is stretching it to shoehorn this into a “the right are better at economic management ” meme.

Texas has benefitted imensely from sustained high oil prices which as we know have collapsed over recent months. Friends from the Lone Star State tell me it is carnage over there – economic activity has dried up. Let’s see this graph one year henceforth.

Forbes magazine covered job growth in Texas in an article published in November 2014.

Key points of the article:

1. 413,00 new jobs created in 12 months.
2. Low taxes.
3. Light regulation.
4. Major corporates from the non-energy sector such as Toyota are moving their headquarters to Texas creating 4,000 jobs.
5. Texas is expected to have the fastest job growth rate in the next five years.

Are the GOP smart enough to get the message across to voters that lower taxes and less regulation are good thing? Re jobs Hillary Clinton doesn’t think businesses create them.

Texas has done well, but that graph alone doesn’t give a complete picture. California (with its hopeless government) added 1.5 million jobs over a shorter time period from 2010 to 2015; after being hit heavier in 2008-2010. The growth in the rest of the US likely contributed to Texas growth.

Oil is good business if you have it under the ground to extract – but that’s more about good luck than the genius of Rick Perry.

Unless of course you believe he prayed to the Good Lord and the oil just started flowing.

Wisconson is going Ok too, thanks to Governor Scott Walker-

In Wisconsin, as governor, Walker rolled up his sleeves and went to work against progressivism. . . and he did the same on stage in Iowa. With sleeves rolled up, as he marched across the stage, Walker took on the purveyors of big government head-on, challenging them, blasting their failed policies, and in his speech he explained how he took on big government in Wisconsin, and won. He touted a long list of conservative reforms he’s pushed through in blue Wisconsin, successfully turning that State around, so that the folks in Wisconsin could leave the recession behind, while the rest of the country still broils in a weak economy, with a record number of people not in the workforce.

I just did a quick tax calculation..

100k a year in NZ as a single dude, no kids – 74k after tax. same calc for texas – 72k after tax.

the yanks do have some deductions though..

100k a year in NZ as a single dude, no kids – 74k after tax. same calc for texas – 72k after tax.

the yanks do have some deductions though..

Did you include medical insurance and a super contribution into your equation ?
Both need to be added onto the tax rate in the usa to have a valid comparison with NZ’s socialist systems benefits.

yeah the site included medicare and social security.

that state taxes arent huge. even in states where you pay no state tax, you still pay a decent whack.

As you (finally) discovered yesterday, DPF, summing amounts which include negative numbers can lead to bullshit statistics. It’s not quite as stark, but you get a similar result when you use California.

Arguing that all of job growth is from Texas, is stupid when you can use the same method to show that somewhere around ~40% of job growth comes from California.

Oilfield services (OFS) firms such as Schlumberger are the unsung workhorses of the oil industry. They do most of the heavy lifting involved in finding and extracting oil and gas. They are far less well-known than the oil firms that hire them, but immensely lucrative. Schlumberger, with headquarters in Paris and Houston, earned profits of $5 billion on revenues of $40 billion last year. Its market capitalisation has risen fourfold in the past decade, to $91 billion. That is bigger than several international oil companies, including ENI ($82 billion), Statoil ($75 billion) and Conoco-Philips ($71 billion).

Yea, you could have say, 30 states going downhill and 2-3 doing well, and use a graph like this to show that one of those was doing “all” the work, including the other good ones in the average of the rest.

so hj. California is 11th in State demographics in terms of population density. Which sits 246.1 sq/mi
Auckland is approx 3000 sq/mi
The population density of the United States is relatively low compared to many other developed countries due to its size and the advent of modern transportation during its settlement. For example, the population density of the U.S. is one twelfth that of the Netherlands, and one fifteenth that of South Korea
It’s 4000 sq/km in Auckland and 1sq/km in the rest of the nation.
It’s crazy. Kiwis pretty much stop all development and then everybody turns up to the single local attraction. And it’s shoulder to shoulder on the established beaches because the Greenies want to keep the ‘untouched’ beaches for themselves.
Build more roads! Which have some beautiful open spaces and world tourist attractions.
I get in my car and it drives itself to Yosemite and Tahoe.
Milford Sound and Te Anau would be the equivalents in NZ and would attract the tourist dollars from the Northern Hemisphere
I live in the foothills of a mountain in California.
And I think we’ve got the lowest unemployment rate in the world. Andrew Little better put his thinking cap on.

I’m pretty sure I’ve done work for people with different political views than my own. As long as they pay.

Surprising to see you come out as an anti business, anti entrepreneur guy.

I guess slim dotcrim creates feelings in others that they themselves don’t understand…?

It is my opinion as somebody who has worked for both a service company and an energy company that oilfield service companies are leeches on the industry. They overcharge and at least in my experience they do not deliver a quality product in a reasonable timeframe, then have the cheek to ask for a variation to put their prices up (with the threat that they’ll demobilise their crew mid-well if you don’t).

Schlumberger no longer make most of their money as a service company.

Fair to criticise the graph as poor use of stats (impacts of negatives on the average) but the growth is aided by the lack of restrictions. Job destroyers like the RMA would be an anathema to Texans.

Full time employment often include insurance.

Factor in what you can get for a $ in the US, food, power, clothing, housing, will all be way less in the US than in NZ. So you would have to factor in at least a 10-20% discount [many times much more, like fuel at 1/3-1/2 the price]. It is not a straight across correlation when you consider the “cost of living”.

Don’t mess with Texas.
