As all of their main social policies are just about identical, the one claim National have that differentiates them from Labour is that they see themselves as “competent” and do Socialism more efficiently and with slightly less waste than Labour. That point of difference is starting to crack and ring hollow now after recent incidents and when you see government departments spending like drunken sailors – what exactly the point of National?

I have a 10 minute hearing in the HC Auckland at 9:00 am Tuesday 24 February if any lawyers who comment on KB think I should be paying one of them rather than represent myself. The former lawyer who has recently spent $80k to a dodgy lawyer is now representing himself as well. He is also considering suing his former lawyer.

I am happy for any on KB to go along and report things how they see them. Below is an interesting quote from the other party.

“I had great difficulty to get barristers to act for me even when I had cash to pay, but now I act for myself.”

Any useless lawyer that says I should throw away good money after bad an pay for a lawyer is totally incompetent. Sadly, such lawyers can end up as a judge.

‘Communisim be stealth’ were Key’s words a decade ago. And in that decade not one speech has been made by National on Freedom and Liberty. Instead all of Huluns polices have been kept. The Ministry of Wimmin’s Batteries remains….public service is still choka block…..

I walked through parts of it and it looks like downtown Mogadishu or Karachi. Women wearing sacks on their heads, goats on the lawn, minarets wailing – what the hell is going on in this country.

Even worse, these people have no intention to integrate in our society, they either want to live isolated in their community, or – when their number increases – they expect the locals to change their habits, traditions and culture to adapt to their culture (think halal meat or the banning of pork on school menus).

Just like Europe, old neighborhoods that used to be very safe are nowadays becoming no-go areas for Kiwis.

It is beyond comprehension… We were never asked if we want to change our long-rooted culture but we are only “bombarded” with opinions that this experiment is a good thing. Unless you live in one of the elite Auckland suburbs, get out now while you still can!

There is a bill before a Select Committee which will enable the Police to recover the cost of police vetting, but charities and other groups are kicking up a stink that it would be a significant financial drain on them. It was indicated that I should be police vetted with respect to an organisation I do things for but I pointed out that my work and those of some others did not warrant police vetting. The response was effectively that it was being done at no cost so why not?

So I think a charge is warranted to put some brake on the number of requests. It should be no more than needed, and there needs to be an incentive at the Police end to ensure the service is provided efficiently. The problem with a ‘user pays’ monopoly service is there is a lack of incentive to provide it efficiently.

Given that the film industry is extremely footloose, the tax concessions (not subsidies) to major film makers are a very good deal economically.

It’s to do with tourism that they get tax breaks. They advertise NZ. More bang for the buck spent than Tourism NZ could ever do.

You are right that the film industry is extremely footloose. It follows the state handouts around the world, and suckers compete to offer the highest.

Tax concessions are subsidies. Here’s a definition from the respected business web site Investopedia:

DEFINITION of ‘Subsidy’

A benefit given by the government to groups or individuals usually in the form of a cash payment or tax reduction. The subsidy is usually given to remove some type of burden and is often considered to be in the interest of the public.

The fallback position of supporters of film subsidies is that they boost tourism, and Jackson fans have come to NZ, no question. But the tax concessions are still subsidies.

About Immigration: I am in Christchurch.
When I married my wife she was the only not white, middle class person on this quiet street.

Here comes Islam. A middle Eastern guy, from up the road, pulls a car beside my driveway to sell it. They like to sell their cars outside nice homes. But he was over the driveway. he was smoking cigarettes. nervous, and moving fast. A couple of his fellow traders delivered him some tyres, and wheels.

I got the little beaten up Rav out and pointed it at his car. I said you ‘ get that car sales offa my street’
This fellow looks at me , and the home here, and says ‘ do you feel safe” I said “yes look at my neighbour”
My neighbour had come across to look. He is Tongan maybe 16 stone.
The car sales went away. The Tongan neighbour said ” its good”
I said ‘no its not that stuff will just take over another street’.

