Way, way too old. I haven’t even been able to watch him as the Doctor (apart from the first two episodes of the new series where I tried to watch again). I still don’t like him as the Doctor.

The Department of Internal Affairs has rejected a request by the Jedi Society Incorporated to be recognised as a legitimate charitable endeavour, with all the tax-free benefits that entails.

This is outrageous. It is blatantly discriminatory and appears based on an assessment of the merits of the beliefs being advocated and whether the adherents truly believe them. A test that you can guarantee is not applied to Christians, or Jews or Muslims.

Not helping them? Are you just going to pretend that there aren’t thousands of pages of research and a medical community consensus that supervised gender transition is a valid treatment for people with gender dysphoria?

The humane response is to make decisions that are based on the available evidence. And the evidence clearly shows that helping people with gender dysphoria to transition is a legitimate and effective way of easing their suffering.

Trade Minister Tim Groser has refused to give details of New Zealand’s position in TPPA negotiations.ROBYN EDIE
Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) may have had to search 30,000 pages of documents to fulfil an Official Information Act request on Trans Pacific Partnership (TPPA) negotiations, Crown lawyers claim.

On Monday a group seeking a declaration that Trade Minister Tim Groser acted unlawfully when he issued a blanket refusal to release information on the TPPA negotiations took their claim to the High Court.

Dr Matthew Palmer QC, representing trade activist Professor Jane Kelsey and seven other applicants, claims the group is simply seeking a standard reading of the Official Information Act and that the group were not “wild eyed radicals” seeking a new interpretation of the law. The hearing is taking place in Wellington before Justice David Collins.

In January Kelsey sought from Groser a number of document on New Zealand’s negotiations in TPPA talks since 2013.

The agreement – a proposed Pacific rim trade pact – has not been completed.

While some draft texts and other documents have been leaked, the negotiations have largely been held in secret.

A number of protests have taken place throughout New Zealand demanding that the proposed text of the deal be made public.

Initially Groser’s office sought an extension of the time it had to respond to Kelsey’s request to allow consultation to be completed, but days later said that it was refusing to release any information.

The High Court challenge to Groser’s decision claims the Trade Minister made a judgement about what information the applicants wanted, without even reviewing all of the information request.

While much of the information may have needed to be kept confidential, some of which might have been useful to Kelsey and others without breaching the need for secrecy.

“Blanket refusal is unlawful and should be reconsidered,” Palmer said.

Appearing for the Crown, Deputy Solicitor-General Virginia Hardy said that the application by Kelsey and the other applicants were effectively inviting the court to second guess the judgement of both Groser, MFAT officials, and the Office of the Ombudsman, which had upheld Groser’s refusal.

The Chief Ombudsman upheld Groser’s decision to refuse the request, including on grounds under the Official Information Act which Groser did not cite in his refusal.

This was on the basis that releasing the information was justified to “avoid prejudice to the substantial economic interests of New Zealand”.

Hardy told the court that she had been advised that for officials at MFAT to search through information which may have been covered by Kelsey’s request, staff may have had to search through 30,000 documents.

This was in the context of Kelsey requesting the matter be treated with urgency.

“The Minister adopted a sensible approach” and focused on what was central to the request, Hardy said, making the judgement that there was nothing which could be released.

Collins asked Hardy if the minister could have simply written to Kelsey saying it would take months to fulfil the request and they may charge to have the work done, options granted under the provisions of the Official Information Act.

“Nothing would be added by a document by document assessment that that communication may have relayed,” Hardy said.

Monday’s hearing centres around the secrecy in which TPPA negotiations are being held, but focus of the Court covers the way the Government handles requests for information.

Palmer said that the Official Information Act represented a “sea change” in the way official information was treated when it was passed in 1982, replacing the Official Secrets Act, imposing for the first time a presumption that the information should be released unless there was good reason to withhold it.

“It is not good enough to withhold documents on a blanket basis which the minister assumes are relevant” to the act, Palmer said.

The applicants recognised that there was a need for a certain degree of confidentiality in trade negotiations.

“It is the extent of confidentiality that is being asserted by the Crown that is the problem,” Palmer said.

Palmer said that the documents were likely to contain information which the trade minister would likely consider to be anodyne – or run-of-the-mill – like the dates and locations of future meetings, but which others may consider to be important.

