Nothing wrong with borrowing for productive investment for the purpose of raising productivity and efficiency–such as infrastructure, capital goods, education.

Borrowing for speculation leads to asset inflation (and the risk of asset bubbles).

Cheap labor depresses wages and investment in new technologies. If you want to help the local workers, don’t import foreign ones. Let wages rise and force the business owners to innovate. (But if the owners make a breakthrough, the former workers may find themselves retraining for new lines of work.)

If welfare is poorly managed, it can create a sense of entitlement. The risk of failure and real poverty is a powerful motivator for a healthy society. As someone once said, “Protect men from folly and you end up with a nation of fools.”

Failure and the risk of destitution are necessary as primary motivators in society.

Can anybody remember whether Cameron does or does not claim to be a journalist? Because if he does, that obliges him to abide by the high professional standards that he (rightly) accuses Nicky Hager and others of failing to observe.

If there is really corruption going on at IRD then it should be exposed and the perpetrators held to account in the strongest of terms. But a proper journalist should get and give IRD’s as well as the aggrieved party’s side of the story, with IRD given a full opportunity to investigate and explain. Let’s see whether Cameron does so.

The trouble I believe Labour has got, and for quite some time now, is that we have stopped listening.

Since 08, I’ve dutifully listened to all manner of Labour leaders lambasting Key and National and because they seem to operate from no solid principles, they tie themselves up in all sorts of knots while doing so. Hence their repeated flip-flopping on policy and positions.

Labour and Little (and Goff, Shearer and Cunners before him) have clearly chosen to ‘bark at every passing car’ and appear on National Radio every weekday morning without fail – rather than pick their issues and responses more carefully. And, also I’d note, without any humour, without an ounce of levity – which were things that won huge numbers of NZ’ers to Lange’s cause, including me.

If middle NZ has taken the phone off the hook – well Labour only have themselves to blame.

Health Boards have taken on a fascist approach to life and this is just another manifestation of that.

I thought same thing when I saw it on TV last night. Obviously none of them ever played AD&D. Got out my dusty copy of the Player’s Handbook and read that a billhook does 2-8 damage against S-M opponents so that means the guy killed must have at best been a 1st Level Gang member with 1-6 HPs.

There is an interesting discussion on Leighton Smith re the immigration chaos in Europe at present. First hand accounts seem at odds with what we are fed by the MSM. Cameron is putting illegals up in hotels and giving them 35 pounds a week, much to the disgust of paying guests. People can no longer sell their homes in Calais because of marauding ‘refugees’.

This will eventually affect tourism to Europe as the immigrants spread to the favourite visitor destinations and make life unbearable for visitors. If weak leaders like Cameron are typical in Europe, then that area is doomed.

It’s actually more like a hobble that prevents the Government from fully explaining itself.

Often decisions about the treatment of a particular individual are made on the basis of details of that individual’s tax affairs, or medical history, or family circumstances. Therefore the Government cannot give a full explanation as to why they made that particular decision in that particular case, without revealing those details.

In such a case, do you think that the public’s right to a full explanation of the Government’s behaviour overrides the individual’s right for those details to be kept private?

I hope you all are prepared for the shortage of nurses to look after the your ailing relatives when nurses are sacked for not wearing masks and look to your own hygiene.
Masks have a limited effective life – those little white paper ones are good for 30 minutes at the most. The green paper ones a bit longer. The thing is, they get damp with the moisture of breathing, and become a hotbed for viruses et al.
Hand washing (and drying with paper towels) has been proven to be the most effective means of preventing cross-infection – all it takes is for everyone to do it 🙂 If you sneeze, and put your hand up to cover it, and then touch a door handle, any bacteria or virus can be left on that door handle to be picked up by the next person who touches it. Viruses can live outside the body for weeks . So – you could get a bellyache or a nasty cold or something worse.
Don’t blame nurses and doctors. The community is just as buggy as any hospital staff.

According to both Monmouth University and Wall Street Journal/NBC News polls, Trump is way out ahead of other Republican contenders.

A Monmouth University poll, also released Monday and with a somewhat larger sample size and smaller margin of error, shows Trump in first place, beating both Scott Walker and Jeb Bush combined.

The poll puts Trump in first place with 26% support. Second place Jeb Bush and third place Scott Walker sit at 12% and 11%, respectively.

That is what you call a blow out.

Neither Obama nor Kerry know the details of the deals between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran’s Envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi objected to the US Senate’s demand for being briefed about the contents of the recently signed roadmap of cooperation between Tehran and the IAEA, warning the UN nuclear watchdog to avoid disclosing its secret agreements with Tehran.

“The agreements signed between a member country and the IAEA are definitely secret and cannot be presented to any other country at all,” Najafi said in an interview with the Iranian students news agency on Saturday.

