Russia accused of clandestine funding of European parties as US conducts major review of Vladimir Putin’s strategy

The US intelligence review will examine whether Russian security services are funding parties and charities with the intent of “undermining political cohesion”, fostering agitation against the Nato missile defence programme and undermining attempts to find alternatives to Russian energy.

Officials declined to say which parties could come into the probe but it is thought likely to include far-right groups including Jobbik in Hungary, Golden Dawn in Greece, the Northern League in Italy and France’s Front National which received a 9m euro (£6.9m) loan from a Russian bank in 2014.

Other cases of possible Moscow-backed destabilisation being monitored by diplomats includes extensive links in Austria, including a visit by Austrian MPs to Crimea to endorse its annexation, as well as cases of Russian spies discovered using Austrian papers.

Russian influence has also been detected in a referendum in the Netherlands next April over whether to block the EU’s closer relations with Ukraine. Sources said arguments deployed in support of the referendum “closely resembled” known Russian propaganda.

Russian desire to influence politics in Britain is also in the ascendant, sources said, as the Kremlin eyes the forthcoming EU referendum and the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader as potential opportunities to weaken Europe.

Well the British and European Muslims were also “just doing fine” until about 2005 or so. Then what happened?

I suspect there are a few things going on:

1) A global rise in Muslim fundamentalism. Muslims who were previously prepared to live a more Western way have gone back to being more Muslim. To an extent that has even happened in the Middle East too. Consider that the Iraq of the 1950s… 1980s was pretty much western.

2) Once populations hit a certain tipping point (maybe somewhere in the 5-10% region), it is much easier to form an identity leading to Muslims in, say, France identifying as Muslims rather than as French (even if they were born in France).

3) The 2015 “refugee” invasion has emboldened the previously passive Muslims (particularly younger men) to the point they believe the west, law and order and all that are weak and can be overrun.

Only (1) applies in NZ. Due to the distances (3) won’t apply here.

Will we see real demands for Sharea Law in NZ – beyond the odd nutter spouting off? I doubt it.

Their hand-wringing has led them to believe that importing a culture characterised by:

– massive anti-semitism with all the religion united in wishing for the genocide of the Jews.

If you wrote it as a script for a fantasy movie – nobody would buy it because it was too unbelievable.

Russia is breaching all the norms of war by deliberately targeting rescue workers, schools and hospitals in Syria, the UK foreign secretary has claimed, accusing the Russians of running return raids on targets inside Syria solely to hit civilian rescue workers. […] “The Russians are deliberately attacking civilians, and the evidence points to them deliberately attacking schools and hospitals and deliberately targeting rescue workers.

“If you go back for a second strike you know what you are doing.”

Hammond was told by the teams of civilian rescue workers in Adana that Russian bombing missions were distinct from those run by the Syrian air force since they attacked with multiple aircraft and always returned to targets 15 to 20 minutes after the initial bomb to hit the same target.

Hammond reported: “Rescue workers are no longer marking their vehicles because they believe they are being targeted deliberately. They also told me hospitals around Aleppo and Idlib have had Red Cross symbols removed because they are becoming a target for the Russians.”

Taken aback by what he was told by the group of rescue workers, trainees known as the white helmets, he continued: “We in Britain have been rightly challenged about Saudi Arabia in Yemen and why we maintain our confidence in the Saudis not breaching international law. But the much bigger story here is Russia. They are supposedly our ally sitting at the same table in the negotiations on Syria’s future, but they are targeting civilians – they should be held to account under international law.”

Hammond predicted he would get “nothing but flannel” from the Russians in response to his allegations, but said details of the attacks were being compiled, and warned if Moscow did not change its tactics it would be impossible to make any progress in peace talks in Geneva. Critical to those peace talks was a ceasefire and confidence-building measures, he said.

Easy enough to claim, particularly from your relatively narrow perspective. But you provide no support for your condemnation, no analysis of Zeman’s views or statements. You’re not alone in that, including on this site, but usually in the West we expect a little more analysis and debate before accepting such strident views about a national leader.

Note this except from the article about Zeman himself:

“Zeman, a 71-year-old leftwinger and the first-ever directly elected president of the Czech Republic, has repeatedly spoken out against the surge of migrant and refugee arrivals in Europe.”

Leftwingers are less prolific critics of high levels of Muslim immigration, and Zeman himself is the democratically-elected leader of an important country at the cutting edge of tensions between Europe and the Middle East. His views deserve rather closer examination that dismissive slogans.