The opinion of the trade minister on how important the information is was not a reason for withholding information under the Official Information Act, Palmer said.

“The fact that a minister does not see value in the information cannot be a reason for withholding the information,” Palmer said.

“What is anodyne to one person, is valuable to another.”

The hearing would not spend much time on the applicant’s concerns about the impact of the TPPA, Palmer said, although he raised a particular concern about certification, where the United States could demand another country’s domestic law be modified to what the United States saw to be that country’s international obligations.

Kelsey’s challenge was joined by groups including Consumer NZ, who Palmer said was concerned that the TPPA could have “significant impact on New Zealand consumers”.

Other groups involved in the challenge include Oxfam and Greenpeace.

I’m not sure what difference it makes whether or not he “made” or “invented” a clock. There is no evidence of any sort of “PR Scam”. That is speculation not supported by anything in the video you have referenced (other than the author’s own similar speculation).

Because the response was based on prejudice. The fact that people like yourself continue to claim some sort of conspiracy, despite having no evidence, is evidence of that. Even if it was purposefully planned it still wouldn’t change the fact that the response has been based on prejudice. It’s like profiling a black person for drugs, finding drugs and then trying to tell yourself you weren’t initially motivated by prejudice.

More importantly, there is a real discussion that you could be having that isn’t based in conspiracy theory nonsense. This boy has taken a picture of himself with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu. According to AsiaNews Davutoğlu has reformed the education system to require all students to study the Koran. Perhaps a relevant question to put to Davutoğlu is whether it is also discriminatory against minorities to have a national religion and to impose it on everyone regardless of their beliefs. And given that it obviously is discriminatory, why would he pose with Ahmed to oppose discrimination?

More details are emerging of the Dotcom/Megaupload Ponzi scheme:

One Megaupload user was allegedly paid more than US$50,000 by Kim Dotcom for creating thousands of links to illegal videos on the website, a court has heard.

The extradition hearing before Auckland District Court began last week after nine previous hearings were abandoned amidst three and a half years of legal wrangling.

The FBI laid charges in January 2012 when the internet entrepreneur and three others – Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk and Finn Batato – were indicted on 13 charges including copyright infringement, racketeering, money laundering and fraud.

It is alleged the men all worked on the Megaupload site, in various capacities, on which there was a slew of copyright-infringing material posted and shared by its users.

Christine Gordon, QC – on behalf of the US government – said they allegedly paid the most prolific users who attracted huge volumes of traffic to the site, knowing the content breached copyright laws.

She said 77 per cent of the website members had been subject to at least one take-down notice by copyright holders, while 56 per cent had attracted 10 or more.

Rather than censuring these users, it is alleged Dotcom and his co-defendants protected them and lavished them with cash rewards and online privileges.

Ms Gordon detailed the “biography” of a user referred to only as “TH”, who received more than $50,000 in reward payments between 2006 and 2011.

The user amassed 1200 take-down requests – all of which were allegedly processed by van der Kolk – and those links generated 1.2 million downloads.

Ms Gordon said no steps were taken to restrict his offending and instead the defendants increased his server space to 2.5 terabytes to accommodate his 30,000 files.

However, he sent threatening emails to the website when he believed he was not being paid sufficiently for his “work”.

Ms Gordon read Dotcom’s alleged email response: “You and your friends are at most one per cent of our traffic so please don’t overestimate your importance to us. We’re thankful of your support of Megaupload in the past and I think we have been fair to you.”

I wonder how many people bought subscriptions to Megaupload to view the 30,000 files uploaded by TH before he and Dotcom fell out. I’m sure it would have been way more than $50,000 worth.

1200 take-down requests from just one uploader, which generated 1.2 MILLION downloads. This seems to have been a serious money-making business that Dotcom and his co-accused have been engaged in.

Professional counselling for those trying to combat their homosexual feelings or tendencies has been made illegal in many places. It’s like they don’t have a choice – they must fall in line wth the liberal narrative.

It is telling that Johns Hopkins University won’t perform gender reassignment surgeries anymore.