Not at all. They like being in Wellington, but they are dependent to a large extent on the film financiers and distributors who don’t give a shit where movies are made as long as they get the best deal.

The Hobbit trilogy, which probably generated about $1 bn in production expenditure in NZ and which will draw in hundreds of millions of international tourist dollars for years to come, come easily have been made in Scotland or Ireland instead.

Wouldn’t that have been a triumph for National socialism?

So its really a zero sum as if the film didnt come here it wouldnt get spent here and the GST would be in the Govt hands in the first place?

If they bring economic benefit to the country then they get my thanks.

In saying that, it gets fucking old listening to dumb ass statements like “we pay dean barker millions”. team nz raise 120 million or so, the govt kicks in 30 millions of that. maybe the wages come from the other 90 million and we pay for the fucking sails or something.

the opinion is on par with “all blacks should be made to work on farms!!”

as for axing barker – good move. the two young guys team nz have are just weapons. the sort who can deal to spithill at the start etc.

But the concessions granted for The Hobbit production were on the basis of experience of what LOTR had done for NZ in terms of job generation in film making and tourism. It wasn’t blind and it wasn’t hype.

You need to ask yourself if you would have been prepared to risk The Hobbit trilogy being made elsewhere. Because that is what would most probably have happened.

I’m beginning to think that the so-called “trickle down” for the whole of NZ from the taxpayer supporting the America’s Cup is about as reliable as the trickle down for the average Maori from the Tweaty settlements.

Might be great for the businesses around the viaduct, a few boatbuilders; and always fun for the Minister, etc getting a ride on the yachts and enjoying the hospitality 😉

Clearly The Lord of The Rings movies have encouraged huge tourism and awareness of NZ. I certainly don’t have a problem giving tax concessions when there is such a bonus as a result.

If there had not been a tax concession, the films may have been made elsewhere in the world and NZ would have missed out on any tax and the tourism benefits. Nor would there have been all those actors employed for many years.

It’s good business in this case.

It’s a matter of principle, rather than whether a particular subsidy works.

National is behaving life a socialist government, as the imminent handout to Team NZ will confirm. It’s not even a centre-right government, it’s a centre-left government.

This will help, Colville. Vernon Small, on Fairfax’s Stuff web site, on 30 October, 2010:

The extra $20 million subsidy for The Hobbit will be paid as a tax break on a pool of profits to be shared by actors and other workers on the films, including director Sir Peter Jackson, it is understood.

The Government has kept under wraps details of the extra cash incentive to Warner Bros, which comes on top of the 15 per cent subsidy worth about $65m on the budget for the two movies of about $670m.

Auckland has a smaller proportion of white people than most NZ cities and towns, but I don’t think it is as successfully diverse as stephieboy implies.

Auckland seems to be quite strongly ghetto-ised: Pacific Islanders and Maori in south Auckland, South Africans on the North Shore, Chinese in Howick (and many other parts of Auckland), Indians in Papatoe etc, etc. There appear to be areas of white flight in Auckland. Jewish graves are vandalised, and, like Christchurch, Auckland seems to have some Muslims with links and or sympathies with active Islam extremists.

Kyle (not Kyllie) Chapman, last heard of, was in Hamilton. He is, by the way, part-Maori. What is the RWR? I’ve lived in Christchurch for a long time, and have never heard of this acronym. The Harris gang seems to have faded away. They were tougher than the Mongrel Mob, but didn’t seem to descend to the latter’s depths. The Harris boys were tough kids whose parents had a small circus, and they were brought up handling lions and tigers.