So – not baseless. In fact, it’s already in existence. I was dropping off an item to a friend last night when a courier van passed me, and the car in front (we were both doing 50), on our left after two lanes had merged into one doing about 80 in a 50 zone. I thought the van might tip over as it violently swerved to the right to avoid the parked cars, cutting off the car in front of me, then ran the next red light.

Where to start with this one? Shall we take the “Godless” bit first?

I’m not famililar enough with Atheism in continental Europe, but I doubt being publicly so would prevent you being elected across most of it. Contrast that with the US where it would probably do more harm to your electoral prospects than being gay. In the UK, it’s the complete reverse of the US, Tony Blair kept his god-bothering very quiet because he knew it would actively harm his popularity. Most of Brits probably view the Archbishop of Canterbury as a bit worryingly religious 😀 .

Occupied? Well yes, but mainly by Hollywood and nobody apart from that committee setup to defend the French language seems to be particularly unhappy about it.

Why didn’t they flee before the “Arab Spring” then? They had ten years to flee the current Assad regime. He came to power in 2000 , I don’t recall a refugee crisis then. They are fleeing the war that the rebels, assisted by the west and evil Sunni regimes such as Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia started in Syria.

… Having to adjust to Treaty of Waitangi obligations in legislation and policy and a growing Maori population, including through intermarriage, has built a cultural capability base. The question is how to leverage off that and to use migrants as bridges to make cultural capability a success factor for business, government and New Zealand. Answering that question, and how to build cultural intelligence and measure its success will be the subject of the Superdiversity Centre for Law, Policy and Business’ next publication in November 2016. It will also be the focus of the Culturally Competent Leaders video series starting this week in the Herald online and the “What next after the Superdiversity Stocktake?” Conference supported by AUT University and Auckland Council. The Superdiversity Centre has already built a survey tool for the Committee for Auckland to allow organisations to measure their cultural capability, and created first time cultural capability modules for Southern Institute of Technology to train their staff to succeed with international students, and for the International Travel College to train tourism operators. The Superdiversity Centre is also working on the legal and policy framework needed to consider the implications of superdiversity.

New Zealand can become world beaters not just in rugby but also in our cultural capability to maximise the economic and social benefits of being one of the most ethnically superdiverse countries in the OECD. When an open attitude is combined with accumulated experience and knowledge about other cultures, you are heading towards cultural intelligence, which is a journey rather than a goal.

Why Larry Summers is Wrong and Bernie Sanders is Right on Glass Steagall

Since Clinton and her operatives have become aggressive in trying to discredit Bernie Sanders on issues where he both has a better track record and better proposals, it’s time for a wee reality check, in this case, on Sanders’ financial reform package.

There’s a lot to like, for instance his insistence that executives be prosecuted for serious misconduct and his backing of a Post Office Bank.

There are also some things that need to be reworked, like his usury ceiling proposal.

Classical economists like Adam Smith were keen supporters of usury ceilings because they could see the consequences of letting lenders charge whatever interest rate they could get.

Creditors targeted wealthy gamblers first and foremost, and the rates they were willing to pay was punitively high compared to what productive enterprises could support.

Thus Smith and his colleagues saw usury limits as key to forcing lenders to find the best targets at a reasonable rate of interest, rather than search out the most reckless, who tended also not to be socially beneficial users of funds either.

The failing with the Sanders proposal is that he sets as fixed limit of 15.9%; it should be set in relationship to prevailing interest rates, as well as the length of the loan.

Larry Summers, acting as a proxy for Team Clinton, took a swipe at the Sanders’ views in a Washington Post op-ed at year end.

Admittedly this was a case of dueling op-eds; Summers was responding to a Sanders article in the New York Times which outlined his reform priorities.

However, one of Summers arguments, and one that Clinton has taken up now that Sanders has set forth his plan in more detail, is that Sanders’ “Glass Steagall” reform idea is all wet.

Clinton has brazenly mischaracterized Sanders’ proposal.

She makes it sound as if it is a straight-up revival of the 1933 law, and asserts that it misses “shadow banking” and her reform proposals are much better on that front.

We’ll discuss this issue in greater detail in a later post.

The short version is that Sanders did not propose restoring the original Glass Steagall.

