Polls for GOP candidate yes, but I think he’s going to hit the Obama effect ( pick up previous non voters ). Question is will he pick up more previous non voting supporters or opponents, given the US hispanic population I’d say it’s opponents.
He’s got offside with the full media spectrum from Murdoch/Kelly/Ailes through Univision/Ramos & it’s a juggernaught at the moment, but I am a little less sure he’ll be President than I was.

The Nats. would do better if they stopped pandering to the noisy and made some real decisions.
The noisy are like children, need to be seen and not heard.

and so that whole press conference went on with Trump debating more upon Ramos return.

Trump started out by saying, “Good to have you back.”

Ramos got really combative with Trump and called him out for “empty promises” in his immigration plan. Trump insisted that “great legal scholars” support him and said he would be deporting 11 million people in a “very humane fashion.”

Someone can be heard telling Ramos that they want to move on, but Trump kept going and asked questions of Ramos. He said there’s tremendous crime and bad gangs and the border and asked, “Do you mind if I send them back to Mexico?”

A few minutes later, Ramos continued to confront Trump, this time about his support among Hispanics. Trump answered by asking, “How much am I suing Univision for?”

Trump rejected the poll findings and bragged that 1) thousands of Hispanics work for him and 2) they love him.

and the clips right or wrong really do debate and discuss and asks good questions of Ramos too. Trump gives definitions and specifics. Very polite through out and firm.

It may take time but it usually helps a hardline candidate when they can point to a competitor and say or hint that they’re the extremist.

The Donald is doing Cruz’s work for him. A lot of this stuff is about hanging in there while others fall away. Aside from Fiorina the only other semi-weighty candidate from the first 2nd-tier debate was Perry, and he’s actually losing staff. The others from that debate are nowhere to be seen.

As far as the rest of the 1st-tier debate group is concerned they don’t necessarily have to worry about winning Iowa or New Hampshire: they just have to keep it close. In 1992 Bill Clinton came third in NH, but that beat expectations, showed he had fight (and knew how to fight), which began to pull in ground staff and donors. He was able to point to the others, even those who had beaten him, and ask the crucial question: do they look like winners to you?.

As far this kerfuffle is concerned it’s valuable in another way, in that it shows other GOP nominees that they don’t have to grovel to journalists and “apologise”. Jorge Ramos is not a journalist, he’s a white-hating racist at worst: at best he’s just another Hispanic activist and a Democratic-operative-with-a-byline. He deserved everything he got, which is why Trump will likely goose the polls again as DPF suggests.

After Donald Trump got Jorge Ramos kicked out of his press conference in Iowa, Ramos came back in the room and pressed Trump on his immigration position.

Trump started out by saying, “Good to have you back.”

This bit, and what follows it, from simpleton1’s quoted source is more complimentary of Trump I think than the clip above that simply shows a firm attitude to interruption, which seems of little interest to me.

It seems to me that Trump, who may not have been entirely serious about standing for election to start with, possibly simply indulging his own ego for personal branding purposes, is taking his popularity a bit more seriously – this last couple of weeks I’ve been getting the impression that there’s some more carefully calculated and cultivated expression coming from him.

I think he’s got himself some new specialist media advisers and/or he’s paying more attention to those he has. I wonder if success is breeding success by attracting Republican supporting talent to his campaign?

I love how Ramos is already playing the line about his rights to free speech being “trampled”. No asshole, you think you can talk over everybody else with statements-as-questions, you lose your right to speak – at least at that moment. If he wants to have that he should run for office himself.

Actually I liked one comment I saw, that this moment was a crystallisation of the illegal immigrant debate:

You play by the rules, that’s fine.
You want to jump the queue and not play by the rules?
Okay, you get kicked out, go to the back of the queue, and come back in later.

We’ll see if The Donald makes that point: he was not fast enough on his feet to do so in this debate.

Stroppy, no one other than you would think that Trump is anywhere near as great as Reagan was. 😎

Cruz is better than Reagan. Reagan was a semi-retired actor by trade. Cruz is a young, seasoned, international debater.

Wonder when he’ll be crashing Bernie Sander’s press conferences to ask for his views on unemployment vs cheap immigrants?

Especially since Bernie thinks it’s a Koch Brothers Plot!

Actually, Bernie can learn from this as much as GOP candidates, for the next occasion that #BlackLivesMatter tries to crash his party. Bernie would probably jump in the polls too, rather than coming off looking like another tired hack intimidated by PC.

Trump is just a Democrat trolling the GOP by lampooning its issues in the most offensive way he can. The only consistent thing about Trump is that he is a misogynist, and that has been the only criticism that got under his skin. The sad thing is that there appears to be a significant number of Americans who don’t get the joke.

I must put in this comment about Trump that I found a couple of weeks ago and pasted on to the tail end of another Trump thread, because it really is too good to ignore and applies to this incident and almost anything he’s doing so far:

For his part, Trump hasn’t merely knocked over the chessboard or set the rulebook on fire as Jazz postulated. That’s more like Ted Cruz level stuff. No Trump’s going the full Reservoir Dogs on our entire political process, dancing around as he cuts off its ear and pours gasoline on it while it begs him not to burn it alive.

Good for Trump. Another rude, hectoring reporter who thinks he is the only show in town.

After listening to Espiner rudely attacking and talking over Anne Tolley this morning and then patronisingly saying he knew it was challenging for her, I have had enough of reporters thinking they are the story.

As for ‘speaking truth to power’ – spare me. If all that means is a harangue, argumentativeness and rudeness who needs it.

I am also sick of hearing that someone ‘fronted up’ as if these radio and TV shows are courts of law or something important instead of an ephemeral medium falling mainly on deaf ears.

A tragedy those young reporters shot in the US but the self-promotion and arrogance of the media make them targets for crazies. Even the lesser-crazies like me often feel like wringing their necks.

Go The Don A breath of fresh air. Understands the real people rather than the usual pollie who panders to noisy minorities and ignores the silent majority who pay the taxes put their heads down and work hard and get pissed on.

Oh for a Don in NZ politics.

I watched the whole thing including when Ramos returned to the meeting and was allowed to question Trump and put his point of view. Trump was gentle and in control he wiped the floor with Ramos. I was impressed but I cannot support Trump, nor indeed any of the republicans, they all seem to me to be charlatans with Jeb Bush being the worse.

Trump has been serious from day one. His life story is quite something and he is a family man. He has never had a drink, smoked or taken drugs.

Those that think he is an attention seeker need to read his books. He was thinking about standing and concerned about the US issues in 2000. The Act party would not look out of place with Trump as leader.

He calls for tariffs, not to give the US an advantage, but only as a threat if he cannot get a level playing field of free market economics.

Trump says drop your tariffs and we will deal with you on the same level. Who would not want to keep dealing with the US? China would have to buckle.

What is wrong with using your size and power to “encourage” the removal of subsidies in other trading partners?

Hmmmm …

This has been an election full of magic. White Magic that only the black man from everywhere and nowhere could perform. Even his adored grandmother dying on the eve of the victory had a mythic feeling of completion to it in a candidacy full of signs and symbols. Remember the three-point basketball shot when he played with the soldiers in Kuwait? It’s as if Obama is the prince who lifts the curse in a fairy story, a curse that began eight years ago with an election wrenched away from the rightful winner and begetting as a consequence the wrathful visitation of tragedy and wars and hurricanes and economic collapse.

I had enough of this sort of worshipful, breathless, braindead shit in 2008: I don’t need it in 2016, FFS.

When you are in business you play by the rules of the game within the law. Imagine having him as PM in NZ. He would make John Key look like a complete amateur when it comes to reform. And he is.