In a June 12 Wall Street Journal op-ed, Dr. Paul McHugh wrote that “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered” by not treating transgender “confusions … as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

According to McHugh, the “sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects.” The first, he says, is that “it does not correspond with physical reality.” The second, more importantly, is that not treating transgender disorder properly “can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”

In his op-ed, McHugh cited a 2011 study that followed “324 sex-reassigned persons” from 1973 to 2003 in Sweden. According to the study’s abstract, it found that “persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population.”

“Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group,” the authors wrote.

The study, McHugh wrote in his op-ed, found that “beginning about 10 years after having the surgery, the transgendered began to experience increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population.”

McHugh says that Johns Hopkins “launched a study in the 1970s comparing the outcomes of transgendered people who had the surgery with the outcomes of those who did not.”

“Most of the surgically treated patients described themselves as ‘satisfied’ by the results, but their subsequent psycho-social adjustments were no better than those who didn’t have the surgery,” he explained.

Thus, says McHugh, “we stopped doing sex-reassignment surgery, since producing a ‘satisfied’ but still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs.”

The video you linked to simply demonstrates that the clock is a commercial alarm clock that he has taken out of the casing and put inside a pencil case. It does not demonstrate that the kid had any intent to pass it off as a hoax bomb. In fact all reports are that the kid always explained that it was a clock and that it wasn’t a bomb. You can’t be guilty of making a hoax bomb if you: 1. Don’t have a bomb and 2. Try to convince everyone that your non-bomb is not a bomb.

Further, the video does not demonstrate in any way that there was some plot to make this a PR exercise. Aside from that being the most absurd conspiracy nonsense, even if it was planned that wouldn’t invalidate a finding of prejudice or discrimination. That’s like saying every tradesman caught out on the show “Target” is innocent because the TV show deliberately set out to catch such people.

As far as I’ve read there was never a bomb scare. The authorities never treated it as if there was a bomb. It appears it was treated from the outset as a hoax bomb despite it obviously not being a bomb, and the kid stating that it was not a bomb.

I bet the single track you bought “Ill Communication’ (Beastie Boys) for was “Sabotage”. Awesome song (one of my favourites) but the whole album is pretty essential in my opinion.
The B-side to “Root down” (another awesome song off Ill Communication) is a song called “Mullet head” which is hardcore punk. The band crossed multiple genres. Give it another go, you won’t regret it.

This wasn’t tinkering. Pulling the case off a commercial clock and passing it off as your own isn’t “tinkering”.

The video I posted to at 3.06 demonstrates this wasn’t tinkering. The MSM immediately hailed the kid as a young genius. It was absolutely conned.

A pile of wires with an electronic clock face ticking down would make any prudent person think, even if fleetingly, ‘What is this? A timer. Could this be some sort of explosive device?’

You have to worry about the direction our society is headed where we accede to the wishes of those living in a fantasy, feeling guilted into playing along with them in order not to hurt their feelings or to be out of lock-step with the consensus.

Frankly Fletch what I worry about is all the idiots out there who think that this is not by design but simply a mere accident, and that there is no motive whatsoever behind show after show after show year after year after year, that slowly slowly slice the elephant bring morons a step closer a step closer a step closer to this precise behaviour.

He used paranoia about security at his new school to make a name for himself/establish his badass reputation.
He used the cry of discrimination to ensure either favourable treatment in future or to demonstrate evidence of discrimination.

SPC: a 14 year old does not know enough about the operations of the world, politics and media to be able to plan/predict outcomes for a deliberate media event like Ahmed clock created. He couldn’t know that school would overreact, police behave stupidly, or that it would get so much media traction. Even very politically savvy adults would struggle to plan or manipulate outcomes to these ends.

Never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.

Reid, there is division in society between those who want all to feel included (secular development) and those who have an order of rule expectation for inclusion (largely based on a god’s religious order for man).

Now that the regime has moved from a religious one to a secular one, it is not surprising that some of the old order do not like this and there will be extreme cases that will give us pause – but earlier there was the burning of people on crosses and the incarceration of lesbians in psychiatric institutions (and gay men in prison).

Maori activists storm Auckland office, force employees out

A group of Maori activists stormed the office of the owners of Auckland’s City Works Depot, dragging staff out and barricading themselves inside, according to witnesses.

A bartender at a nearby bar said a woman who works inside the City Works Depot building hurried into to the bar on Monday afternoon, saying she felt intimidated by an altercation.