He intends to implement the bill devised by former FDIC chairman Tom Hoenig and Elizabeth Warren which is informally described as the 21st century Glass Steagall Act.

And yes, sports fans, it includes provisions to curb shadow banking.

Summers made the same mischaracterization, but took another angle of attack:

Glass Steagall had nothing to do with the crisis, ergo restoring it wouldn’t stop future crises.

Andrei, I don’t think your present a very fair outcome of WW2 and it’s consequences . The Soviet narrative was the it was one by the ever sacrificing Red Army in the Great Patriotic War with little pr no account of the Allied contribution .The facts and Truth is that all of the Allies ( including the Soviets ) made their vital and significant contributions to ending the Nazi regime.

However I do think Russia needs to be a bit more forthcoming on this acknowledging the Wests contribution e.g via the Arctic convoys providing much needed food and military supplies giving the Red Army and Soviet citizens ” oxygen ” to say alive. Something I recently leant t that the T34 tank did not become fully effective until the supply of US supplied Radio Telephone and other communications equipment .

Initially the people of East Germany were better off than those of the West after WW2 – the Western powers sought to crush Germany and reduce it to an agricultural economy only.

When they realized the Communists were gaining because of this policy they changed it in 1947

Berlin was ground zero in this ideological conflict for forty years as we know but this is ancient history now – West Germany prospered as a result

But there are still over 40,000 US troops in Germany – can you tell me why?

What would happen if the German people elected a Government that asked them to leave? I can guarantee you that Government would not last long and that it would almost certainly be a violent end

The political Government may have done, but they do not count in Iran.
There is only on man who counts, and HE can get rid of the Government whenever he wants.
As expected Obama etc have been well conned, but will not realise this, after he has gone, that it is all a con to get the billions released, and to export oil.
Caveat Emptor – you are dealing with Iran, who are known professional cheats, who will continue to hide whatever Nuclear materials they want from anybody trying to find it.

6 More Reasons Larry Summers Should Not Be Fed Chair

There are a number of reasons the former director of Obama’s National Economic Council shouldn’t be nominated to head the Federal Reserve. But he would be particularly bad on financial reform.

There is a broad consensus among liberal economists that President Barack Obama should most definitely not nominate Larry Summers as the new chairman of the Federal Reserve. Summers, the former Treasury Secretary under President Clinton and the former director of Obama’s National Economic Council, lacks the central banking experience that the other top contender for the position boasts: Janet Yellen, the Fed’s current vice chair, has worked at the Fed for nearly 20 years. The little Summers has said about monetary policy suggests that he may cut back on the stimulus measures that the Fed has deployed since the financial crisis, even though the economy is still struggling. (Oh yeah, and he has implied that women may be “innate[ly]” intellectually inferior.)

But Summers has other troubling attributes. In addition to setting monetary policy, the Fed has important duties as a financial industry watchdog, and financial reform advocates say that Summers’ blatantly pro-Wall Street record would doom current efforts by regulators and Congress to reign in the industry.

Here are six reasons why a Larry Summers Fed chair would be dangerous for financial reform:

1. Summers blocked pre-crash regulation of Wall Street: In the 1990s, Brooksley Born, the former chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) under Clinton, noticed that the complex, opaque, and as-yet unregulated derivatives market was rapidly expanding, so she proposed bringing the multi-trillion dollar market under CFTC rules. (Derivatives are financial products whose value is derived from underlying numbers like interest rates or fuel prices.) Summers, who was then Deputy Treasury Secretary, didn’t like that idea. He testified during a 1998 Senate hearing that derivatives regulation wasn’t necessary because Wall Street could be trusted to police itself. His fierce resistance, along with that of then-Fed Chair Alan Greenspan and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, foiled Born’s plans. As New York Times reporter Timothy O’Brien said at the time, “They…shut her up and shut her down.” Partly because of this lack of derivatives oversight, few people saw the 2007 derivatives market meltdown coming.

2. He pushed to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act: In 1999, Summers also played an important role in convincing Congress to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, which had for decades forced banks to keep their commercial and investment activities separate. The idea behind Glass-Steagall was that banks that hold customer deposits should not be making wild bets with that money. Repeal of the law allowed commercial banks to get into the mortgage-backed securities market that came crashing down during the financial crisis. “Larry Summers helped give us the last crash,” says Bart Naylor, a financial policy advocate at the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen. “He must not be allowed to operate the heavy equipment of the Fed.”