Police case getting shonkier by the minute says wiki.
Don’t know about that.
Lundy was talking bankruptcy , the business was only breaking even, he still owed $100000 on it, there was onlt $20000 equity in the house, he was paying $600 a day interest on that wine venture, he said he would be able to use his wife’s insurance payout to clear his debts. Sounds like motive to me.
Re petrol consumption. Normal consumption for Lundy’s Ford Fairmont was 8 litres per 100 km on the open road and 13 km per litre around town.
After he filled the tank he traveled 65km around town, say 10 litres, then one trip to Palmy, according to him,150km = 12 litres.
So that adds up to 22 litres, yet he used well over 60 litres. How come?
If he drove to Palmy and back in the early morning as the Crown are now saying, there would be no need for him to drive fast .

Isnt Lundys aliby that he was in Petone at a certian time to call a hooker? so the window was only about 3 hours?

When I was at tech in Petone the trusty Mk 3 Gotina could do it in 1 1/2 hours in the early hours and traffic was light.

No speed cameras then 🙂

I can’t say I’m taking much interest in all this but I did see evidence reported regarding fuel consumption of Lundy’s Ford Crapmont and even 😯 the suggestion of it achieving 8 L/100 km!!! I would hazard to guess that the fuel consumption of the old Crapmont driven by Lundy at close to warp speed 4 as alleged by the coppers would be more likely in the region of about 50 L/100 km. I don’t know what the relevance of this is – is it because there is no evidence of him having gassed up anywhere???

At the Hamilton City Council Finance Committee meeting today Councillor Leo Tooman pointed out that we have too many golf clubs and bowling clubs and that most of them should be merged with other clubs and their history, identity and independence thrown away to form 1 or 2 bland and generic clubs. Also he hinted that members should pay higher membership fees so council can charge more for land rental. Guess because he thinks that access to these clubs should only be for the well off. Other money hungry councilors supported this. The crazy thing is that these same councilors are quick to support organizations they belong to and are just as quick to give support to their corporate buddies in the for of contracts to council for money wasting schemes.

Won’t it be great when the fresh review of the case finds that Robin is the killer on BOP, Then crown law will have even more egg on their face. Also the amount of compensation payable will be significantly more than what would have been if they had done the decent thing and paid him out at the time. Then they would not got into this mess of the so called “peer review” and shopping around for a more favourable conclusion!!

No need to get your knickers in a twist just because Amy Adams won’t have a bar of Binnie’s report.
A fresh review of the case will find, unlike Binnie, that David Bain was, without doubt, wearing his mother’s glasses on the night before the killings, and the reviewer, or reviewers, will be asking Mr Bain how the frame of those glasses came to be damaged less than 12 hours later, and how one lens from that frame came to be found in his brother’s room.
And that reviewer might also want to have a talk to David about those three bruises on his noggin. Could he really have got those bruises when that police officer pulled him into a recovery position after he fell backwards in his room?

A blog has pointed out that the Associated Press took a photo of Obama at the US-African Leaders Conference in Washington DC in August 2014. And what was he doing? Flashing the Islamic shahada sign with his hand. For those that don’t know, the shahada is a physical way of saying, “There is but one God and Muhammad is his messenger.”

And Obama is flashing it at this delegation.

The Associated Press took this astonishing photo as the African dignitaries joined Obama, who hosted the event, in a State Department auditorium for a group photograph. It was published in an article in Britain’s Daily Mail, and it was the only use ever of the photo.

The one-finger display is the distinctive Muslim gang sign: The index finger points straight up while the thumb wraps underneath and presses against the digital phalange of the middle finger. The remaining fingers are squeezed against the palm in order to highlight the extended forefinger. The extended finger is symbolic of the one-God concept of Muhammad and is understood by all believers to be a symbolic shahada, the Muslim affirmation of faith: There is but one God and Muhammad is his messenger.

Thus when believers stick their index finger in the air, they demonstrate they are partisans of Muhammad’s God concept. And they also affirm their belief in Muhammad’s claim he was the interface between God and man. They also demonstrate they are part of the umma, the exclusive transtribal supertribe of believers that Muhammad started 1,400 years ago.