Referring to the discussions at the US Congress during which the US officials elaborated on the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany), he said, “The discussions revealed that the secret texts between Iran and the Agency have not even been provided to the US administration.”

“For the very same reason, they cannot be presented to the Senate members either,” Najafi added.

By the way, it has been pointed out that Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rouhani administration and Kerry’s chief counterpart in the nuclear deal negotiations, Mohammad Javad Zarif – well his son was best man at Kerry’s daughter’s wedding. Conflict of interest?

iMP – Roughly right – seems a big rumble between Colin and Cam is escalating. Cam’s Plan A was basically saying ‘you are kidding, mate – let me know when the documents are ready and I am happy to call round for them’ – he thought Colin would pull his horns in. This must have hurt Colin as it made him look ridiculous. So he got his lawyer to write to Cam – ‘you have not taken me seriously – the papers are on their way’. Then Colin dropped the ‘booklet’ and press release. IMO whether the book is defamatory depends on your general outlook on life. My immediate reaction was that a psychiatrist would have a lot to go on reading the booklet. Colin had the upper hand now. Time for Plan B – a two pronged attack, I am countersuing for what you say you will sue me for plus $1 extra. Second prong – the ‘booklet’ is defamatory I am suing the Party board people who promoted it and all the media who continue to host it. The booklet was ‘pulled’ in double quick time. Masterful! Cam successfully drove a wedge between Colin Craig and what is left of his party board. Meanwhile popcorn shares are on the rise.

As far as political aspirations go – I think he is dog tucker. His Parliamentary aspirations are in tatters and he is unlikely to be elected dog catcher in Auckland let alone mayor.

How this sort of legislation promotes “British values” is a mystery to me and Cameron is clearly oblivious to the irony.

Have a look at tonight’s News (and I use ONE as my example):

• Coverage of the trial you mention will, yep, contain a reference to the murder victim being involved with Millie Holmes…
• Any story involving workers will have Helen Kelly on camera – even though Helen and her pals represent a tiny portion of the overall workforce. (For the year ended March 2013 New Zealand had 138 unions with about 370,000 members representing 16.6% of the total employed workforce, according to Companies Office records.) Hell, Andy Bleeding Little is more popular than the Unions. Or relevant…
• Any story involving the police will have Police Association President Greg O’Connor giving us his spin…
• Any story involving the TPPA will have Professor Jane Kelsey, ‘a prominent critic of globalisation’ to quote Wikipedia, offering us her opinion…
• Any Friday ahead of a holiday weekend will see some reporter atop a motorway bridge telling us either that a) traffic is busy or b) will get busy real soon
• Any minor weather event – snow, gasp, in Winter, like – will see a cub reporter out in a blizzard to point out, again, that sheep look cute in snow and that kids love snowsledding if a day off school is thrown in…

And don’t get me STARTED on the ‘stories’ from overseas that only appear because some local cameraman happened to get ‘lucky’. ‘In Peru today, a duck crossed the road and WASN’T splatted by 74541425 passing cars’…

Then factor in the four or so ad breaks, the ‘previews’ and ‘reviews’ (‘Leading your News today’ or ‘Coming up in ‘your’ News), the promos for upcoming One programs (‘The award-winning ‘Sunday’ program…’), their enjoinder to ‘log into our website for up-to-date information’, the 2 or 3 minutes of idle chitchat between the presenters, the weatherpersons, the sports nutters and the ‘Seven Sharp’ crew … and you can EASILY see why they need an hour to tell us ‘our’ News…

Guardian Australia understands the Flinders University leadership has canvassed the opinion of staff at three schools – social and policy studies, international studies and environmental studies – and found a clear majority are opposed to hosting Lomborg’s “consensus” centre……

A Flinders University academic, who did not want to be named, said only four of around 100 staff across the three schools voiced unequivocal support for Lomborg’s centre.

“Leading a research centre is reserved for people with a very serious scholarly record, people who are at the top of their game,” the academic said. “[Lomborg] is someone who isn’t even in the game.

“Flinders said we should be brave and have these conversations, but we don’t need Lomborg next to us at the lunch table to have those conversations. You also have to be concerned with the government’s agenda in trying to shop around a centre with someone with so little credibility.”

Shawn Herles, any fiscal difficulty faced by the US Amed forces can be traced back the 3 trillion dollar 2003 war in Iraq payed for by reducing taxes and borrowing.

From your link the rhetoric actually does not show the ” army breaking down ” and merely demonstrating that the military like any other federal agency has budgetary and fiscal restraints. But of course Republicans and conservatives like you don;’t see it that way beleieving that it’s budget is limitless ,payed for out of cuts elsewhere ,and if need be simply borrowing.