3. The crisis didn’t teach Summers many lessons: In 2009 and 2010, as Congress was drafting up the sprawling Dodd-Frank financial reform law aimed at preventing another financial collapse, Summers was the “most vocal internal opponent” of the Volcker Rule, which forbids banks from making risky bets with taxpayer money, Noam Scheiber recently wrote at The New Republic. At the time, Summers said it would be impossible to draw a clear line between the trading banks did for themselves and the trading they did for clients, a claim financial reformers dispute. Three years after Dodd-Frank passed, the Volcker rule has yet to be finalized because Wall Street is waging an all-out war against the law. A Fed chair who sides with the financial industry on the rule would not help matters.

4. Larry likes big banks: Summers was also hostile to a proposed addition to the Dodd-Frank law that then-Sen. Ted Kaufman of Delaware introduced, which would have broken up mega-banks into smaller banks. Summers objected to the measure because, he said, it would mean smaller banks “would be at greater risk of failing” if they had taken on too much risk, according to The Payoff: Why Wall Street Always Wins, by Jeff Connaughton. I.e. the institutions would fail if they make bad decisions—something that is supposed to happen in capitalism.

5. No, he really likes big banks: As the Wall Street Journal reported last week, Summers is a paid consultant for Citigroup, and does similar work for Nasdaq, the hedge fund D.E. Shaw, the venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, and Alliance Partners, an asset-management firm. “Optics mean a great deal,” Arthur Wilmarth, a George Washington University law professor told the Journal. “It would certainly be desirable for the Fed chair to be above any possible suspicion that he or she would favor any particular economic or financial interest.”

6. Summers lost Harvard close to $2 billion on bad investments: Summers’ disregard for reigning in risk in the financial sector is mirrored in the way he has handled investments he personally managed. While he was president at Harvard University between 2001 and 2006, Summers invested billions of dollars of the school’s money in a risky mix of stocks, bonds, hedge funds, and private equity. As a result, when the financial crisis hit, the university ended up losing 27 percent—or $1.8 billion—of its $6 billion in cash assets.

Despite his risk-happy ways and deregulatory glee, even Wall Street would rather have Yellen as Fed chair than Summers, according to a recent CNBC poll. Why? Because Yellen favors looser monetary policy—meaning lower interest rates—than Summers. And Wall Street loves itself some easy money.

An absolute fabrication . When did the US , Britain and France occupy and crush the Eastern Zone ( Soviet occupied that came the GDR ) ?

Why did West Berlin like West Germany eventually prospered and East Germany did almost the opposite ? Why the need to build the Berlin wall ? Stop West Germans escaping to the East ?

I shall not be apologising to John Banks for anything, and, in my considered opinion, believe that both he and Don Brash, as former fellow Directors of Huljich Wealth Management (NZ) Ltd, should have been equally charged for signing Registered Prospectuses which contained misleading information.

Correct. There is no legally binding deal with Iran, and Iran did not sign it.

President Obama didn’t require Iranian leaders to sign the nuclear deal that his team negotiated with the regime, and the deal is not “legally binding,” his administration acknowledged in a letter to Representative Mike Pompeo (R., Kan.) obtained by National Review. “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is not a treaty or an executive agreement, and is not a signed document,” wrote Julia Frifield, the State Department assistant secretary for legislative affairs, in the November 19 letter.

Frifield wrote the letter in response to a letter Pompeo sent Secretary of State John Kerry, in which he observed that the deal the president had submitted to Congress was unsigned and wondered if the administration had given lawmakers the final agreement. Frifield’s response emphasizes that Congress did receive the final version of the deal. But by characterizing the JCPOA as a set of “political commitments” rather than a more formal agreement, it is sure to heighten congressional concerns that Iran might violate the deal’s terms.

“The success of the JCPOA will depend not on whether it is legally binding or signed, but rather on the extensive verification measures we have put in place, as well as Iran’s understanding that we have the capacity to re-impose — and ramp up — our sanctions if Iran does not meet its commitments,” Frifield wrote to Pompeo.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani discouraged his nation’s parliament from voting on the nuclear deal in order to avoid placing legal burdens on the regime. “If the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is sent to [and passed by] parliament, it will create an obligation for the government. It will mean the president, who has not signed it so far, will have to sign it,” Rouhani said in August. “Why should we place an unnecessary legal restriction on the Iranian people?”