I imagine any review might look closely at the actions of senior members of the investigation team such as Milton Weir, Peter Hentschel and Kim Jones and why they felt the need to mislead the jury over crucial elements of the crown case, maybe they didn’t feel that the actual evidence was particularly convincing and thought that the jury might “understand it better” if they lied and misrepresented the facts to them!

Re Lundy’s car. The official consumption figures for that model are 8 litres per 100 km on a road trip and 13 litres per 100 litres round town. He filled up just prior to going to that motel The tank held 68 litres and when he arrived back in Palmy it was virtually empty.
The reason that police officer drove it at speed was because the original theory was that Lundy drove to Palmy and back in around 3 hours. However they are now saying that drive took place in the early hours of the next morning, which would have given him considerably more time to complete it and therefore the fuel consumption may have been nowhere near as high.

The reviewer or reviewers will certainly want to know why David Bain lied about those glasses at the first trial and why he lied about them again when he was interviewed by Justice Binnie. And no doubt there will be questions asked about all those other lies that Bain told Binnie. For example he will no doubt be asked why he lied about those track pants.

I think on the contrary to the rubbish put up by Michael, the reviewer might like to look at the actions of Milton Weir in regards to the glasses and why he misrepresented crucial evidence to the jury in 1995, also not allowing the optometrists revised evidence to be put before the jury was just plain dishonest. Terry Van Turnhout also decided that he would keep to himself for 14 years that he had handled the glasses that morning. You would have to ask yourself why he would do that!

But I have to say if Joe is happy, then this announcement must meet the confidential terms of the JR settlement much of which is generally blanked under the OIA in the letter released by Adams and certainly confirms that the earlier ‘resolution’ was not undertaken in a defendable, robust, principled way. There would be no apparent reason for the new evidence not to be considered and I doubt that wasn’t part of the negotiations.

It is of no matter that Milton Weir pointed to what he thought was that lens in error, because it now turns out he did, in fact point to that lens, even though that is not where he found it, which was a few centimetres from where it is showing in photos.
What is important is that the lens from the glasses that David Bain was wearing to watch TV the night before was found in his brother’s room.
And van Turnhout’s relevation is of no importance either. He simply picked up the glasses to hand to David Bain at his request and then put them back down again. He did not bend the frame.

Maybe the Minister is telling porkies where she says in the above that she understands that Karam is comfortable with the decision. Despite of course his comments that the Government have not stuck with Simon Power’s undertaking. Pragmatism, the way of the world, just like the ‘new’ photos and other matters that will add significantly to the probability of innocence somewhere around 98%.

A ‘prominent New Zealander’ has lost name suppression in what is being reported as a sexual assault case, but the suppression may be subject to appeal so remains in place for another month.

A prominent New Zealander charged with indecent assault lost his bid for name suppression today.

But the man’s identity will remain protected for another month to allow him the chance to lodge an appeal.

The man denies the charges against him.

Heavy suppression orders cover the case, meaning the man cannot be identified, nor can his alleged victims or their ages.

The charges faced by the man, who elected trial by jury, can now be revealed.

He is facing 12 charges of indecent assault against two people including two representative charges.

The charges, which include allegations of touching the complainants on the breast, buttocks, groin and thigh, are punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

David Bain was wearing those glasses until he tried to kill his brother. He needed them to see to get round the house.
So we don’t know for sure how many of his family he shot when he was wearing those glasses and how many he shot we he wasn’t wearing them.

Best part of Weir’s evidence was when he told the Court that he had been ‘hounded out’ of the police and that some detectives referred to him as the ‘planter’ or some such similar thing. I guess if you plant something there should be a point to it, otherwise you end up needing to ‘hide’ evidence such as that of the optometrist.

I find it difficult to understand why there isn’t automatic name suppression unless and until there is a conviction.
And, if there is a conviction, it’s difficult to see why there should be name suppression, allowing a period for a possible appeal.