“There were a few dudes from some organisation saying the land had been taken wrongfully,” he said.

“I ran to see what was going on. They physically removed staff from the Tournament Office so they could go in there.

Senior Sergeant Rees of Auckland Central police said police were working to resolve the problem.

This was on the basis that releasing the information was justified to “avoid prejudice to the substantial economic interests of New Zealand”.

So for the Chief Ombudsman money trumps law.

Sorry, Ugly, that is just a quote from the Official Information Act, not the opinion of the Chief Ombudsman.

It’s what is termed an ‘other reason’ for withholding information, which means the agency concerned needs to consider whether there are any other interest which make it desirable, in the public interest, to release the information.

Brown supremacists raid a building and assault occupants, police “work to resolve a problem”. If it were white supremacists, I doubt it’d be put in those watered down terms.

This will show you the length to which people go to, to find a perceived offense in anything. A black studies student saw a bit of string hanging from a tree and assumed it was some kind of “message” or warning regarding black people and lynchings. So she got all uptight about it, informed the school president and the campus cops about this “hate crime”. And you know what it was?

By the time the sun came up, media throughout the state was buzzing with speculation about the white racists harassing black students on campus.

The acting president called for a rally to condemn the atrocity.

Then students started to wake up. And many knew the rope was not a rope, but a string. And the noose was not a noose.

And the act was not a hate crime. Or even a fake hate crime.

It was just string that held up a paper lantern — left over from an alumni party in June.

But none of that mattered. The anti-string, anti-hate crime rally went on, as scheduled.

The president did not apologize for perpetrating the hate crime hoax. Instead, she threw the university police under the bus for not figuring it out, then condemned the hate crime which had not happened, if it had happened, which it had not.

Since some of us are digging out what is under B in music collections and its quiet at work, this what I’ve found aggregated across the SSD in my laptop, my smartphone, Dropbox, external drives and whatever other devices I have lying around
Bay City Rollers, Beach Boys, Beatles, Billy Jo Spears, Black Crowes. Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Blondie, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Brendan Dugan, Boz Scaggs, Buck Owens (should be under D, S and O respectively?) I also have a folder on one of the drives labelled Black Eyed Peas but its empty for some reason so dont know what it is/was. I think the NAS at home has Garth Brooks on it along with most of the above. Rap is a 404 not found for me

The Crown Law Office faced questions in the High Court at Wellington from a judge keen to understand why Trade Minister Tim Groser dismissed an Official Information Act request for the confidential texts of Trans Pacific Partnership trade and investment pact negotiations, without closely investigating the documents.

Justice David Collins quizzed deputy solicitor-general Virginia Hardy, appearing for Groser in a claim for a declaratory judgment on the reach of the OIA led by TPP opponent and University of Auckland law professor Jane Kelsey, and a coalition of seven non-government organisations, iwi and consumer advocates.

Counsel for Kelsey, Matthew Palmer, QC, argued in yesterday morning’s hearings that it was “dangerous” to allow a “sweeping international agreement” to negotiate the TPP confidentially to over-ride the provisions of the OIA.

While a lot won’t agree this court case could have lots of ramifications. Essentially its about the use of other countries rules to over ride our own. That’s of course an issue of sovereignty.

Its also about saying to the Govt. and its organizations that the OIA is not to be abused as it often is now.

Dare I say it it also supports Penny’s case about transparency.

Hopefully Collins will see the need for transparency whilst also recognizing that sometimes some information needs to be kept close.

It’s rather ironical that we as Kiwi’s can’t know this stuff but the Americans, courtesy of five eyes and Internet monitoring and our naivety, will know it all all the time if they want.

Seems we need some better balance to that situation and we should remember that other Trading partners like China may well feel aggrieved that America can do this.

No it is not. That is over dramatised claptrap.

Every time you sign a contract (e.g. the sale of your house), you create rights in favour of another party in respect of your own property. You do that every day. It is nothing calamitous. What is more, it is entirely involuntary. You do so because you see some advantage in making a commitment to another party.

If you sign a contract with another country, setting out the rules within which corporations may trade with each other internationally, then you are giving away something and you are taking something back.

Some people, unfortunately, take the view that “taking” is the be all and end all of contract law and that “giving” does not enter the equation.
I would like to talk more about this but I have a commitment out of town and I am late.
