Emergency Call Centre operator has been fired in Auckland much to the dismay of her colleagues, who are unhappy with her dismissal.

It seems that a caller dialed 111 from a mobile phone stating :
– I am depressed and lying on a railway line so that when the train comes I can finally meet Allah.

To which the call centre employee replied :
– Remain calm and stay on the line.

Thank you Minus – yes – I had missed those posts by Cameron Slater.

Always seemed somewhat peculiar to me that Cameron Slater is SO insistent that I should pay (disputed) rates, given that arguably I’ve made a more effective stand than most, in highlighting the ongoing failure of Auckland Council to comply with the statutory requirements arising from the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, the Local Government Act 2002, and the Public Records Act 2005?

Seems that there finally is some glacial and partial progress regarding transparency in Auckland Council spending on private sector consultants and contractors?

Unbelievable, however, in my view – that the Public Records Act was passed in 2005 and it’s now 2015?

See section 17 ….

(Perhaps it’s time for the Office of the Ombudsman to take over the responsibility of enforcing the ‘creation and maintenance’ of Public Records, and leave the National Office of the Archives to look after the ‘storage and maintenance’ of Public Records?)

Maybe – when it comes to the crunch – Cameron Slater simply doesn’t have the guts to make the ‘rates strike’ stand that cannot be ignored – when it comes to Auckland Council and their, in my view, ‘out of control’ spending?

Just saying …

Of course – I’d make this comment directly on his ‘WhaleOil’ blog – if Cameron Slater hadn’t ‘banned’ me?

I have been following the Chinese activities in the South China Sea with interest for a while. The Chinese claims have no foundation in international law nor in the maritime conventions to which they are signatories. This appears to mirror a previous policy enacted by a European nation during the late 1930s. This policy was called Lebensraum and was the Nazi German policy which resulted in extinction of Czechoslovakia as an independent nation and eventually the Second World War the following year. This present PRC activity appears to be a maritime equivalent of that policy. The issue for NZ is that when it all turns to rubbish in the South China Sea we are going to be impacted whether we like it or not. We live in and support a rules based international order and this is something that the PRC is seriously challenging in the South China Sea. We have to support that ruled based order because it us the basis of our current international and economic systems. This PRC challenge has the potential to destabilize that system especially within the Asia Pacific region. If, or probably when, that happens NZ will be dragged in whether we like it or not.
